Just a heads up for those who own cages as well as bikes and, like me, have tasted the bitter earth of the roadside...
Had a conversation with my car insurer this morning on an unrelated matter, the end result of which is that they don't count motorcycle claims in their policy pricing. I'm faxing them a copy of some documentation showing the vehicle model during the claim and they're going to be giving me a refund of the extra amount the policy cost had I not put the claim on the record* Great success ![]() *They're also confirming in writing that they're aware of the claim and that it doesn't affect the policy, to cover my back should I need to make a car claim in the future...

Which insurer?! How come they charged you for it originally?

Admiral is my current broker, although the AA also said they wouldn't take M/C claims into account
They charged me originally because I was under the impression that they take into account all claims you had, and there was no option when taking out the quote to say what type of vehicle you were driving at the time of the incident, or what vehicle the policy you claimed on covered ![]()

Admiral said it's because they don't offer bike insurance, so sounds like it's a case of whether your car insurer can cover bikes, rather than any benevolence...

I’m with Admiral as well. Only started driving a cage this year. When I used the net for quotes I always put down about the time I wrote a Corsa off with my leg, but when I called up to take the quote the guy on the phone told me it needn’t count so took it off, not sure if it saved me money though.
However a week or so after I get a letter from them saying there is a discrepancy between my quotes and policy and I may have to pay extra and such. So I called them up relayed the story and initially got told that as it was an accident on the bike it would count against me. I said fine, if that counts then my 10 years no claims discount will need to be applied to my policy as that is on a bike as well. The chap had to talk to his supervisor before letting me know that they weren’t going to do anything and my policy stands. The trouble is every insurer treats no claims on cars and bikes differently which really angers me. There are some out there that will just use the fact you claimed against you, but others will let you use your car no claims against your bike. However I’m yet to find one that will let me use my bike no claims against my car and so I have to pay far too much for insurance yet again. |
