Hi All,
I have recently bought a 1999 SV650S, cracking bike and its good to finally ride a curvy after owning a K3 SV650S. My problem is this, the bike has been running ok apart from the bit of tuning needed and it only has the very annoying cam chain rattle until this evening. All was well and i rode to the petrol station ok. When i got back on the bike to ride away i now noticed there is this knocking noise when setting off, not very nice and is worrying me. There has been no signs of anything going wrong it has literally just started. Now i do think that the bike is in need of a new clutch cable but surely this would explain the knocking. This only happens when actually moving, when stationary there is only the rattle. Can you guys think of anything i should check? Thanks, Si |

Chain adjustment and wheel bearings are the first things I would check. Also check the condition of your tyres, never know there might be something in there.
Can you be more specific about where the noise is coming from? |

Chain adjusted all ok?
Mine despite being adjusted had developed a tight spot and would clunk when setting off. It still made noise at higher speed but couldn't hear it as much due to the other road and bike noises etc

Hi guys,
Yeah the chain is adjusted fine and the tyres are practically new. The knocking feels like is coming from the engine somewhere and its hard to pin point it as it only happens when when the bike is moving. I'll check that everything is tight 2moz and i'll the from and rear wheels off to make sure all is well. Could knackered clutch plates cause a knocking noise if there were fubar? Just trying to think where and why this would happen. When i collected the bike, the spanner before me over filled the oil and i had to drain about 1ltr out because he filled the oil up on the side stand. The gears are a little clunky and when the bike is cold it can be difficult to shift. |

no chance of it being a cracked mudguard or hugger bouncing up and down - took me a month to figure out what the loud clacking noise was on my bike when i was going over speed bumps or pot holes. Thought suspension may have been on its way out or bodywork was fouling... Turned out the mudguard had somehow cracked and was loose..

Does it do it if you rev the engine from idle on a paddock stand in neutral? Can you hear it when idling in first gear on the paddock stand, maybe tell better where it's coming from?
Is it continuous or just once at clutch engagement? |
