I went up to Airlie Tower today. It's about a 3/4 mile walk up. Cool castle, but pity you can't get up to the top to see over the trees and make the most of the views

Yeh it's really cool. I wanted to go up to the top :D
I've been riding round that area for years and never spotted it. Just noticed it last week and had to go check it out. Now that I know it's there, it can be seen from miles away in loads of directions. I kept looking over my shoulder the rest of the day seeing how far away I could see it from :p
This replica of one of the towers on Airlie Castle commemorates the death in the Boer war of one of the earls of Airlie.

Where exactly is it? I tried google but it keeps coming up with a dozen locations :/
You start in Dykehead and take the Glen Prosen road for maybe a mile then you will see a stone monument by the road side. Go past that around the corner till you get here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=dykehead,+angus&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Dykehead,+Angus,+United+Kingdom&gl=uk&ll=56.732918,-3.029394&spn=0.006179,0.01929&t=h&z=16&layer=c&cbll=56.733008,-3.029486&panoid=3D6a056p3N6DiqnM-AOR_g&cbp=12,13.35,,0,13.62). There's a small car park there, then you just walk up to the tower (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=dykehead,+angus&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Dykehead,+Angus,+United+Kingdom&gl=uk&ll=56.739321,-3.023772&spn=0.006226,0.01929&t=h&z=16).

Still too early for a ride to the mountains here. :(
At least it's starting to look like spring nearer to home although it was quite cool with strong winds today.

I did the tummel road on the way home
I know what you mean about the Laggan road. It just flows brilliantly. I think that's only the second time I've done it. Didn't remember it at all until I passed a junction where a pic was taken of me on the tzr and it jogged my crappy memory. Although it was 2 years ago

Those are the only steeeeeeep hairpins on that run. I just about managed, its not the bike, I have a phobia of steep left hand downhill bends. Everything to the right is fine, can go up them all too....just not down left, very odd, and harks back to my early days with the SV :(
The route we took, was Howarth, Pendle watery thing, Colne, Trawdon, Cold thingy bob, Widdop, Hebden. give us five and I'll link it up, so if you ever get down this way you can play :)

We all have our demons hun, both me and smudge were nipping wide when people and things pulled quick into view. Me because of that bloody deer, Smudge because of his off.....none of us are perfect, and if we claim we are superior, and our technique is advanced.......we'd be feckin lying!
I'm just glad I can handle any bike after having the caesarian, its major surgery, and some ladies can't do anything for 12 months, I must be well hard, I got back on after six weeks! I'm physically and mentally not quite where I should be yet, which is why I enjoy the company of those riders who are just happy to enjoy a day ride taking in scenery, and not gunning it everywhere to prove a point. :)

What's the pendle watery thing? Tis a cracking road, done it a fair few times on the 125 now, one of mine and YC's favourite roads. If you catch it when the sun is setting the light thrown on the hills is just beautiful.
Here's a few photos from a ride Melody and I went on Good Friday, some on that same Widdop road:

I meant Ponden, just to add, the tarmac on that road is so smooth its superb, Smudges suspensions rather hard, and he errrrr notices a lot o bumps!
went for a ride with my dear old dad "Lol" former member here.
having a nice ride out over the passes but his Triumph Trophy started missfiring and spluttering.. :0( so we cut it short untill it cut out all together, so he nicked off on my bike and I waited for his return with Thunderbird 2 and a trailer :0)

Man I love aberfeldy and Pitlochry... That whole area infact. Some cracking exploring roads around there, not necessarily riding roads bit just amazing. I have Soooo many memories from that area over the years.
My work has a massive project up there in griffin forest at the moment, if I wast offshore i would be fighting for that project.

I haven't done much exploring around Aberfeldy really. I'm usually just passing through, heading west. A lot of the time to Oban

There a road that goes from Kiltyrie to the Bridge of Balgie... Then if you take a leftand follow that road to Pubil... The road ends I'm terms of what on the map but there's a massive oil/gas pipeline with a construction road that leads to Glenloachay, and ultimately back to Killin falls... It's bloody epic, not fast but technical.

Sometimes the most unorganised bike runs turn out just fine.
Bikenut (with the R1) and myself had planned to go to Ullapool a couple of Sundays ago. The weather was bloomin marvelous, too good to waste.
We were a bit late in leaving home so got to our first fuel stop in Lochcarron at 15:50. Quick ice-cream by the lochside then re-fill and off we go. Well, would have but they closed the pumps at 4pm while we ate them 20ft away. Thats the same shop we bought the ice-creams in, they might have warned us!
So, we cant make it to Ullapool now on half empty tanks. Two options - turn back home or make for Applecross with it's community run self service 24hr pump. Option 2, hell yeah!
As some on the .org will testify, the road to the top of the Bealach is an eye-opener. This is what greets you at the start...
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u220/madmud75/applex.jpg
Because of it's reputation as a "bucket list" must-do destination, you're always going to get a few fellow riders and petrolheads on this route. We were not, however, prepared for the almost continuous onslaught of what must have been the entire Alfa Romeo UK Owners club heading down as we fought our way up the hairpins. I kinda lost my rhythm in the twisties, too busy eyeing up some lovely Italian exotica whilst keeping one eye on the armco inches from my left kneeslider. I didn't manage to get any pics of them as once you start the climb you're committed til you reach the summit. :rambo:
Once up there, chances are visibility on top (2000ft+) are nothing like those at the bottom when you set out at sea level. But we got lucky this time.

What goes up.....
http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u220/madmud75/applex8.jpg
Once down the other side we filled our bellies with the most gorgeous 'pub grub' in the best location possible. Sitting outside Applecross Inn, pint in hand, looking back to the Cuillin ridge is just special. Do it.
We then took the coast road back, more stunning scenery there. There was a massive hill fire over in Torridon that day. It's not unusual to see in the highlands in early summer, but this was huge. We could see the whole moor on fire, and though we were 30miles away could smell the burning heather through our lids. We realised the extent of damage on the news when we got home, with villages evacuated for safety and many fire tenders called out. :smt103
On our return to Skye we were graced with this stunning sunset at the Skye Bridge. Great ride, great views, great times.

Despite it being the monsoon season here, I braved the rains on Sunday and rode to the mountains.
Mostly rode in the rain, fortunately the sun had popped out as I was on top of the mountains and I got to try out the camera on my new phone.

Chapeau fella, lots of miles right there. How do you get from the Lakes to N. Wales? If I could work out a way to get there that does not involve the M6 I'd go more often.
Hehe you were right the 1st time Mike ;) 2 trips! Put near enough 800 miles in 2 weekends on it.
2bh theres no direct route other than the mway  i'd suggest getting off the M6 at Preston, trundling up the A6 for a bit and then doing this (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Preston+Lancaster+New+Rd%2FA6&daddr=53.97729,-2.82196+to:54.07714,-2.71189+to:Casterton,+Lancashire+(Devils+Bridge)&hl=en&ll=54.062209,-2.685471&spn=0.314338,0.617294&sll=54.02552,-2.684784&sspn=0.314615,0.617294&geocode=FTiTNgMd5o_V_w%3BFcqgNwMduPDU_ynb4MV68mN7S DGB-vHXnvkMEw%3BFdQmOQMdrp7W_yn7WIaj7IJ8SDHRGxRCvGIQEw %3BFYYAOwMdUnfY_yE6j1uCJN5uvA&mra=dpe&mrsp=2&sz=11&via=1,2&z=11). Nice twisties upto Glasson Dock (another bike meet) and you can decide where you want go from Devils. I'd say M6 Jct 31, Ribchester, Waddington, Slaidburn, Trough of Bowland is a good way to get up there too if you've got all day :)
Was out racking a few more miles up the other night, straight from work this time :smt003 i'm getting that sinking feeling that another winter will soon be here :(
Jumped on the M6 which I never normally do so I could get to my destination quicker....

Haha, I think the last time I was there was about 9 years ago, but most of my trips aren't direct at all, so start with either South wales or Exmoor, so I have to put a cut off point to turn around and head back, normally it's whitehaven/Penrith/Hartside.
well overdue a "up north" trip, which would obviously start with a mile munching blat, and then start touring from that point on.
Cheers Mark.
