Yamaha TRX850 opinions? - SV650.org

anyone owned one, ridden one?

Very tempted to look out for one, fancy a new toy to play with.

They're excellent, a somewhat forgotten motorcycle that few people bought, but if you've been lucky enough to ride one that's hard to understand. Engine closely related to that of the contemporary TDM, (parallel twin with 270º crank), and it feels similarly leggy. Try one - I bet you'll like it. Then check the Over catalogue

The downsides are that it's a typical Yamaha of the era, warped discs, short lived shocks and general rot, but the upside is that they seem commonly to be owned by people who care for them rather more than the average motorcycle.

They are a tidy motorcycle. I used to ride with a guy who had one and it's not shy. Only had a quick spin on it myself but plenty of power (I accidentally spun the rear up leaving the car park), my only complaint was the seat was just a plank. That said now and again I find myself on eBay looking for a good example of one for some reason...

Stick some fruity pipes on it and it will out argue a Ducati. And a set of blue spots are popular mods to beef up the stopping power up front. I have a feeling that they may start going up in price over the next few years as they get rediscovered, plus PS ran a feature with one a month or so ago, so worth a read there.

Good morning all.

TRX 850's were a good bike in their day. Sadly, most ended up with a Dynojet kit, & race cans fitted. Dynojet kits are the quickest way to wear the carbs out known to man, (short of sticking a drill through the emulsion tube).
Hence a lot of TRX engines ended up getting a thorough internal washing. Shortening the engines life considerably.

High oil consumption was an issue on all many 5 valve Yamaha twins. I've seen a fair few with knackered crankshafts etc. Due to not checking the oil level often enough.

Rode one once. My impressions were, crap forks, only 5 gears, vibrated a lot. Lots of torque but not like the SV's revviness at all. Wasn't for me.
