I've been known to get through a litre or so of oil in 3 weeks, so I can imagine you could get through enough to cause damage.
Sucks that she's hurt, but I'm sure you can pull her through in some form or another.

The oil light is pressure and has nothing to do with level. I've got a '99 and am told its the same engine for later models (minor changes). Unless you check the level weekly you'll never know until to late.

In my experiance its sounds more like a chain saw then clucking. And I've not really lost power. (Yes I've done this 3 times ) Out of interest is the noise limited to one cylinder?

Worse case expect £600 - 700 to get a new engine and fitted

If the oil is getting too low the oil pressure light may blink and bit before coming on permanently, just as the major damage is being done.

My SV goes from max to min in about 1500miles, the engine isnt worn and it doesnt noticeabley burn any.
I try and ride the bike to its max everytime i go out so it will use some oil. Belting along the motorway will use some too. Manufacturers do have wide tolerances on oil useage and they will always show you the manual which probably says check it every ride.

Sounds like getting an engine from a breaker will be your best option if the worst has happened. Should be too hard to fit either if you were going to do it yourself.

Is that the last time the oil was changed, if so it was well overdue.

Correct, but it's very much a worst case warning, the oil pressure switch operates at a very low value - when the oil is hot and therefore thin and the bikes idling there is likely no more than 10-15psi oil pressure, and the switch must operate comfortably below that figure, or false warnings will be given - all the oil light does is indicate that there either is or isn't any sort of pressure at all. When you're riding the oil light can be off when the pressure is way less than adequate.

Don't rely on it. Check the oil level.

Hi all,

I'm still a bit shell shocked really folks, I got home to Mrs Mass and bless her, she told me "I'm not getting another one" & "You've just thrown 6k down the road", and I guess in some respect she's right.

I've managed to get a trailer to take her to George Whites in slough. I have rang them this morning to tell them what happened. They would like to see the bike just to make sure.
The bike does start, but just sounds awful, I've come to the conclusion that it WILL be my fault, and a new engine jobby.
Nagai has offered to fit a enw one already "cheers Mart"

Just gutted
