I've been looking for a second hand replacement shock for a while but suitable ones are few and far between. ZZR 1400 seem to be the most common but I'm only 80kilos and would probably need to get it resprung and serviced, putting the cost up towards the £200 mark.
A new YSS is available for around £250; 2 year guarantee, servicable and with compression/rebound adjustment. Has anyone tried one or knows someone who has? I'm looking for a little feedback before I pull the trigger. |

Look a Jaynes bike build, I'm sure she went for one and was very happy with it.

Yeah. I saw Jane's post. They were YSS twin shocks, not the mono, but she did seem pleased with them.

I replaced the stock one on my K5 with a Hagon unit when I got the bike last year and it's been faultless for the last 9k odd miles. They're around the same price point as the YSS units.

The only thing is with hagon they might be "alright" for hacking around town on but I wouldn't really class them as decent. Tried a few on pointy and curvy and they feel rock hard in comp damping and weak in rebound, adjuster is worse than useless as it's a bi directional one which nobody has sussed right.
For that money you could get a second hand penske...

I have a YSS to go on the Grom, just got to get round to fitting it. They seem a popular option...

when i bought my Nitron i looked at all the options of the likes, bitubo, penske, elka etc.etc but decided on the Nitron for many reasons. they are built in the UK and its a UK company so keeping British in a job. they are very well built and get rave reviews. with it being a UK company i can send the shock back to the factory and get them to service it instead of somebody who says they can. i got my shock custom built (shorter) at no extra cost. if i want to upgrade to say a three clicker when funds allow i just send it back to Nitron and they can upgrade it.
never regretted buying a Nitron. ooohhh and they hold their value very very well, just look on ebay and see how many second hand ones there are up for sale... that tells you something. yes ok so YSS may be cheeper but by cheep buy twice. a good shock they might be but whats the customer service like, backup support for spares and servicing. |

Going on same sort of lines as bibio here is reason I went penske...
Build quality, probably about the same, end of day there's only so well you can anodise ally and they're both good. They're american which is a bit of a down side, the workings of them is imperial which means having a couple of different spanners. However they are transparent and the UK agent is brilliant to deal with. Want setup advice? no problem. Want parts? There's a full parts list, exploded diagrams and service manual with the shock. Just ring them and order what you need. O rings are all standard and specified so if you're in a rush just buy them from down the road. Want to upgrade it? Buy the bits and do it yourself, it's dead easy. Or send it to the UK dealer. What put me off nitron was the attitude of "yes send it back and we can do x for you (£xxx)" , they wouldn't talk, they wouldn't help, it was all superdupersecret stuff (fk off...) and it got my back up.
