First off if you take them out be prepaired to fight with them for the next 2 hours to get the dam things back in!!!
The rubber has a larger bit at the top, this sits above the fairing. The shaft of the rubber then has a rib on it, the screen sits between this and the fairing. At the end of the rubber there is a metal thread inside that squashes the rubber when tightened and thus holds your screen in place. (Am doing this from memory 2 months ago so I am ready to be corrected)
As for getting them back in I found getting them on the fairing first then attaching the screen was best. Wiggling them around with the bolt in the oposite end and lots of swearing also helped
