OK.

See... this is what I dont get.
Has anyone ever heard of the IRA? I dunno. Ring any bells?

I mean... I could go on. If that's not reminding anyone.

My point is... this is not a new thing.
I just want to repeat that.
This is NOT a new thing. The Ra et al have been blowing seven shades of scuttery sh!te out of the UK, mainland and up north, for ages.

Point 1.
The Brits did not fly planes over Ireland and bomb the place into oblivion.

Point 2.
They didn't suddenly realise that British people all had to be watched, all of the time, and peoples civil rights were seriously egregiously eroded.

What changed?
Were the IRA not quite good enough? Not up to snuff?
I would imagine the people got got blown up didn't really differentiate. Being blown up is much the same as being blown up I would have thought.

Fair enough, the odd SAS unit accidentally wandered over into the Republic, and a few lads got shot. Fair enough some bad things were done in the name of Britain. I was put in a few tricky spots when I opened my mouth in London once or twice.

But... Britain more or less went about its business. Why is it now, all of a sudden "sweeping powers" are needed. "New paradigms" are announced. "Everything is changed". "We are living in a post 9-11 world".

Bo11ocks.

We are living in the same world as we always have.
The ONLY thing that has changed, is that America has, finally, seen some action. Now everything changes?

No. Boys and girls... you are being sold a line.
It is story. Its scary monsters time.
Brad Pitt doesn't play these bombers. therefore they are the real bad ones.

I agree philipMac - it's really baffling for anyone who saw the IRA campaign (and that's really anyone aged 25+), that was far more a "state of war" than this by-definition-never-ending "war on terror" we have now, if we're going on body count alone it was certainly a far more bloody affair.

Like you, I recognize that attrocities could be found on both sides, the Easter Uprising didn't exactly cover us in glory, and as far back as the 1798 rebellion the British arguably sowed the seeds of sectarianism (gee, thanks for that) and pretty much massacred thousands of people.

But like you say, during the 80s and early 90s we actually lived under a constant threat of real terrorism, and yet we never saw the need to erode civil liberties. Back then we were dealing with people who didn't really want to get caught, if we are now dealing with people who don't care if they live or die then cameras and ID cards are even less likely to stop those, being primarily tools for catching people after the event.

You forgot Warrington, which was actually a revenge attack for the capture and imprisonment of terrorists from an earlier thwarted attack on the towns gasworks.
