Chain problems

Just lubing the chain on my bike when I saw this. Looks like a rubber seal or something coming off. Chain was new when I bought the bike. Do I need to be worried?

It's one of the O rings coming loose from the rivet link.

Looks like somebody did a bit of a rough job attaching it, possibly clamping it up too tight before rivetting.


There is no immediate danger, however with no O ring the grease is not kept IN and the crap is not kept OUT, therefore it might be an idea to replace the rivet link or wear rate may be much faster than the rest of the chain.

How many miles has the chain done and is it otherwise in good condition?

Not sure of miles but pretty new. Any Ideas where I can get the right sorted. Bike garage I reckon. I bought the bike with a three month warranty but was from Grimsby

You were right Yorkie. I popped in to a garage and they confirmed that the joining link had been over tightened splitting the o ring. They said they can replace the link for around £25 as rest of chain is fine. Just hope they can get hold of a new link as the chain is an 'Iris', not one I have ever heard of...

Oh, there's loads. Its not a problem, they should sort it easily. Its something you could have done yourself with the right tools. But then, you would have had to buy the tools! So for a quick fix that's probably about right

Yeah, seemed reasonable to me. Went to Pattersons in Penarth and they were really helpful. I told them I live near Pontypridd and they recommended I went to GP Motorcycles which is a lot closer. Fair play to them, not many garages would recommend you go somewhere else because it's closer to where you live

Good mate, glad it worked out. Always a bit tricky recommending someone but I found them to be very down to earth and affable. I've heard a lot about GP Motorcycles on the Welshbikers forum. Perhaps you can pop your head in there as you'll get some better local reviews and recommendations than I can give. Another friendly bunch too (though not as crazy as this place ).

Well done for spotting it. I know people who don't do their own servicing who would never have spotted that.

Have been doing a bit of research on Iris chains online, and to be honest most people seem to slate them. I'm not going to take any chances with my chain, so have ordered one of these instead:
