Take the rear wheel out. Or at least slide it up to give enough slack in the chain to get it round the sprocket.

Will try these ideas. Trying to avoid any more work than possible as I have spent so many hours on the bike recently I am getting fed up being in the wee dark cold shed. I want to be out scratching the roads!!!!!

Regarding carb I think there some gunk residue from old petrol. Also check the straightness of the jet needle.

The chain is now back where it should be. The main prblem was the lack of clearance between the front sprocket and the frame. I could have done it in 5 minutes if I could have gotten the front sproket off, but didn't have the correct size of socket. It is sorted now, so one less thing to do before I get the old SV back on the road!!!
