Question Ignition Barrel Help!

Help - my ignition barrell has decided it doesn't like my key anymore!!!!

I have tried using a lock cleaning spray on it and this doesn't work, the symptoms are as follows:

When you put the key in it you are unable to turn it from the steering lock position to the OFF position, then when you finally manage to do this you are then unable to turn it from the OFF position to the ON position.

It took me 10 minutes and brute force to finally get started this morning.

When I managed to get here I gave it a spray with some WD40, and will check in a minute to see how that goes.

Has anyone else experienced these issues?

What was the fix?

I'll summarise what I think SoulKiss' thread says at the end.

The problem you have is a sticky spring in the lock. Treat with a good dose of WD40, leave overnight. In the morning, put your key in the lock, and give a good short sharp tap with a hammer. Note: TAP!!!

Hey-presto. Stick some more WD40 down there too.

(I had the same thing, but a friend of mine knows more about locks than the Pope knows about Christianity).

Just a tap?

Can anyone quantify a tap for me before I wheel out a sledge-hammer........

I've just read another posting suggesting a tap with your fist?

So I don't need a new barrell then? PHEW!

A sharp blow with your fist would probably do the trick. Put your gloves on, and if you hurt your fist, you hit it too hard.

My mate got one of these out the back of his van...

At first I thought that he was going to tickle it! It looks like the kind of hammer you'd get out of a Christmas cracker. Really light weight (as in probably 200g or less!), and he didn't put much force behind it at all.

Think of it like trying to knock on your mates door with your hand, without waking kids up, and you should be fine.

Although, hit it too hard, and you probably will need a new ignition barrel (and keys). Best to start soft, and if it doesn't work, get more frustrated... erm, I mean hit it a little harder.

Looks like the WD40 did the trick today, but will see in the morning how it goes - thanks for all the top notch advice (AGAIN!!!)

I don't rate lock cleaners, every time I've used a cleaner/deicer I've had problems straight after. Seems to take the lubrication out. I just use engine oil- WD40's a great water dispersal agent and a not bad corrosion inhibitor but it's a crap lube.
