Any welsh people on the org ?....
Done a 4 day drive around wales last week, Fab roads, people etc.
One thing I noticed even in small villages, NO one spoke welsh. Any reason?... Or did they know I'm not welsh...lol.

Re: Any welsh people on the org ?....
My first holiday with my girlfriend (now my dear wife Lady Poppy) was in Snowdonia. Lots of Welsh speakers up there. First night we walked into the local pub of the tiny village we were staying at - it went dead quiet and everyone stared at us, just like that bit at the start of An American Werewolf In London. And then they all started talking Welsh. Lovely place mind but that was a bit surreal.

Its because its a dead language. Only a small but vocal number use it for comedy value, hence the multiple road signs.

Re: Any welsh people on the org ?....
Almost 23% of the people speak Welsh.
16% consider themselves fluent in the language. (reading, writing and speaking) And there's north dialect and south dialect which are different enough to be taught separately in on-line classes. I heard a (very) few people speaking in Welsh when I was there but never publicly. Was always a private conversation between mates. They do have quite a lot of music in welsh though.

Re: Any welsh people on the org ?....
Lots of folks are first-language Welsh, particularly in North and West Wales.
Less so here in Cardiff/south-east Wales, where the last census had Cardiff as about 13% of the population speaking Welsh to some degree or other. some districts have a lot of Welsh speakers, others, hardly any. Lots of adults learning Welsh at the moment (me inc) and my kids are both fluent, attending Welsh-medium High Schools. Welsh speakers will speak Welsh to other Welsh speakers and English to everyone else. It's almost instinctive. It's not meant to rude (for the most part), just how people are used to talking to their mates. If non-Welsh speakers haven't heard much Welsh then it's because the natives are being polite |

Because we are painfully polite and will default to English when non-Welsh speakers are around. I'm conversational Welsh speaker as my mum was a Yorkshirewoman, so we spoke English at home.

It's a valid word! Does exactly what it says on the tin.
In response to the OP, I find most Welsh people won't speak Welsh to you unless you speak Welsh to them, so, more often then not all conversations heard by non-Welsh speakers are in english. The exception is in very North Wales, they speak in Welsh all the time and hate being made to speak english. |
