So... replaced my seriously knackered chain tonight with a lovely new Gold DID X-Ring (didn't want the gold but twas all m&p had in stock as I didn't want the O-Ring and needed next day delivery). For the sake of my own curiosity I placed the new and old one side by side, the old one was over 2 links longer!
Now I'm pretty sure that I've been sent the correct one and am confident of the original as I trust the guys who fitted it. But to grow by 2 whole links !?! is this possible and where is the growth from? Puzzled of Swindon ![]() |

If the number of links are physically the same you will find the stretch comes from the pins wearing the inside of the rollers of each link. This is why you have to adjust your chain. The rings, O, X or whatever are there to purely keep the lubricant inside the roller.

Chains dont stretch. End of..
Wear on the joints adds up to give the illusion of stretch. |

Hope you are replacing the sprockets as well.A chain that worn will have worn the teeth to suit it and they in turn will chew up the new chain.

Yep sprockets done at the same time, along with a little cleaning (forgot the rear wheel was silver).
I understand that the chain doesn't stretch the links ie the solid metal part, but I still find it amazing that it has grown by 2 whole links, wouldn't have thought that there was enough slack available around the pivots to do this. Thanks for the explanations, enlightened of Swindon ![]() |

There's an awful lot of links to wear, hence the growth.
