Yeah the problem I have with light painting is there is some artistic skill needed and I have none. I can manage to whip some wire wool about on a chain but geometric stuff is my limit (and a little air writing, once I've had 4 goes to work out how to write backwards)
PS thanks for the votes guys! Just seen the thread, I'll have your next mission (should you choose to accept it) up very shortly.

Having seen Mr L Pants' entry for the March compo I had a lookie in the menus on my phone. Blow me - there's a panorama setting on the Galaxy Ace as well. Never realised. Takes up to 8 shots. Now have a blurry panorama of my study as a trial run but cannot find the right cable to upload it to the 'puter... Will take some more while out walking the mutt tomorrow. I know my Canon came with a pany-sticher so I'll try them both back-to-back as a test. A fun challenge - hurrah!

Hah yeah, it's hard to remember to adjust your perspective when you look at panoramics, that'd be awesome though, a full tubular tight corner :-)

You have nothing to lose by posting now, you can always change your entry before the vote if you capture a better one later in the Month but I gotta say, I really like that one, I'm impressed at the detail it's picked up in the darker areas.
Nice.

I had a laugh taking some pannies today in London. I decided to walk up the eight million steps to the top of the Monument (to the Great Fire of London) but was disapointed to find mesh in the way. Could just get the lens through for individual shots but it ruined the intended purpose. Nice views and worth the walk however.
Had more luck on the way to Monument though. As it was Sunday morning Waterloo Bridge was almost empty so I stopped off there to try. Trouble is you can go almost 180 degrees from there so my entry is rather w-i-d-e to say the least. Could have chopped it but there were so many iconic buildings on both sides I could not resist cramming it full. Needed patience though as people just walk in front of you even when the rest of the pavement is empty (grrrrr) and on some of the attempts I got half a vehicle in shot when it stitched together.
As I said, a good laugh and in the end it was worth the effort, even if it was a bit hazy and the light was not perfect.

I think photobucket (or other free hosting) didn't do some entries justice this month, (Notably Trev's as it has SO much in it) because of the pixel limitation (1024 wide I think)
Some cracking entries though and quite a few went out to take some just for this which is what I'd hoped for.
Just an aside on the voting thought process, being completely honest, does anyone else here skew their opinion a little?
Basically what got me thinking it is if all things were equal my favourite shot this month is LPH's its nicely proportioned, perfectly exposed and has vibrant colours which appeal to me personally.... BUT, I *KNOW* how capable she is so I'd mentally handicapped her (sorry that's an awful turn of phrase but what I mean is in my head I'd weighted her entry back a little (no disrespect intended LPH by doing this, quite the opposite!)) I just wondered if others do this with the more accomplished entrants (consciously or not perhaps now you think about it)
I hasten to add that it doesn't mean I won't vote for LPH (or any other advanced photographer) it just means they have to work harder for it.
Just wondering how others think of this and if I'm "wrong" in this then I'll change my thinking, I just wondered how others think.

That explains why it came out a biy fuzzy - thanks for that Brettus.
As to the vote-off nominations - I'd never considered favouring or dis-favouring (is that a word?) based on kit or ability. LPH's panorama was I agree really nice and I too loved the colour and clarity but my votes always go to the pic that I like, not the snapper.

Welcome back G!
Cracking photo!
Good to be back, it's been a while, work took over my life for a period of time, and life can throw some funny twists with my fiance having a stroke at 28. Back now, with a new bike on order that should be delivered next week :P
Was a hell of a day that photo... so many inexperienced people on a mountain, got a few photos from the day I could have used.
Helicopter was not for us, although it stopped on the ledge next of us to check we were ok because my fiance matched the description of someone else they were looking for.
We class ourselves as a healthy couple and reasonably experience walkers / outdoor people and still nearly got caught out for food and water, the weather changed from clear to not being able to see 2m infront of you continously throughout the day, the majority of people we saw on the mountain that day could be described as tourists and were being lifted off the mountain all day.

I only just saw this Brettus. Made me chuckle. I've never had any training, I have an O level in cookery but nothing in photography. I'm currently studying a City and Guilds but that is mostly Photoshop which I don't use for photo entries on here other than a bit of cropping. My main investment is the two L series lenses which I bought to use mostly at work but paid for myself as I like to own my own kit.
This month's entry I will admit I took about 6 years ago, when I only had basic kit, but I just love the little elephant and you can see his mum was keeping a very close eye on me getting near her baby.

Some amazing pictures! Only gutting thing about mine was that an hour after taking that, my friend and I witnessed three wolves chasing and splitting a herd of Elk and taking one down. So wish I could have got pictures of that!
I hear ya! All this month the mother bear has been teaching her cub to fish for salmon in our creek! But do you think I could get them on camera? Only having a point and shoot, I've had quite a few close calls this month trying to get close enough to bears to get a good shot. You're supposed to walk round making noise, not sneaking up on them! One day left to get the shot...
Oh, and I've met 22 bears this month! B-)

Zoologically speaking birds are vertebrates, vertebrates are members of the phylum Chordata which is a division of the animal kingdom. Birds are very definitely animals!

This was a couple of years before the Bison shot. This Grizzly mum had the large cub you can kind of see and a smaller cub as well. I tried and tried to get a picture, but little one was having nine of it. In the end I had to use the bideo camera and there is some amazing footage of them playing alongside the RV...at one point, I had the camera and my head just peeking out of the window looking down on them and if I had put my arm out, I could have touched the mum...suffice to say, I didn't :-s
I thought it was quite unusual for mum not to have sent the older cub away.
Best thing was, we only saw them because we were stuck in a bear jam in Yellowstone and everyone else was looking at a black bear on the other side of the road...me being me decided that after seeing that bear, I would look the other way and see if I could spot any weird insects or anything. Within moments of moving to that side of the RV, i saw them coming towards us :-)
Shame I couldn't find the picture of the Tarantula crawling over my foot in AZ.

Richie: this is obviously personal opinion but how about desaturating the background but leaving some colour in it, this should highlight the subject without making it look "detached" from the scene. I might be wrong when it is actually done, just a thought I had.
desaturate the whole image apart from the guitar you mean, or blur the background?
Brettus
02-07-13, 10:36 AM
the background that you have removed all colour from, just undo that a little bit, so that there is still SOME colour in it but not as much as the guy and his guitar, just like you have now, I'd imagine its just a slider on the layer you've already applied?
I might be completely off on it but to me the difference between no colour and quite a vibrant guy is a little jarring, but maybe that is the charm of the image. I'm just speculating.
Like this?

Brettus
02-07-13, 11:09 AM
Sort of, I was imagining the guy having as much saturation as your submission but the background being close to what you just posted but perhaps a smidgen more colour.
So from your original submission I assume you've kept the PSD file with the mask to desaturate? can you not just tone that back so it has 20-30% saturation rather than 0% or perhaps I've misunderstood how you've done it.
Brettus
02-07-13, 11:37 AM
Had a quick play, only with JPG from the desaturated one so your results will look better but this is what I was meaning but not describing very well:
http://grab.by/o5JG (hmm, seems it doesn't like pointing to a tinygrab picture)

anyway, its just to get the idea across, it might still be a bad/unpopular one.

Holy crap at the tsunami shot, the days following that must have been some experience, and not a good one!
Spent 24 hours in the forest on the high ground we fled to from the hotel(which was beach front). Had just the clothes on our backs initially until some brave folk ventured into the wrecked buildings to scavenge supplies.
Got some snaps of that and the aftermath once we ventured back down to sea level. Not good but makes you realise how lucky we were. Our group of nine all came home. Around 5000 didn't just from the patong area alone.

Well he is the laziest dog that I know. He sleeps in until about midday and then will just get up to go out for a wee.
He is clever and knows how to talk (he says "I want one" when you ask him if he wants a treat). He knows the sound of mine and my Dads motorbikes and will go to the gate when he hears us coming.
He is very soft with the people he knows but is also very protective of them.
He is brilliant with my 18 month old Nephew and has been since he was a new born. He will tolerate being cuddled and having his nose and bum wiped by him (don't ask).
He also won't touch food until he is told to do so.

(Which isn't from myself)
Thanks my little shutter bugs. Thought i'd throw in an interesting topic this month.
This can cover all manner of urban decay, whether a rusty car, a pothole, to a demolished building. Let your imaginations run wild :)

I've got a couple I'm thinking of using, but I'm gonna try and get out also and take some shots especially.

Luckypants would be able to tell you better than me Brett, he took us past there on a run out a few years back. I took my daughter round the Elan Valley & took that pic. Just checked on Google & it's Cwmystwyth, post code SY23 4AG. It looks like an old Slate works

Brett it is Cwm Ystwyth, the road that runs from Devil's Bridge to Rhayader accross the top of the Elan Valley. It is an old lead mine.

Ah! Was that the place the rest of you had to wait for me while Admin saved me from myself with my ill conceived notions of spannering? I'd got a dodgy connection to my battery :-(
Shortly after seeing a posh ice blue Ferrari up there on the day I'm thinking of.

Yes indeedy, the posh blue Ferrari reminded me! I think I was on a DRZ that day? But indeed that is the road, Cwm Ystwyth mines even have a Wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cwmystwyth_Mines

A lot of the decay around here has been cleared away so you have to really hunt for it. Sites that may have been promising tend to get snapped up by developers and pulled down to build yet more flats. Will see if the weather is up to anything this weekend and try my luck.
Looking forward to trying out my new lens :)
just bought myself a Sigma 10-20 ultra wide lens

Found one of the last of the old independent furniture factories left in the centre of Wycombe. Fascinating place, held up by scaffolds and props, with the obligatory self-seeded buddleia all over the place. Hope it's saved as there used to be loads of these little businesses churning out chairs using beech from the nearby woods.
Where is this place Trev? The big place near bellfield road has been pulled down now I think so it's not there.
They also made Mosquitos in High Wycombe.

The Bellfield Road site you're thinking of was Parker Knoll, which I can just about remember as a tatty derelict place when we first moved to Wycombe 18 years ago. The site was flattened and became Safeway, since rebranded Morrisons.
The factory in my Urban Decay entry is on East Richardson Street, behind the shops on Desborough Road. It has been altered several times from looks of things, the white paint on an "external" wall, several old roofline marks. The front is now held up by props and there is strapping above to stop the brickwork falling apart. I could have squeezed past the barriers to get closer but it really does not look very safe. Shame, as we've lost so much of the industrial heritage of the town - building the new Sainsbury's lost us several sites and little old warehouses of this era.
You're right about the part the furniture workers played in the war to make some of the earlier planes. Parts for the Mosquito and the Tiger Moth were made in Wycombe and I seem to recall there is an info board about the links to De Havilland in one of the two Weatherspoon pubs we have in town. The early planes were made from wood so the furniture skills were very useful.
While in history mode, the Broom and Wade works that normally made compressors and air tools was used to make tanks. I worked at the site for a year (dreadful boss so did not stay) but alas, like so many others, it is there no more.

Good info, thanks.
The building by the railway station was going to be demolished but someone realised that it was build by Brunel.
Oh, don't suppose you remember the chequers, on the corner near the pepperpot (and antelope pub), facing the church near the entrance to the octagon? I friend of the family tried hard to save it and all the 17th century graffiti but list that battle.
I was offered a job by Parker knoll (oh, might have been ercol actually) but turned it down because I'd got the highest marks anyone had got in the tests. Whilst I'm confident of my abilities I know I'm not anything special.

The building by the station is the original broad gauge station.
Don't recall the Chequers but it may well be in a book of old Wycombe pubs we've got somewhere in the bookcase.
Ercol were just off the A40 to the East of HW. I remember going into their showroom once but being dismayed at the prices which were out of my reach as a newly employed graduate.
I like caerphilly castle! it's lovely there!
I'm going to dig out some of the photos I have of a few castles I have and see if any are worthy! :)

Will a selfie count?
Assuming that's your surname, I'd say yes.
However, you'll likely be needing a fit bird or two in the family if you plan on winning this month's competition. ;)

Oh you swine Mister_C, I'd been aiming to go there for my star trails shot (possibly with a little light painting) I'll still go there one clear evening but I'm gonna pick another for the competition now :D
Nice shot BTW!
My aim for the year is to only enter the photo competition when I've taken a shot FOR the competition, to try and get me out more with the camera.
Some cracking entries already in the first one of the year!

Sorry about that ;)
It would be a cracking place for star trails. I need to read up & practice mine one evening if we get a clear night. I've got an idea of where, just worried about standing in Crewe town centre for a couple of hours one night, I'll probably end up getting mugged lol

Wont there be too much light pollution there?
Or have the bulbs been nicked (pikeys ) or broken ( chavs )?
