Push it on don't pull it, as you push it bulges so becomes larger and slides on. Same gig if you push it on too far, push it back again don't pull. Sounds daft i know!

Light spray of brake fluid cleaner, push on and ram it in with the palm of you hand, before it evaporates...job done.

HAIRSPRAY is best I recon, used it on motocross bikes bmx. Everytime never tried anything else. I bet spray paint works good too.

Any type of oil or soap I would avoid!

Well the majority suggested hairspray, but as I keep my hair short (we've evolved past the need for hair, if I'm cold I put a hat on) I don't have any. I do have an abundance of brake cleaner though.

So I tried brake cleaner. A little spray on the bar, and a lot down the tube and it slid straight on. Very easily. However it goes off and dries very quickly so there is not really and option to reposition if it goes wrong. But I had measured it before so had it in the correct position straightaway. It is also quite strong and feels like its a good permanent fix.

Thanks all for the suggestions.
