Default help i smell burning wires

can anyone help? i just got back off my hols and went to start the bike up thismorning and it was tuning over then all ignition lights went off, so i took cowl off moved the 2 electrical boxes under the seat around till the lights come back on
then went to start it again same happens,
finally i think i got it to stay on whilst holding one of the boxes and i had my clutch held in by electricians tape
it started turning over but not starting (i think the wires were still lose) then i smelt burning

so back to them two little black boxes under the seat can anyone help me with what wires i need to be looking at, also any other info that you think will help me would be much appreciated

Check for any chaffing were the loom passes by the bolts that attach the riders seat to the sub-frame, major hot spot for fraying wires

The Click bit is really a very good point you know. Black boxes under seat Random guess would say that one houses the fuses for lights and ignition. The other the headlight relay switch.

Hmmm ,
Not something as silly as loose battery terminals is it?

Had problem like this on my bosses DR200 last week!

Everytime she went to start it,all the lights went off.........and then nothing, reason for this is that the Starter draws alot more current,so bad connection= HIGH resistance=HEAT! So may be worth checking the simple stuff first!

Although could be a short-circuit.
