It'll be something small and silly that's caused the issue

Saying check fuel/air/spark does not fulfill the brief at the start of the thread!

DaddyJob is giving specific tests achievable within the constraints of the challenge in a logical order

After 5 pages we've established we probably have decent fuel in the tank, we don't have fuel leaking out anywhere obvious and that the butterfiles and throttle linkeage appear to be opening and closing in a sensible way.

Oh and earlier in the day I can confirm tyre pressures were 36/36 but there was most of a dead wasp in the headlight surround.

Stop with the speculative "fix" and instead work on diagnostic methods within the situation.

I don't understand your point?

I said I'd check everything. Unless you want to remove wheels or the engine everything you need is in or should be in your tool kit!

And told you what I'd do.

Don't need to ask you anything to know what I would do, that would not make sense.

I'm just curious now as to what you did.

Meanwhile I'm at home smoking a ciggie with the RAC man as he unloads my bike and I can get a warm shower and my tea.

Quite difficult to diagnose when not on site.

Much easier when you've got whatever's faulty in front of you (or you at least know the bike)

if we've established that the throttle and clutch cables are both fully returned and aren't snagged on anything at the handlebars/ engine end then I'd probably be either looking at air intake or HT leads/plugs depending on what's easiest to get to first.

Nope. You said check fuel/air/spark/electronics. That's not a set of road-side things for people to check. The purpose of this thread is to see what people would actually do and how on the side of the road if their bike went splutter splutter stop. Anyone can say check out the fuel system. OK. I've got some basic tools and a pavement. How do I "check the fuel system" It's all about the real-world application of things many people just re-post on the forum. May I remind you of your Why? thread.

Starter is whizzing like a good-un. Dash and lights all good. Did however have a look at battery connections when I took the seat off. Nothing obviously amiss.

You'd have been waiting an hour for the RAC man to turn up sat outside a closed tile shop. In that time you'd have just picked your nose and scratched your ass? And at RAC renewal time they'd say "Well sorry mr.Saw, you called us out last year so your premium has doubled. Oh and you now have a bust bike on your driveway. What you going to do with it?

Sensible.
So bike's still hot so bit tricky to get plugs out without causing major burns. Even if I did get them out what am I checking for these symtoms? It's not like an intermittent misfire.

I've pushed both HT leads and neither felt loose.

Looking at air intake. I've taken top of airbox and filter off, same symptom. And following DaddyJobs advice I've checked for sensible operation of butterflies and throttle action. Please give next air intake test if you want to investigate air intake.

Tyres still inflated, reg/rec has not burst into flames, sun is still shining luckily.

Do you have anything tied into your fuel vacuum line - Scottoiler or headers for balancer gagues? I would check that all such connections are correctly in place and not obviously leaking vacuum away.

I would also check the electrical connections/cutout switches at the handlebars. Any sign of fraying/lose connections due to fitting of guards earlier in the day. Difficult to find shorts without a multimeter to hand but are all the little connectors for the cutout still in place? Did you dislodge any ignition wires at the headstock end? I would check both of those.

As it was f-ing cold yesterday have you suffered from some icing? My curvy used to stall even after a run when the revs dropped after a prolonged period of open throttle. Leaving it to "thaw out" with engine warmth is probably all you could do with the kit you had on you.
