Broken bike please help! need suggestions (engine noise)

My bike is a 1999 sv650 and its fine on tick over but when i rev it, it makes a knocking sound and also makes a grinding sound. Then it will cut out and not start for a while does anybody have a clue what it could be. and does anybody know the rough prices for a 2nd hand engine and how much it would cost to fit. Any suggestions what i should do???????

Check your oil, sounds as if you haven't got any!

If thats your problem its engine changing time as that is terminal though I imagine others will be here to confirm or suggest other avenues. Secondhand engines are £300 - 500, my last one was £375. As for fitting it a shop should charge a couple of hour labor and a bit for oil, filter etc so around £150 to fit. Try Speedwell Motorcycles, they have experience

But my suggestion would be to do it yourself. Swapping engines isn't that difficult though as a first time expect it to be a full days job. Not done one on an SV myself but its all pretty straight forward and will save you a bit of money.

Cheers mate it wasnt the oil i always checked it and when it broke down still had half in it. The engine has seized now and doesnt even start so i will get a 2nd hand engine thanks for the help

how many miles does the bike have on it? and how many miles can be expected from an engine?

My bike had 40765 miles and i done about 12000 miles on it and in all honesty i ragged it like mad for them 12000 miles and nothing had gone wrong till now. As long as you let the bike warm up well before riding i find the bikes can take the punishment well. does that help you???
