But on top of the small errands, I do the odd couple-of-hours dart to friends at Uni, and the biggie is that I plan on going touring big time this summer, across Europe, and by the time I reach Dover I'd want to turn around if I were on the SV

You can get them with a fairing.
1200 engine can be tuned to high heaven if you're so inclined too.

That would fit the bill or a Fazer as they both have ample room for taller riders.
A 690 ktm may also be an idea at the seat heights are quite high.
