I'm looking at one of these (making) and sticking the reflector on the plate or numberplate light
Exactly the same as the one I just sold by the look of it. At the buy it now price on that auction, don't bother making it, just buy that one.

If you were to take a normal standard numberplate and stick a reflector onto it, but in between the lettering and the bottom of the numberplate, not obscuring any of the registration lettering, would that be legal?
To get back to the original question. Strictly not legal, you are only allowed the registration, designated national symbol and the makers details on your number plate. So, no reflectors, no advertising, nothing.

However, as far as I remember this isn't part of the MoT test so you won't get failed for it. In theory you could get a ticket for it, but you would really have to p*** Mr Plod off big-time (or have his wife riding pillion ) before he would bother.

MOT test requires a proper retro-reflective unit

"Reflecting and Retroreflective tape must NOT be regarded as a substitute for an obligatory reflector."

-Sec 1.4 MOT manual

Plenty of stations will turn a blind eye but if you want to be 100% legit you need a proper one

It would be a proper one, it's the proper bolt on one off the OEM snow shovel, just that it would bolt onto the numberplate at the bottom without obscuring the registration lettering.

I think Keith has answered the question though, and if I'm doing it I may as well do it legit. It will be very easy to make a bracket to hang the same reflector flush below the numberplate, so I'll just do that.

Thanks for all the replies folks.

Given the legal side of things (same deal here) I'd extend the tail tidy so that a 3"x1" rectangular reflector (might as well make it a useful size) can be bolted on at the bottom edge of the plate.

BTW, I'd be more inclined to cut, drill, grind and lighten the original part than to mess around with aluminium.

Mot - needs a reflector, stuck over the company who made the plate im not sure how they go about that

Mot - number plate light, if no wiring or fixing it cant be tested so if its not there will not be part of MOT

Law - you need to display the company who made the plate and a BS mark*

*afaik
