Was in the garage tonight adjusting the clutch cable at the engine side when I looked and my sprocket and realized it wasn't quite right. The sprocket nut and tab washer were missing.
I have a feeling it may not have been torqued correctly when I changed the chain (that bit was not done by me) but it had lasted for quite some time regardless. But when I did this I did fold the edges of the tab washer over the best I could. This involved hammering a small screw driver down the back to get it started and then moving to a bigger screw driver to get more angle over a number of sides of the nut. But is there a better way to bend this washer over or a trick that anybody knows of? BTW the bike is still on the road, I had a spare washer that I bought ages ago when I did the chain and took the sprocket nut off my spare engine. Properly torqued it up and then hammered the tab washer as described above. |

The Haynes manual says to use pipe grips to bend it over the washer stops the nut coming off!! So how did it?

Whenever I've had my C&S changed I've seen the mechanics use a small screwdriver to bend it up. Just make sure it is bent up at a right angle and the edge is sitting against the flat of the nut. HTH

Pipe Grips you say, would I find these at my local B&Q?
And while I think of it, any tips for getting them off again? |

![]() ![]() The problem with hammering against the nut is that you could end up cracking the tab washer as it is too tight a bend. I too use a pipe wrench and never ever reuse a washer. Lesson learn't many years ago when the fianl drive of the 1750 Austin Maxi was held on with a big nut and tab washer. Engine out and engine/gearbox split just to replace a 20p washer when ever they failed which they did on a regular basis. Having done it once to repair the manufacturers fault. You would not want to do it again because of your own incompetence

I had this happen on my SV, in fact the front sproket fell off too... found the nut in the belly pan stuck in a oil build up.
