Default Use of horn

What do you use the horn for?? or indeed, do you ever use it??

It struck me today that I am not sure I have ever used the horn in an emergency ... generally speaking I am too busy trying to avoid stuff ... be this braking or turning (generally requires a combination of the two) to start taking up brain and finger power sitting on the horn ...

But I do use the horn on most rides however ... I tend to use the horn primarily on little back roads where I can't see properly round the corner (and the road is only 1 car-ish wide) as a form of warning that someone is coming!! ... that and saying 'hi' if I spot someone I know ... finally, although for many it is their prime use, I pretty much never use the horn as a form of cussing ...

Cant say I use the horn much at all, if i do it's generally after someone has just caused me to take avoiding action and with twin horns they certainly hear you!

The use of the horn is to make your presents known to other road users and not to remonstrate with another driver.

And I do my best to follow this. I regularly have to use mine around Sunny Swindon as although it is the land of roundabouts it appears that no one living here knows how to use one. Its simple really, give way to the right. Its not pull out on me cause you didn't even look right, and its not my favorite which is stop at the entrance to a mini roundabout because you have seen another car on the road - who has stopped on their entrance because they have seen another car, and so on. But I digress...

When I do use my horn I have a particular way of using it. I press the button and hold it on. Then people notice you. I'm not one of these little blip people I'm going to make sure you notice me. From experience though eventually the horn seams to fizzle out, shame.

As for remonstrating, I find that a Renegade can with very little baffle in bouncing of the rev limiter and exploding next to the drivers window usually gives a good message.

If you have time to use your horn, there'e no drama. You have made the desicion not to take serious avoiding action and in effect, shout at the other road user instead.

I do it all the time!

Mind you, I have twin 10 inch air horns! Ooohhhhh feel the power!!!!

I have a great way of using the horn too, press the button and.....

Silence!

I ride an SV, the bloody horn doesn't work once the engine's warmed up.

Use mine to get noticed. If I think they have not seen me, they get a long blast till they look and I get eye contact. In the meantime I'll be planning my escape from the gormless driver brigade.

+1

By the way what do people on this org have against squirrels? We've got a hunter a killer and a flamer. Seems a tad harsh to me.

I mainly use mine to express my irritation with the fact that I've had my helmet on and the engine running for 5 minutes, and SVTonyB's still trying to remember which pocket his keys are in. Also for demonstrating the fact that I have very loud horns- I reckon half the times they've ever been used was just showing them off. Oh, and that time on teh AR that I inexplicably pressed the horn not the starter.

I never use it to "sound off" at people, can't see the point, at best they'll ignore it and at worst they'll get angry.
