We can rebuild it. We have the technology. We have the capability. Better than before. Better, stronger, faster.

Or at least thats the idea.

Thought I'd start today by draining the oil over the garage floor. You see I didn't have a pillow case to use as a sieve so opted for the Ladies Strongbow T-Shirt I won at the pub quiz the other night. Turns out thats a little to thick to take that quantity of oil. On the bright side, it wasn't that much oil.

Didn't see any great chucks of metal. Even stuck a magnetic reach over what I didn't have to mop up but it didn't get anything. That means one of three things, either there wasn't any, there was some and I didn't find it, or its all still left in the sump.

I've decided that Hayabusa pistons should be fun to do so if anyone has experience of this do let me know. The search tells me I need a hone, but is anything else required?

Oh, and while I'm at it I might as well do the cam swap so if anyone has any of the K3+ cams that I need do let me know. Alternatively as I've no idea what year the spare engine is will I be able to tell from the serial number?

Well stage one is complete, the engine is out of the frame.

A very big thank you to Stretchie without whom the removal would have been impossible. Taking the engine out is definitely a two person job.

An honorable mention must also go out to the good people at Irwin and Dremel who's tools made the job possible for us.

Stage two, find the damage will begin shortly...

Quote of the day:

Squirrel is putting kitchen towel down the top of the pistons

Stretchie: "What are you doing that for??"
Squirrel: "Incase anything gets in there and wrecks the engine!!"

Why does he think we are taking the engine out????

Five engines, there is only one common cause to these failures and I'm afraid that is you! I wouldn't bother attempting any tuning if a standard engine gets abused so much it blows.

FWIW I found my SV's oil consumption ranged from nothing to quite a bit purely depending on how much throttle I was using. Winter/wet and I'd never have to top it up, summer and I'd top it up every week. Either way it's so easy to check the SV there is no excuse.

Oh and I'm with DD and YC, it's a one person job to get the engine out (although easier with two).

I'm sure that an experienced mechanic could remove the engine on their own, I don't doubt that. I've taken engines out of other bikes myself before but as Druid said its easier with two, as maneuvering the engine out of the frame while keeping it balanced on a trolley jack is a bit of fun.

I might look at making some sort of jig to make getting it back in easier, not sure. Out of interest those that are happy taking it out on their own, is there a particular trick to make it easier that I'm missing or is it just down to being comfortable supporting the engine as it comes out the frame?

Just drop it onto the jack, then pick the engine up off the jack and kick the jack out of the way.

And now for the edited pictorial highlights...

The bike as it was, and will be again.

The lovely brown exhaust. Might look at tidying that up before it goes back in.

Halfway through the process...

The engine is out.

The remains of the bike.

As soon as I get a workbench I'll get to work stripping the engine down.
