I wasn't watching, only seeing the result online as I'm stuck in the office. What happened there?
Fairly innocuous touchline tackle, German fell over.. Nothing harsh in the challenge, just a routine tackle.
Ref wasn't going to even whistle, but the German players badger him to blow-up, and demand the yellow card (the Swede's 2nd). Ref gives the card and Swede sent off.
Another German then pats the ref on the back as if to say "well done". Game over.
I don't think the Germans will consider that their finest moment of the tournament.
Booo... :? Not a very bright moment, I must agree... :?

The Germans looked good...real good.
Sending off was a joke...bloody ref laughing in his face! But Sweden was dead and buried before that.
The ball from Henrik Larsson's penalty is still on radar and overflying Poland. :D

It's been officially confirmed that the ball is in orbit and has "docked" with the one hit by Japp Stamm..........

Well it's arrived then, win or lose no second chances. Can England do it against Ecuador who have caused an eye brow or two to be raised thus far?
I am expecting a non too amazing display with a host of hand over eyes moments, but Sven's boys to make it by the odd goal. What yer reckon?

I think England will win...but by chance rather than skill.
I think Ecuador have a few goals in them and this will be a very close run thing.

We were not pretty. We were not fluent. We were not tight at the back. Our keeper does not imbue confidance. Our glory boy central midfielder was again for me woefull. But.....
We are through!!!!!! :P :P :P :P :P
Miss Tara.....Forget those that unjustly hammer Owen Hargreaves, the most singular let down for England thus far has without a doubt been Lampard. Totally correct call.....leave him out.

Yeah we're through thats all that matters - but I thought Beckham played better this game not just because he scored but in general
philipMac

That was brutal stuff altogether.
Thank God for Ecuador is right. It was considerate of them to start furiously wasting time after Inkland got their goal. Did anyone mention it to them that if they lose this they are out?
As usual, the Guardian has it right with "I think Fifa should just declare Mexico the winner of this game and have them advance, as well as Argentina". Seriously dull stuff compared to yesterday.
And, why did Sven leave that poor bloke on throwing up all over the pitch for so long? Does England really not have a player better than Beckham completely wrecked, doubled up, wretching and puking all over the shop?
So who next Holland or Portugal?
Jelster
25-06-06, 06:04 PM
Let's take a serous look at today shall we ??
Right, a big minus, we were saved by the woodwork (thanks to Mr Cole for his input there). Other than that, Equador never really looked like scoring, only 1 other shot on target I thnk.
Joe Cole, somebody tell him that "simple also works"...
Lampard - shooting boots next game please mate....
Plus points:
Hargreaves had another pretty good game
Ashley Cole was pretty good
Carrick was excellent
Becks played a "Captains game", even though he wasn't on top form, he still put in 100% and pulled off another good goal
Oh yeah, and we won.....
.
Holland or Portugal
You better hope its Portugal or the Dutch will show you the door.

Doesn't quite work like that, Holland are a more reliable team but sometimes anyone can be beat by the underdog. Wouldn't necessary describe Portugal as the underdog but if you had to you would bet Holland to win.
To prove a point Holland have had a clear possession advantage yet at half time 1-0 to Portugal.
If Portugal hang on now with 10 men that doesn't mean they were the better team, just sometimes the game goes like that.
oh right. thanks for that

Glad the Dutch are going home they have to be the most cynical, nasty team I've seen in the world cup this time leaving the boot in, diving, moaning...
The boy who hit Ronaldo in the first half should have been off straight away...

There is not a goalkeeper on this earth that would have saved that free kick I assure you. Inches inside the post furthest away from the keeper, he did well even getting the tip of his glove to it. End of.
The Dutch are so often blessed with great individuals but they have always been flawed from squad to squad. The problem with them is that every player has an ego bigger than the importance of the collective goal and infighting in the dressing room is par for the course with them.
You could see it early on when one player takes a shot and is then berated by someone who thought he should have been passed to. Yeah anyone could be a little p*ssed at not receiving the pass, but it's the way the Dutch do it believe me.
The Portugese have been a top side for a few years now and able to replace players with very good new one's. Very solid at the back and with a good handful of flair players. They are also not scared of giving a bit of rough stuff if needed either.
That game was enthralling for so many reasons, it seemed that it was 3 hours long as there were so many incidents!
One thing is for sure, there is a lot more value in buying a ticket to watch Portugal than there is to watch a Madonna concert in London!

The Portugal-Holland game turned into a farce and ruined any chance for football.
Portugal next...hmmm...
Ecuador were very poor and England will get a sterner test against Portugal.
The goalkeeper was not at fault and it was just put in the right spot.
My dough is still on the Germans...momentum building there and play as a team.

Odd as it might seem, Germany have transformed themselves in to a side that play like a good England side does when on form. Where as, presently we are performing like the German teams of old who somehow always managed to get through.
I can't help feeling that we are going to be left with the feeling, " if only" we had delivered the kind of performance we are capable of? In the past we have risen to the challenge and failed but no one could question the effort applied.
With Sven constantly pasting over the cracks due to injuries and formation conundrums, will the real England ever be allowed to be released in this tournament?
Ah well at least we are still in it! :P
The Basket

I think England's performances have been very lacklustre against some poor opposition. I simply cannot believe that England can beat Portugal. They really have to improve by miles to even get a kick in that game. Portugese sending offs and yellow cards help though.
Germany V Argentina should be the game of the season. The Germans have been the most entertaining side. They have 2 excellent and understanding strikers in Podolski and Klose....Ballack passes the ball with pinpoint accuracy and plenty of width with Scwienstieger, Lahm and Schnieder. The defence looks weak and will let in plenty of goals too.
Love the Oliver Kahn running joke. The guy always looks like his cheese has slid of his cracker :D

Play like we have thus far and Basket could well be correct. However at long last we are playing a good team. A team that yes wants to prevent you from scoring, but they do not do it in a stifling manner.
I think,(read-hope) England will rise to the challenge and THIS could be one of the games of the tournament. 8)

i replied to your original moan about how lucky we/beckham was with the free kick and that anybody could have made the save. certainly anybody from your standard of football. the quote i put in was to try to highlight the arrogance of your statement, but seems you didn't see it.
i'm not making it personal, i was replying to your message, i think you'll find you started getting silly by implying i'm a ******, yes it is a debate and like you i'm entitled to an opinion, was i not supposed to reply back.
and finally, i'm pleased you follow all my posts so closely. if you think i make everything personal then that could just be my way. or it could be that i reply directly to people who reply to me? i dunno, i'd not given it much thought.
that is my last on the subject. despite what may appear to the contrary on this message, i really do have a lot more to worry about in my life than what you think about me. you won't be the last person i upset, its the way i am.

They've got to be seriously ****ed off when their kids come home asking for a Dutch team shirt.

Stevie G is the man. As long as he plays, England can still dream. Make him captain.
getting back to the matter in hand....
decco won't play, suspended
ronaldo in doubt with a gashed thigh
figo may not play, suspended.
(i believe figo will be suspended, altho there seems to be doubt on what his booking was for.the booking can't have been for the nut on matey, thats a red card offence surely? so i'd say it was for back chat or summat)
and there's another chappie who won't play cos of suspension. name escapes me.
we ain't playing well, but we're in the last 8 of the world cup. will portugals delapidation act as a spur to them, and give us false sense of expectation that we can beat them? dunno. its a squad game, i'm sure the players coming in will do a good job for them. we owe big phil one don't we? lets not get carried away on that thought. we owed him in euro 2004 after brasil beat us in the 2002 world cup, look what happened to THAT particular brand of revenge...
keithyd predicts a 2-1 victory. not pretty, but i reckon we'll do it.

Could be a great game - two different styles, both playing well. As long as England are still in then it's a case of ABA (Anyone but Argentina) for me.
I thought the Argies v Mexico was match of the tournament so far. Fantastic.
Didn't see the 2nd half yesterday - what was the reason for Becks "blowing chunks"?
dehydration apparently. said he felt a bit gruff before hand but didn't think much of it.
Did he stay on the pitch after having puked?
Did he stay on the pitch after having puked?
yeah but he was clearly struggling. carried on for a while, was substituted for about 5 to go by lennon - who incidently did really really well for the brief time he was on the pitch.

Jeez what a lousy game... :? Roughest thing I've seen in a while, really.
So basically we're left with pretty much every one yellow carded, two red cards and two players in doubt, and I'd say we're pretty much screwed up.
Just my take on the Figo affair, if he's booked for headbutting the other clown based on TV images (which he should have been right there and then), then there are lots of other yellow cards that should be lifted. The ref was clearly out of his mind, even Blatter (sp?) admited it, and ruined what could have been a hard but somewhat fair game. A red card for the Ronaldo "attacker" could have done wonders to keep things cool.
So. England next. :P

Well from the teams left in,if England are to fail in their bid then tbh I would love Portugal to win it. A lot of that is due to me following Figo's career for many years and being of the mind that he has been a great example to many.
His little "love tap" to the Dutch defender was so out of character I cannot tell you! However unfortunately for England Luis is clear to play! He can be controlled to a degree when he plays out wide these days, but if he decides to patrol inside.....watch out England. :?
agree with your post re figo peter to an extent, but (as im sure you'll agree) he's nowhere near the force he was in world football. from what i've seen this cup so far he seems tired and struggled to get into one or two games.
that said i am gutted he's playing saturday as he is a huge danger. but like you say keep him wide, give hargreaves a man to man marking job on him and he can be kept quiet.

First up today Brazil Vs. Ghana. Now that could be a very entertaining game. The African side will not roll over and play with a lot of energy which could just disrupt the Brazilians.....well for a while.
Then it's France Vs. España which could be a classic game. I hope that the Spanish squad have been ignoring what the press have been saying....that most of the French players have played their best football in the past. I think France are stinging from the criticism they have taken thus far and could be out to prove a point.
Watch out for Luis Aragones the Spanish coach, he always looks on the point of nodding off to sleep!
VIVA ESPAÑA!
no shocks in the world cup so far.
pretty much every game has gone to script.
either france or spain winning wouldn't be construed as a genuine shock.
brazil vs ghana however.......
thats all i'm saying.
Watch out for Luis Aragones the Spanish coach.....
Ah.....he of racist comment fame?
I'll be cheering for the French. Nothing personal, it's just that my fantasy league team will be stuffed on the transfer front if Spain win
Peter Henry
27-06-06, 09:37 AM
Jabba...Luis was unfortunately the victim of words spoken in spanish that had limited meaning, and those same words being taken up by the press of another nationality and a totally different swing put on them.
The word "negrito" means no more than "the black guy". That to me is not racist,(something I find disgusting)
Luis Aragones has in his squad the first ever black player to represent Spain, Senna. I do not see his inclusion as some kind of damage limitation exercise, he is there chosen by Luis on merit.
However I will add there is a disgraceful side to Spanish football that does see the shameful use of racist chants used at matches.

Australia 3-1 Japan
France 0-0 Switzerland
Italy 1-1 USA
Czech Republic 0-2 Ghana
France 1-1 South Korea
Switzerland 0-0 Ukraine (aet - Ukraine win 3-0 on penalties)
Those games dont much look like what we would expect, you should know by now a world cup never goes to script, until the final of course, which pretty much always has the 2 of the 6 biggest teams.
Poland 0-2 Ecuador - yep, reckon thats about the only one!
Australia 3-1 Japan - not a surprise in my book, neither are world beaters.
France 0-0 Switzerland - again not a real surprise as France failed to score in ANY game last time round
Italy 1-1 USA - USA ranked higher than Italy i believe
Czech Republic 0-2 Ghana - i did say "pretty much" every game
France 1-1 South Korea - see last comment about France, South Korea semi finalists last time round
Switzerland 0-0 Ukraine (aet - Ukraine win 3-0 on penalties) - nah, not having that one either!

Ronaldo breaks Gerd Muller's World Cup finals goalscoring record to give the defending champions the lead. Kaka puts Ronaldo in and the Real Madrid man mugs Richard Kingson with a trademark stepover and slots the ball home.
Game over?
if it aint they're making it hard for themselves
as a (crap) betting man, i'd say yes its over

2 - 0 at halftime. If it isn't over, it sure looks close to it.
I think the only way that Ghana will take on Brasil is by using the 'don't like it up 'em' approach.
Kick 'em 20 feet in t'air and see if they like it :D
Playing Ronaldo is a huge advantage to the other side.
10 men and a fat lad. :D
That fat lads not bad you know The world cups highest scorer now and he was pretty nimble.

Ok a win for Brazil but I can only suggest that their defensive frailties will have been noted by those a lot more knowledgeable than me. Quite frankly they have the worst heart to their defence that I have ever seeen and I can personally remember their teams back to 1970.
If a team like Ghana can pull their central defenders out of postion so easily, play wall passes metres from the edge of the Brazil penalty area and have so many clear cut scoring opportunities....then the good teams left in cannot be too concerned.
You think England have a suspect goalie? That Duda(in spanish that means doubt!) Very poor against anything in the air and so damned lucky to have that shot hit his foot in the first half.
All we got to do now is figure how to stop Il Fenomino from adding to his awesome record.
BTW Is Ronaldinho even at this tournament???
That Duda(in spanish that means doubt!)
Erm......his name's Dida
Lookin' forward to tonight's game - shame I'm going to have to watch it in the pub

Ghana made a huge mistake playing attacking football against Brasil...should have tried to kill the game and played the hard stuff. But fair play for the way they played.
Went down with guns blazing and all that.
Ronaldo is getting better with each game, not as bad as the first games.

Ah well it will be a quiet night here tonight with no car horns blaring all night. Well deserved win by France. Fancy Zizou being the one to hammer the final nail in the coffin!
Brazil Vs. France next round? Yummy!
Spain living up to what I expected, flattering to deceive all over again!

Great game and a good ref at last, no real yellows until the end just content to speak to the players rather than book them, kept the flow of the game going much better.
The French seem to be coming to their own and really might have a bet on them against Brazil. They snuffed out the creativity of the Spanish and grafted for the win.
Pity coz I thought the Spanish might actually win it as they have played the best consistant football in the whole world cup
H
That was def. one of the better games of late, a couple of yellow cards for which they were deserved. The quarters are looking to be great matches.
Jeez - what happened to Spain (again!)
Peter how are they taking it over there.
Has to be said that it was an emphatic win for France in the end.
Great final goal from Zizou but I do feel for Spain (again!)
