Default Fitting Exhaust Gaskets

What is the best way to fit exhaust gaskets? (The steel wool-type ones that fit in the cylinder heads). I've got a '00 curvy and the gaskets seem bigger than the ports...

Good morning.

Some pattern gaskets are somewhat oversize, but providing you have original gaskets the problem is most likely a little corrosion on the side of the ports themselves. You'll have to scrape it off.
Stick the new gaskets into place using a little instant gasket. This will help prevent dislodging them when fitting the exhaust.

Cheers.

The alternative to instant gasket is grease.

Steel wool? In cylinder head? Pretty sure they are little silver/brass things in head, the long steel wool things go in the downpipe

Nah, from memory the OEM head gaskets look like a highly compressed brillo pad and cost a fortune[1].

Other makes seem to either use a crushable copper ring or a fabric looking ring (probably ceramic fibre) with a steel inner and outer.

[1] £5 each IIRC.

Thanks guys, after lots of scraping it fitted perfectly. I think some sealant had been used previously and the "crust" that was left was blocking the new gasket.
