Jambo, are these photos WE have taken of ourselves, like Rob's one or using the timer setting?

jambo
04-09-12, 09:51 AM
The original rules of the photo comp were:
"4) All submitted photos must be member's own work, or be a photo with yourself in the photo."

I think what I'd feel is that timers were fine, if another person held the camera, rather than using a tripod that would be fine too. If someone else turned up, set up the camera and a bunch of lights for you (so you submitted a model shot done by a pro or advanced amateur) then that would feel pretty unsporting for this month's comp.

I wasn't sure if this would be a very busy, inclusive theme, or if everyone would run from it. Looks like people are getting stuck in, which is cool!

Mine was a timed pic...done in the usual fashion of balancing the camera precariously on a wall, hope that's still in keeping with the rules :-P

Thanks Brett

I almost used this one, showing how we are all the same in the end - kinda on level ground - but it didn't work without the one below it... (these graves were almost side by side)

I wanted something that gave people a bit of scope to interpret their view of what religion and faith means, without having to actually believe in any of it. If you watch the TV or visit any shops at the moment you could well think that our Christian festival to celebrate the birth of Jesus is actually an excuse to buy loads of useless tat and stuff ourselves with calories. What exactly has a remote controlled inflatable R2D2 got to do with Jesus Christ I wonder?

Richie

R2D2 and Jesus are from different religious groups, Christian and Jedi.

Yeah it's beautiful there. We had a great time travelling round Thailand and visited Sukothai for a wedding in nearby Phitsanulok. The local monks were all at the wedding and chanted for hours on end with such consentration and dedication. Really amazing.
Shame out trip ended so badly though. We were in Phuket on boxing day when the tsunami struck. We were lucky in that all of our group were unharmed but thousands lost there lives just in the bay we were staying in (patong beach). Our hotel was pretty much levelled too.

I only have a passing interest in photography really, I'll try and capture shots on days out or holidays etc so please don't laugh at my questions! What is HDR and how do I go about having a go at it?

jambo
06-12-12, 01:53 PM
HDR is "High Dynamic Range"
The basic premise is that digital cameras can't capture a particularly large range of light & dark (certainly less than your eye can). This is why you often have the sky blown out to pure white if it's brighter than the subject, or the foreground goes to black if it's darker.

In HDR you take a series of photos from exactly the same position some very dark, some very bright, and merge them together to get detail everywhere. Sometimes it looks quite natural, sometimes it looks very sci-fi.

I can't do it so I choose to pretend it isn't real photography (which of course it is). :D

Jambo

dirtyred619
06-12-12, 01:59 PM
I was guessing it was something like that and I'm probably in the same boat as you in not being able to do it, but I think I fancy a try.

I'm presuming I'll need a fairly decent camera, tripod and a suitable program to work the magic?

As great as the photo is...

HDR = several shots put together using computer skills.

1) I thought the rules were one photo per entry? not 20 layered on top of each other. ;-)
2) No photoshopping allowed or it turns into a photoshop competition and not a photography competition.

Me? A Humbug?

The rules of the photocomp are quite clear:
http://forums.sv650.org/showthread.php?t=144708
"5) Photos must be genuine, If you Photoshop your entry tell us what you did (IE Crop / adjusted brightens etc)."

You can process it to hell and back if you want, but people may well choose to vote for another entry they feel is more "authentic" if that's what they want.

I hate Instagram. Just seems like lots of silly special effects to make an average photo look more interesting and makes people lazy.

I do use Photoshop to a minimum. Cropping, a bit of curves and today I 'healing brushed' a portrait of a colleague as she had to have the photo taken today but has had a few heavy nights so the eye bags were removed. Very subtle stuff.

If everyone is in agreement we could use standard photo competition rules re editing. I will cut and paste them here later for opinions.

Brettus
07-12-12, 09:46 AM
Hmm, this throws a lot into question. I won a couple of months ago on a clearly photoshopped multiple exposure. that is a step beyond HDR but I (personally) consider HDR to be the same picture, it is just given more range.

The people still vote so if the people don't like and over done HDR shot then they won't vote for it right? we are still the voters.

I'm all for levelling the playing field and making things inclusive for everyone but I'm not decided on if rules are the way to do it.

This post is just my opinion for consideration, I'm not saying this is what I think and this should be the way its done etc.

Sir Trev
07-12-12, 09:52 AM
I like to see the different types of pic personally, so have no problems. As long as folks are up front about it.

We don't all have the equipment to produce them (oo-er) but I don't want to stop the creativity of those that do. Plus this is meant to be a bit of fun for days when we're not out on the bikes, not a rigidly enforced strict competition.

Littlepeahead
07-12-12, 11:10 AM
Just for interest, these are the standard guidelines we use in our competition which are about the same as everyone else's.

Adjusting your image: The faithful representation of what was captured at the time of the shot being taken must be maintained.

Digital adjustments are only acceptable if limited to minor cleaning work (removing dust spots), levels, curves, colour, saturation and contrast work. Sharpening and minimal cropping is allowed.

Compositing, sandwich shots and double exposures are not permitted. Adding or removing distractions, items, people etc into/from the image is not allowed. Pictures that have been digitally manipulated in breach of these rules are not eligible.

mister c
07-12-12, 06:38 PM
I agree with Trev & Brett. Its a bit of fun, no prizes are going to be won, just people voting on other peoples attempts at a hobby. I'll also be honest & say that the photo comp is about the only thing keeping me on the forum these days

+1 Agreed, as only one image is entered and you clearly state in the wright up of the photo what you did and it's your own work or you are in the photo then it is an entry.

multiple entry's are not allowed, multi layered of the same image are.
now lets stop ](*,) and carry on.

It's a roman figure, Totally U-rated :0) and it 's an entry.

wasn't he a minor rustic fertility god, protector of livestock, fruit plants, gardens and male genitalia. I thought that Priapus was marked by his absurdly oversized, permanent hard on, which gave rise to the medical term priapism. I believe he became a popular figure in Roman erotic art and Latin literature, and is the subject of the often humorously obscene collection of verse called the Priapeia.

of course this information came from somewhere else :0)

Ooh interesting topic Keith!

Hmmmm... Going to have to find and read the instruction book from my compact and see what it can do. Fairly sure I can make panoramas but may be limited in other effects, plus I only have the Canon software to play with.

Ideally this is the straw that tips the balance to make me get that EOS650 I've been looking at but with finances as they are I will have a go with the SX130 first. It'll be a nice challenge.

These photo threads have got me enjoying my camera again!

Thats one hell of a filter set - it probably started out as a photo like http://teppei-art.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/george-turner.html ;)
