Default Gladius Oil Cooler

I thought the Gladius ran the same oil cooler as the Pointy SV. But its been brought to my attention that its not... I've had a look at the parts fiche and sure enough it is different. The best way I can describe it is there is a pick up in front of the oil filter which appears to be plumbed into the water pump and then somewhere else. Unfortunately I can't see from photos for sure where and thus how it works.

Anybody know?

No one knows how the Gladius Oil Cooler works, and what would be needed to fit it to a SV?

I believe it's a water-oil cooler.

Not sure why you'd bother, though I do think they allow the oil to come up to temp faster from a cold start.

If I wanted to fit an oil cooler to a Curvy I'd need a Pointy engine, then I'd need to swap the alternator along with the exhaust. Alternativly...

Yeah I've seen that info and very interesting it is. However I am thinking the Gladius version might be a little easier to fit. I'm just not sure what parts I would need to change.

Default it's called a "heat exchanger" (zombie thread update)

there is a coolant gizmo plumbed at the bottom of the oil filter. heat from the oil is dumped into the coolant (i.e., exchanged) and that heat is then dumped into the radiator to cool down everything in totality. many cars have this: my opel/vauxhall omega had a similar gizmo fitted to the engine on the engine block at the bottom of the V between the cylinder banks.

3 good things about heat-exchangers for oil cooling, some pretty minor but still:
  • the engine warms up faster (oil and water heat up together and only when the entire engine is up to temp is when the cooling fan runs)
  • less potential for oil leaks (same fragile finned oil cooler is not in the path of rocks getting thrown up by the front wheel)
  • less aero drag (no finned oil cooler hanging out in the wind)
i have not yet, but i'm debating retrofitting a gladius oil heat exchanger to my pointy.
