I think the idea behind swopping the carbs over is to see if the misfire also then moves over thus establishing if it is a carb issue, or elsewhere. As I recall the carbs also have a small window in the side of the slide housing so you can see the dot on the slide to set the throttles, if you put the carbs the wrong way round you won't be able to see the windows.....

Its not a misfire. It is difficulty starting that is resolved by covering the intake of the carb which is appearing to reduce the amount of air getting in that is making me think it is an air leak somewhere. So I'm thinking of taking the reed blocks off and instant gasketing them back on.

As for swapping them I can only do them left to right, not back to front as the intake and exit holes of the carbs are different sizes so wont fit the wrong way round. Plus there is also the throttle balance window that I wouldn't be able to see, so I'm sure they are attached to the correct side of the bike.

Sorry mate, I'm not suggesting you had fitted them the wrong way round (as in left to right, surely nobody could be daft enough to try and fit them back to front...), rather I was suggesting you could temporarily try swopping left to right to see if the problem follows the carb. The way I read the posts I thought it was only starting on one cylinder, but if not then ignore my suggestion.

There is one vacuum pipe that feeds from the left hand carb to the fuel tap.

However at the moment it is blanked off with a clean bolt as I'm running from the remote tank.

That's no problem. You'll be surprised what I've seen on bikes over the years... All suggestions are helpful and will be considered. I just want to get this finished now!

Could be passing the bolt

True. I can plug the tap in and see what happens. Not sure if it will need the rest of the tank assembly and fuel to work though?

How long has it run after you hand choke it into starting? Do the plugs look lean? Maybe just oily.
I suspect either the choke isn't working or it's too lean, even with the choke on. I've had experience with several machines that needed the hand choke method to start- one had a choke that wasn't working, the other didn't have a choke.
