Re: Project: Garage Find
Keep in mind that the oil you add to your fuel reduces the amount of fuel in your fuel/air ratio, making it leaner. Too lean on the fuel/air ratio is just as bad as not enough oil in the mix.

Re: Project: Garage Find
Umm... Its still not perfect. Starting needs either carb blocked off with or without the choke. Needs a bit off warming up before its stable as well.
From what I've learned with the vacuum pipe, it suggests an air leak? But everything feels tight and I can't feel any drag like I get blocking the intake. Worse case is crank seals, but I hope its going to be something simpler. Trouble is I'm not sure where best to start looking and how best to locate the air leak? |

Re: Project: Garage Find
I haven't read all the way through this thread and I appreciate you have had the carbs apart and cleaned them, but did you also remove and clean through the little air bleed jet that is located on the bottom lip of the carb on the air cleaner side of the carb intake. This one is quite easy to miss when stripping and cleaning but it needs to be clear for these engines to run below 1,500 rpm.
Incidentally you can bleed the oil injection pipes through very quickly by taking the cover off the oil pump and holding the cam in the "throttle open" position whilst on tickover. |

[QUOTE=squirrel_hunter;2940499]
Need to get the air box back on and hopefully the starting will be better, hopefully it was just needing the introduction to starting. [QUOTE] The starting will be MUCH better once you get the airbox back on. I had assumed it was on so read through your previous posts. Lol air leak with no airbox on........ My mates TZR250 had been laid for a few years when we tried to start it. No joy with no air box. Fitted the airbox and 'made' an airfilter out of a t-shirt. We managed to get it running of sorts with that - had to keep the revs above 4500rpm which wasn't easy! Turned out the pilots were gummed up. We named that bike the 'Rab C Racer' after that effort. Get the airbox on and filter in. Or tell me it is please!

Re: Project: Garage Find
The airbox was off originally. Though that wouldn't have caused the bigger issues I had with the open vacuum pipe. However the airbox is now back on, with a new and oiled filter. Yes I need to adjust the idle again to compensate, but the starting is still a problem. It wants to start but will only when one of the carbs is blocked off, this is the problem I'm now at.
As for the pilot air jets, I did have them out and cleaned the first time and they were clear. The second time I just blew them out with compressed air along with the rest of the carb. |

Re: Project: Garage Find
Daft question, you have replaced the fuel and vac lines?
From what your describing its a air leak. You haven't got a pinhead hole in the diaphragms. Can you get hold of another set of carbs to check with? written with a brio

Re: Project: Garage Find
All rubber lines and intakes are new.
I don't have access to a set of known ready usable carbs. |

Re: Project: Garage Find
Takes out the obvious test. I know it's a ball ache but can you flip the carbs, so the right one is then on the left.

Re: Project: Garage Find
In theory I could, but then the idle and drain screws would be on the wrong sides and the vacuum pipe would be to short. So I’m pretty sure that I’ve not done that on accident and I don’t think to do that now will gain me anything.
