Default Tanning salons, the new version of blackening your teeth?

This thought occurred to me the other day.
When sugar was first imported and the lower classes couldn't afford much they used to artificially blacken their teeth to give the impression that they could afford lots.

Now people go and either get spray painted with Cuprinol or (even worse IMHO) they lay in a skin cancer inducing coffin to pretend they can afford to go somewhere to get that level of exposure.

I just don't get it.

Maybe the next fad will be radiation, go and get your healthy green glow on a Chernobyl tour now!

Anyone got any thoughts?

I like the idea. I'm not bald, I can just afford to visit the hairdresser lots. I'm not fat, I can just afford to eat a lot of food. I'm ugly because... er... well I don't need to be handsome cos I'm loaded, right?

If only it were true

I have no idea why people feel any need to change their natural skin colour, but am I a hypocrite because I do dye my hair?

Shortly after the discovery of Radium, it was lauded as being a great health tonic and general fun thing. It was consumed in drinks, used in many household items and promoted as a good thing to have about the house. Obviously the associated risks of cancer were not known then.

As for tanning, I do my level best to avoid it. Even on a recent trip to Thailand it was remarked to me that my sun tan consisted of a mild change in my usual pallid sickliness!

Bring on the Gothic Darkness I say!

is it the same as having a sky subscription ( sky representative - "you must be mad not to take the deal!")
Wearing pristine knee sliders on the road
Drinking red bull - cos it gives you wings
Driving any car other than a dacia sandero

I'm always a bit weary of people with beards as they clearly have something to hide!

Brettus - I don't *think* this was a dig so I suggest you don't rise to it! And I have to ask if your OP question was brought on after one of your Cointreau, Draino and Ribena cocktails??

Yes, now is the time to figure out how to create a fake green glow so you cash in on it when the fad hits.

Beard envy is a terrible thing

Hah no, I don't need such flammable fuel for weird and wonderful thoughts.
I submitted a writing prompt to reddit while completely sober and you'd be forgiven for thinking the same: http://www.reddit.com/r/WritingPromp...world_because/

my presence is rather transient at the moment, I try to check in but rarely have much time to post. Usually just when I've had a nice drink
