Lol, your thou feels fast because of good acceleration (lots of power, not much mass), and you're a git, because I want one! Damn 33bhp license...

The force of air resistance is proportional to the square of velocity, so think about it P = Fv hence power is proportional to velocity cubed.

= to double the speed you need 8x the power
Ok..yes....point taken..air resistance plays a big part at high velocities

....but in my defence m'lud I did say 'basically'!

top speed is decided by power vs air resistance

Take a bike....the same one as before....work the air resistance into the equation....you still have a faster bike with more power and same weight! Or less weight and more power....that's what the top racing teams are forever doing, trying to increase power or lose weight?? They already have so much acceleration that slipper clutches have to be fitted!

Air resistance is the 'main' criteria at top speed I agree but it's very difficult to reduce, its not a common variable like the power and weight Chris!

One of my fav phrases;

"argueing with an engineer is like wrestling a pig, everyone gets dirty and the pig likes it"

Guess what I'm studying at uni

without wanting to urinate on your chips...

weight is a non-factor in terms of top speed because the system is in equilibrium

[blind with science]

top speed is attained when the power of the engine, transmitted as a force through the tyre propelling the bike forward is equal to the drag created by air flowing over the bike+rider - the velocity of the bike is not changing therefore acceleration is zero, F=ma, m can be whatever it wants to be because overall the force on the bike is zero, all the engine's power is being used to overcome drag

[/blind with science]

mass only plays a part when the bike is accelerating, so of two bikes with identical power outputs and aerodynamic properties the heavier bike will take longer to reach terminal velocity, but their final speed will be the same, defined by their drag and power output. and although i can't find the thread we've had this debate before somewhere

On the SV only around 120 indicated.....i never really had much interest in razzing it as its an A-B machine, not a sportsbike.

On the R6 add 30-40 odd to that. Thats indicated though and Yamaha clocks lie by all accounts (Private airfield so im not a hooligan!)

In reality though i dont travel at speeds above 100 with any regularity. IMO its all about useable power, leading to efortless overtakes. Give me good suspension over speed any day!

Its been said 100s of times... and the laws of physics always win!

The reason we are on a dissused airfield isnt because its long and flat so we can squeeze the most from the SV.... Its simply because its quite reckless to do it on the road, and completely against the law, most SV's with a decent rider could p!ss 132 as well . . but most decide that they like having a licence.
