I have a slight problem... I have some body work for an old Yamaha, the lower fairings to be precise. I have the left and right hand side which are joined together at the bottom by two metal hinges. My problem is they are seized. I need to separate them so suggestions please?
I have tried with WD40 on similar ones before and this has no effect as I imagine there is rust within the hinge. I doubt I'm the first to have the problem with this design so hopefully there is a known cure? Other things to note is that I have considered grinding the rivets off to remove the hinge in total to work on it separately but at the moment would prefer not to. Also if interesting chemicals are required damage to paint work is not an issue as these fairings require spraying. For reference here is a picture of the offending hinges: ![]() In a somewhat related thought I may regret starting this project as I'm off to buy shares in the WD40 company after having another look at the rust on the bike. |

Bit of warming with a hot air gun?
On a low setting, so plastics not melted, or punch the hinge pins with a small punch? But grinding the rivets off might be the only option? Some other clever **** will come up with a better solution, mines just a personal theory, untested, untried and probably completely useless ![]()

Seen this a couple of times, I've needed to remove the hinges from the bodywork to free them off, as the effort needed to move them would have pulled the fixings out of the plastics which would have been worse to fix obviously.

Firstly, what makes you think a water displacement spray would unsieze a rusted hinge?
Drill out the pop rivets, and replace the hinges with decent replacements.

What would a decent replacement hinge look like and where would I get a pair? |

What old Yamaha has these type of hinges between the fairing lowers - are they standard fit?

Do you mean ACF50? - that's neither lubricant nor penetrant.

Drill rivets, remove hinges and immerse in duck oil or similar penetrating fluid, preferably warmed, maybe on a radiator leave for 48 hours to soak, then try to move, if not leave for 12 hours and continue trying to move, until they free up, do this is if you want to keep these hinges-patience and gentle persuasion required, or just buy new hinges maybe from DIY place.
