Default Carbon Fibre exhausts on V-twin bikes?

I have tried searching for a definitive answer on this one but haven't relly got much...

Flicking through the lastest "RIDE" magazine i see in their Honda SP2 article they warn of V-twin bikes eating carbon fibre exhausts because of the power pulses. i have also heard of things like the heat taking it's toll on the cladding once the internals start to burn out

has anyone had issues with this, i'm looking at the scorpion street extreme and it comes in carbon fibre or titanium for £20 more, i'm tempted to go titanium

Ive heard of this too. From a local Scorpion dealer.

When i rang them up, very nice they were, they advised me not to go for the carbon one for that very reason. He said it will take time but it will happen.

I fancied the new street extreme too. But I havn't managed to find any pictures of one on an SV.

three videos

1: random find: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewsZXHz-E0A
2: with baffle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TVSIHx1-rQ
3: without baffle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNfVEZm5q7Q

two pics here, http://forum.svrider.com/index.php?P...&topic=85297.0 - damn carbon looks good, but if scorpion themselves are advising against it it'll have to be titanium

It wasn't actually Scorpion who advised not to, it was the local dealer. But he seemed genuine enough and they have a good reputation.

I have heard this also, but nothing definitive.

As my experience goes I run a CF Renegade. There was a little burn mark at the base of the can for a while. This was followed by discoloration of the CF from grey to brown. When the exhaust fell off I decided it was time to take the can off and examine it closer.

There was a crack in the sleeve about an inch long at the base. There was also a small 5mm wide 30mm long part of CF missing missing at the base I assume this was due to the vibrations as the sealant at both ends had given up sometime ago. Packing wise there was less then a quarter of what should be in it left.

So what can I say from all that... Renegade say you should repack every 5000 miles. My can had done around 20,000 without repacking and an unknown amount before I bought it. Maybe if I had repacked it would still be running. Either way I'm happy with it, the structure of the can is fine so all I need is a new sleeve and some packing and I'm sorted.

I still run a CF Renegade. So my feelings on their exhausts are obvious. However I would go for the Titanium as it looks better

sounds reasonable then, i know i've heard it mentioned several times in several different contexts, plus i don't think titanium can look bad

I had a CF Akrapovic on my SV which, after about 10k miles of fairly hard riding, split. In fact, the CF actually split around the rivets, alowing the the tube to slide "open". The dealer replaced it with a titanium one FOC.

However, I had the full Aprilia race CF cans on my Falco and they were fine.

Personally I would suggest that "race" cans probably need a bit more looking after than their road based relatives. I used to love CF cans but I now prefer Ti, it gives a classier look, IMPO.

I had a pair of Renegade carbon race cans on my old SV650 - quality and sound were suberb. Had them repacked after about 6000 miles, sold them to Kinesin after about 3 years and they were still in excellent condition.
