yep Hargreaves was fantastic last night. he won nearly every tackle, broke up a lot of sveeeedens midfield play, made up for the lack of effort from mr beckham.
definately beckhams worst game for a number of years IMHO.

can't argue that he didn't play well - we shall see how plays for the rest of the tournement thats all i'm saying i really don't rate the guy
Beckham I thought had an alright game not good not bad just alright
i'm just saying it how i saw it. he was MOM for me. woulda been joe cole but he got snuffed out in the second half.
i don't expect hargreaves will start another game for us unless there's an injury or suspension. he probably got the nod ahead of carrick due to his tournament experience, can't argue with that reasoning.
going back to last nights "poor" showing, it doesn't help when you've worked all week on tactics and game plans then they're turned upside down within 55 seconds!
YOU WONDER WHY THE SCOTS HATE ENGLAND???
Did you know that it was stated during the Germany V Equador game that England now have Equador in the next round???
When did that happen???
If you loose to Sweden tonight and they win the group and get Equador...
Makes my blood boil!!! Even made me want to support Henrik and his pals...
COME ON SWEDEN!!!
never mind eh.
your blood pressure back to normal yet?

Tara...Knowing that you have a knowledge of football, your comments I find very surprising. It's as if you just don't like the guy and prefer him not to be there. :? On his performance last night, he will be one of the easier picks for the next game.
I would consider resting Lampard, keep Hargreaves and allow Steve Gerrard his free roaming role. This can be done with Hargreaves in the team as his hard work in the Bayern Munich team is what has allowed Michael Ballack the freedom to shine for them.
I have to disagree with you PH.
Hargreaves worked hard but that was about it. He looked average in an average looking team. He was no worse than anybody else but he certainly didn't stand out, unlike Joe Cole who is just on fire at the moment.
Hard to leave out of the next game. . . . . . . . .I'm not sure about that!!!! However knowing that Sven has always favoured him in his selection I believe that he'll be there.
One of the more positive aspects of the dismal 2nd half is that even when the team isn't playing well we are still able to score the odd goal and I believe this will help us through the next stages.
The next problem we have is do we play the untested Walcott?? Sven must now be kicking himself. In the 2 friendlies prior to the WC Walcott didn't exactly shine did he.
As for Hargreaves, does he deserve his place, for me I'm still not convinced.

Keith I agree having all your tactics etc wiped out in 55 seconds didn't help one bit last night
and as for disliking him its not that - i just don't rate him sorry next thing you know they'll bring on calamity James and then i think we're screwed again just my opinion

Argentina v Holland today.
That should be a super game of footie. If we were playing either of them in the next stage then that would be panic button time.

dunno if it'll be that good TBH. both are through so the edge might be taken off the game. i reckon you'll see a lot of possesion from both teams, plenty of players rested.

Joe Cole played really well that footwork of his was outstanding
I agree with you about hargreaves and no i don't think he deserves his place in the team
If Hargreaves doesn't deserve his place then Beckham surely doesn't!!! He was woeful. The guy is supposed to be the best passer of the ball yet hardly any of his passes went to man. Least Hargreaves is willing to work for his place.
England need a big time change, they need to be coached to win not just to compete.

Swiss and Tara...I totally accept your points of view but must stress that every team needs a grafter to allow the more expansive players to be released. A prime example of that is Makelele for Chelsea. Xavi Alonso for Liverpool and Spain.
Hargreaves is never going to bring you a taste of Samba flair but he will bring you a disciplined performance and a high work ethic. How many of the squad can do that?
Tara's worse nightmare(James) could happen unless Robinson takes more command of his area. A great shot stopper but last night woefull in dealing with anything from the sides.
Why on earth were we placing a total non header of the ball marking the near post target man for the first goal? Plus Beckham was stood behind the Swedish player?
That position requires an aggresive header of the ball and someone who is not afraid to take a bang in doing so.
But hey 50 million of us would pick a totally different England team wouldn't we? That Sven what does he know? Pah! :P

You are of course right Peter :D
Every team does need a grafter, I agree I'm just not 100% he's it, and the newspaper which described him as the best play was The Sun, hardly the most credible of sources now is it.
As I said he had an average game and certainly didn't show himself up.

I think if (& the way they are playing it's a very big if) England manage to beat Ecuador (& if the other games follow a reasonable pattern with no upsets) then the following game would be against Holland - NOT A CHANCE IN HELL of winning if they don't improve every aspect of their game dramatically !!
Thanks for ignoring Portugal, we really appreciate it. :P Now now, there's no need to refresh some memories about a certain game... I believe it was some 6 years ago... when a crappy little team from the western europe coast taught the mighty England how to turn a game around... To this day I still believe David Seaman doesn't even know where the first goal came from. :P

oh for gods sake! you dont like people who laugh at you? ah never mind eh.
carrick, hargreaves, ledley king, jenas(altho probably more attacking but i'd put him ahead of parker), phil neville, anthony gardner, i think i'll stop there.

Don't mind people disagreeing at all, just wanted your opinion instead of a row of 'smileys'.
Take out those who are injured (I'd play King if fit) and those who aren't defensive midfielders from your list and who have you got left? Carrick is the closest but having watched him for 4 seasons I know he doesn't tackle anywhere near well enough to do the 'Makelele' role at International level. Great passer though.
Of course, playing an out and out defensive midfielder would mean dropping one of Beckham, Gerrard or Lampard. With Sven picking his best individuals ahead of his best team, that isn't going to happen.

p.s. why is supportin england such pain, they can't ever win comfortably it has to be such pain....why is that...or are we just crap wit delusions of grandure?
Yup... Sum it up in 2 words, "England expects". There's a bit of a presumption of success, it seems like when you lose you're shocked, but when you win? You don't seem to enjoy it as much, because it's taken for granted. There's an awful lot of England fans that'll be destroyed if you guys don't take home the trophy, but even getting into the next stage is a fair achievement, getting further should be a cause for celebration.
Try our approach- we expect to be last at absolutely everything, so when we even qualify it's a national celebration.
Peter Henry
21-06-06, 11:54 AM
I do agree with Northwind to some extent there are people who blow England's expectations to ridiculous levels. Much of that is down to pure ignorance of the football world in general. Like that old chestnut of the Premier League being the best in the world? Total nonsense.
There is though in balance absolutely nothing wrong with being whole heartedly behind your national team, but do that with an acceptance of their limitations. If that was done some of the vicious criticism of individual players might be less harsh? That can only be done by having a reasonable knowledge of the talent available to other countries and not by showing a passing interest and assuming an expert stance for 2 weeks every 4 years.
Being realistic will prevent much of the angst...try selecting any England squad member and slotting them in to say the Brazil team? Argentina? Holland? there aren't many are there? That sums it up really.
England for the quarter finals is a good result in my opinion. Anything beyond that is an exciting bonus. 8)

The Guardian rounded i up nicely with
90 min: Another red card! But... Graham Poll, who is a stupid *******, is not getting the final, we can tell you that for nothing. After fouling Kennedy, Simunic is booked for a second time. He walks... then comes back when he realises Poll isn't going to show red. Ho ho hoh dear.
Ha ha ha, Graham Poll is a complete clown.
Succinct and to the point. Solid coverage at the Guardian.
very good game, croatia v aussie. not the most technical granted but in the drawling words of alan hansen "it had everything. goals, saves, incidents, sendings off" (you can hear him saying it can't you?!) but very exciting.
graham poll? oh dear. he was doing so well up til then, i'd have said he had a chance of getting more games until his last mad few moments!! the other games he's reffereed he's been pretty good in upholding the FIFA directive without taking it too far
Not the tidiest game around but happy with the result! Not happy about the Croatian player getting 3 yellows before being sent though. The whole refereeing team needs a keel-haul for that one.

A side issue here,
Japan were an absolute delight to watch, particularly in the first half when they had decided on a hight tempo game in order to unsettle Brazil.
They passed the ball crisply, all players were comfortable on the ball and they all had bags of energy. (If you have not seen their goal yet, watch out for it, if it had been Brazil or Argentina you would be seeing it replayed every 5 minutes)
But what was a pleasure to see was their discipline, no arguing, no play acting just totally honest athletes doing their best to play within the laws of the game. They really were a pleasure to watch. This was made more evident when later sitting to watch a full replay of the Aussie vs Croatia game. Some of the antics used by Croatia were a disgrace. :?

Well, Graham "me, me, ME, look at ME" Poll certainly got his daily ambition of getting noticed well and truly sorted last night. Typically inept display. Glad he's screwed his own chances up.
Not that I hold grudges, you understand.
I just read that Viduka asked Poll how many cards he'd given to Simunic. you'd have thought that would have made check his book just in case he was wrong! if he'd sent him off 2 or 3 minutes later he'd have been forgiven i'm pretty sure of that.
but oh no. his mentality is "how can i be wrong. no point checking!"

The ridiculous thing is the refs these days write the number of the player booked on the card not in a separate notebook so, assuming he wrote the first one down, it was right there in front of him. His face was a picture, totally lost control. I thought he was going to cry. Funny because I was crying too, with laughter.
But like I say, not liking the man, I found it highly amusing and will be adopting a highly smug face should he ref at our place next season. I know it will bother him.

Beat Ecuador...
Then either Holland or Portugal
Then Maybe Brasil or Spain
Argentina in the final.
Easy.
Finally, Sven sees it a little more my way. To my mind this is more realistic:
England (probable): Robinson; Hargreaves, Ferdinand, Terry, A Cole; Beckham, Gerrard, Carrick, Lampard, J Cole; Rooney.
4-5-1 with Carrick in holding role allowing Lampard and Gerrard some freedom.
Hargreaves for Carragher I'm less sure about but it does give some touchline oomph. Ferdinand is a doubt, Campbell will come in if Rio is unfit.

At last the world cup tournament is to get underway properly. It's all cheers and tears from this point onwards. Ukraine are through but not the force they should be. Possibly the ugliest team to watch and play against also....Switzerland.

Jabba, perhaps you missed the sentiment in my post? I was referring to the backing of the under dogs and wishing them well. Jumping from England to Argentina aint no big gamble to my mind? :P
I tell you something that Argentina squad has got to be the ugliest I have ever seen! They even make Germany,(not well known normally in the beauty stakes apart from Claudia) look like a team of teen icons!
Good job those boys can play this game!
Near me, the place is flooded with Argies in their national colours every time they play. They are extremely proud of their team, which I guess is easy when you are favourites.

Nope!!! I just think that it's nice to see the best team should win because they deserve to*.
Sure, nice to see an upset or two during the the tournament but I know how I felt when England, who to my mind were the best team in 1990, lost to the Germans on penalties. It just seemed so unfair
*Except when the best team is Germany

Comfortable win.
However, I think they and their fans should be ashamed of their input into getting that Swede sent off. Despicable.

I wasn't watching, only seeing the result online as I'm stuck in the office. What happened there?

Fairly innocuous touchline tackle, German fell over.. Nothing harsh in the challenge, just a routine tackle.
Ref wasn't going to even whistle, but the German players badger him to blow-up, and demand the yellow card (the Swede's 2nd). Ref gives the card and Swede sent off.
Another German then pats the ref on the back as if to say "well done". Game over.
I don't think the Germans will consider that their finest moment of the tournament.
