if you wait till january its usually cheaper as a lot of dealers half their hourly rate. an added bonus is that the bike will cool down a lot quicker outside so your bike is with them for less time.

I don't think it quite works like that, they don't usually check the engine with a thermometer before checking the clearances. An overnight stay before starting the service is the usual way of making sure it's sufficiantly cool.

a bike does not have to be stone cold to check the valve clearances, it just has to be cold enough. colder weather will cool the bike down quicker so you don't have to leave the bike with them overnight.

i think you have misread my statement. what i was saying is in january the hourly workshop rates of the dealers usually go down. because of the cold ambient temperatures you don't have to give them the bike overnight.

Why is that?
To measure the gaps properly?

define stone cold...

stone cold in Australia is completely different to the UK due to higher ambient temperatures. same goes for summer verses winter in the UK. all you are looking for is a temperature cold enough to make sure that you don't warp any parts that you remove so as long as the parts stay a uniform temp while you are dong the work things should be ok. i'm not saying that you should do the work on a hot bike or even a warm bike but cold enough to ensure that the parts wont have a huge difference in temperature when you remove/assemble.

same goes for the gap spec of the shims. a bike adjusted in the hight of summer might be out of spec in the deepest of winter but i very much doubt it. when it comes to valve gaps then i'm afraid near enough is good enough as long as its not to tight or loose.

its all relitive. basically you need it cold so that you can get an accurate measurement of your clearances. they give you a tolerance and it relects on it in relation to the rest of the mating components (i.e. respectivly everyhting will be at an increased ambient temp in oz as opposed to here) it MUST be cold to get an accurate measurement so you dont have residule heat in the head for example giving you an increased gap that then closes up when its cold
