Ok. So if you were to label a bike based on the work done:

Whats the difference between say an SV with a USD front end, single sided swinger, and custom made exhaust... And a bike that looks like it had a fight with the Demon Tweaks catalog?

a bike thats had mods.. new zaust etc, would be modified in my books
a bike that has different bikes parts bolted on would be custom..
and a bike built from many different bikes or home made parts would be a special

my guess anyhow lol,

dunno
special ...one thats been made up of a lot of different other bikes?
but then suzys special too, cause she was a restoration! nothing could have been that rusty prior to being transformed

custom... built from frame up i.e one thats been made out of a load of fat tubing and been fabricated from the ground up

modified ... added bits to an original spec bike, such as for example my hi level can (on its specially made link pipe)

What the owner will describe it as depends solely on their personal feeling, but they are all much abused terms. Just recently someone posted up what they thought was an "extreme makeover" as far as I could see it was all bolt ons, of which none were at all "extreme".

"One swallow does not a summer make."

And a chavvy mismash of modern day bike bling does not a special make either. If someone has put some work in rather than having an "Anodised Bike Bits 'R' Us" catalogue on wheels then it might be.

Some examples:
SV + can or full system; not even modified - it's just an exhaust.
SV + GSXR shock; not even modified - it's just a replacement shock.
SV + GSXR front end; lightly modified.
SV + turbo; modified.
SV + SSSA; modified.
SV + 850cc motor, flatslides, R1 front end, AP radials, complete RC30 bodywork, RGV swinger, magnesium wheels, Penske shock: special.
SV + 14" over "Swedish look" front end, peanut tank, apehangers, 16" rear wheel with car tyre, 21" 80 spoke front wheel, Maltese cross side mounted rear light, Bates headlight, Vikings and naked women paint; custom.

IMO

A custom is a bike generally built from the ground up based around an engine or frame where a lot of the parts are manufactured individually for the bike or aftermarket parts are modified to suit.

A special bike is one where an entire base bike is used, like an SV, but again parts are either manufactured specifically or outsourced in order to make the bike a one off of its kind, for example an sv with has parts that have had to be modified (machined etc) in order to fit and change the appearance of the bike but still leaving the bike looking like the orginal base bike.

A modified bike would be a bike in which parts are used to better the characteristics of the bike, things like hardware to increase power or better the handling.

I would also say that there is a difference between a custom bike and a customised bike. Customised to me is to add parts that are made for the bike or universal parts which require no modification and minimal effort. A custom bike, well see above.

Obviously this is all just my opinion.
