Yes having a van would be brilliant for loads of reasons, but if its going to cost a fortune, getting a trailer to lug bikes around is going to be more cost effective.

If space is an issue get one that can dismantled, I know Speedplay's got one of them Motolug trailers which fits in the boot of his Mondeo, probably about half the cost of a years van insurance & a standard trailer can be picked up for peanuts on EBAY.

At least a trailer can be sold on if you're not using it, unlike annual van insurance

Not got pots of money, but having my own van would be useful and if it turns out I don't use it enough I can just sell it on. I just don't want to spend a load of money on insurance as I see it as wasted money, at least a van has value at the end of a year. And I'm not talking about a brand new van so depreciation isn't really much of a concern to me.

I understand the point about the trailer, however I don't have a tow bar, or a car that would be able to pull it, and the biggest down side to a trailer is you can't sleep in the back of it.

So I phoned that insurance company and what they are offering is right up my street. No commuting and not my main transport. I can use it for things other than shifting a bike, taking a sofa to the tip for example, so long as I'm not a business and I'm not. The price is quite reasonable for the cover and for what I'd be using it for. So I'm going to start searching for a cheap (very cheap) van...

Car, van and bike. I wish I could get credit for multiple ownership as I cannot be using all 3 at the same time.

But I suppose

Car: Me, wife, daughter
Van: Me, daughter
Bike: Me

so yes they could all be on the road at the same time.

Caveat emptor, my rodent-seeking friend, old vans and other commercial vehicles often look as though Top Gear has been at them. If you've not had the pleaseure before, you'll be pretty surprised at what people are trying to sell for actual money.
