Well done for salvaging a good weekend from one that looked to be heading down the pan sat morning. Great turn out from the pit crew too.

I still say spend not a penny more on it, sell it and get a competitive bike for next year but you know that so I'll change the record.

I was first loser 5 times and had an insight into what it might be like if deathrace2000 ever became a reality thanks to the first lap of the match race so a good experience to end the season on. See you all at the EF practice day in march.
P.s well done Carl for remembering my old man from the 90's, that confused the old git.
P.p.s Paragraph spacings just for you Toby, save on the migraine tablets.

Good to see no change in the attitude :D

... Just been down the road at about one hundred miles an hour, knacked the leathers, boots, gloves, newly sprayed bike and my only good orange tee shirt and we still can't get the work done for laughing! :)

Club racing is great! :)

Gordon, you're a wise old (relatively speaking) Owl. Having surveyed the (lighter than expected) damage this morning, I've decided to sell the lot and buy your bike! :)

How much do you want for it? :D

I think thats the plan. Split the two Sv's in the garage and sell them with all the spares (unless someone wants it whole. All it needs is a front number board or a hornet nose fairing and a can and its ready to go.) and buy a spanker for next season. Maybe even be the first Gladis (sic) on the grid! :)

Time to get (a tiny bit more) serious!

North east won the match races :-)

Doesn't need to be anymore serious until you get on track and only you can decide how serious you want to make that. All the good stuff you enjoy now stays the same.

Buying race bikes is a leap in the dark but try and get one with some history as a front running bike won't be any faster but is a bit more likely to have been looked after ie oil changes, valve clearances etc. No guarantee though. Happy hunting.

I found out during the race weekend that a guy I was really trying to stay with in an earlier weekend "may" (or may not - legal stuff) have been running a 750cc Sv. ;) Quite a few others "might" have been too. The things you find out when a drunk Mechanic staggers by :)

So despite giving away a 5 stone advantage and running a sickly Bucket AND giving away a 100cc advantage, I was on his pace... on knackered scrubs!

Looking back at some videos its very obvious.

I'm chuffed with that :)

No Names or numbers please, for those who were in the conversation.

ah, the joys of the racing paddock. This kind of crap goes on all the time, I chose to ignore it. Most of it is rumours and should be ignored.

I have raced against riders who have been accused of illegal mods that I know and trust. One bike in particular I know for sure was running a stock standard motor as it came from my own garage, in the hands of this rider though the bike was considerably faster.

There are some extremely talented riders out there who will always be targets for mudslinging. There are also people who choose to cheat at this game, its just part of the game that we are in.

Berlin
14-10-10, 09:50 AM
I wasn't sure it was "the done thing" to mention this kind of stuff being a newbie in the paddock.

But when its the bloke that actually fitted the big bore kit that tells you about it, then Its pretty much taken that he's done it :) Especially with the background info that I can't mention on here.

I can't understand this mentality. Why cheat? They're only cheating themselves. The fun is doing it with the same gear as everyone else.

he says, ordering an 850 big bore kit! :D

C

flymo
14-10-10, 09:57 AM
exactly, I mean why not just roll up with an R1 sporting SV650 badges. You'll get to know the ones who do cheat, usually they keep this sort of thing to themselves though. There are plenty of people who will say they have made illegal mods just to pi$$ you off and play with your mind a little. It can just be part of the racing banter that goes on.

We recently had the annual whinge about how we should allow these mods to take place on the basis that the class cant be properly policed anyway. It defeats the object though and ruins the concept of a cheap affordable (relative I know) racing. If you want to ride a missile then there are plenty of other classes providing higher bike spec regulations to cover this, the problem is then that the whinger in question simply has a higher bar to reach against equally talented riders.

Luckily our race club has not dropped its intent to run the class in the spirit that it was intended.

It goes on everywhere from the bottom levels of club racing up to Motogp and more recently F1. Human nature I'm afraid.

Berlin

Something else I noticed this season is how similar racing an Sv is to racing a 350LC. 3000 rpm wide power band and lots of gear stirring.

That surprised me as it's not how you'd imagine a twin to be.

Just my 2p as a none racer.

Having spent a bit of time in the paddock with Carl this season and after meeting the likes of Mad Tony, Gordon and his crew, Gavin etc etc I am absolutely itching to get into minitwins. If the money was there I'd be on the grid next season and figure it out as I go along!

The thing that attracts me to minitwins is how relativly easy and cheap it is to get into. You've got the likes of Mad Tony on his naked SV with standard suspension all over the back of people with nice shiny bikes (not that your bike isn't nice and shiny Tony).

Technically all I would need to do to my bike to get it into the class is rip some plastics off, stick a belly pan on and do a bit of lockwiring. And this is why I think the minitwins are good. I wouldn't have the same enthusiasm to get into it if it was a case of "who can chuck the most money at their bike wins", as flymo said, there is other classes for that like the premiers and the 600s.

I think it would be a really bad move for all clubs to allow modifications to get round the cheating. Very few people choose to cheat and those people are obviously in it for the wrong reasons. The rules should not be adapted to accomodate these people. Let them cheat, the people who are in it for the fun of racing will just get on with it regardless.

See you on the grid in a couple of years if all goes to plan!

Back to my hole now

You don't need to be a genius to figure it out. Look at the 'Improvement' in some riders lap times suddenly, in mid-season at a track they've already visited 3 times that year and barely made half a second. 3 seconds!?!? Mmmm....

Berlin
14-10-10, 11:55 AM
Erm, I did that, but it was a change of gearing! Toby made me do it! He in insited. I just wanted to drink beer but oh no, he went and made me put the 15 tooth sprocket on!

Its not even a sexy lightweight sprocket! Its a big fat heavy steel one and it hasn't even got any holes in it!

That, and take the tape off the air box and go up 3 sizes of jets.

Gordon, just thought I'd say that at the weekend just gone, 3 or 4 different people said words to the effect of "That Gordon's smooth as silk isn't he".

It's right like, you seem to be able to hold identical lines each lap, very consistent lap times from race to race, looks totally effortless. Only thing that bugs me is that your helmets the wrong colour orange!

The very first race I started in, I was still doing bloody lifesaver looks over my shoulder before I turned in! lol

It was one of these races where your grid position was determined by picking a lolly stick out of a hat, on it was a number. So there I was sat in grid slot number 2 on the front row in my neat little orange vest, still had the creases in. Holy crap did I get a shock when the lights went out!

If you think he is cheating either stump up the cash yourself or get the paddock to stump up the cash, complain to the organisers and get the engine stripped and checked.

Normally the threat of this happening is enough to encourage the cheaters to go away and come back with a legit bike as they wont allow the engine to be stripped.

Berlin
14-10-10, 04:29 PM
Harry, Doesn't bother me one way or the tother. In fact in this case I'm pleased I found out because he towed me along making my times better. :)

If I were up the pointy end and fighting for pride/cash/championships it may be different but if I let it bother me in mid pack then I'm thinking about your racing the wrong way. Its about the craic and the whole weekend not whether some dodgy geezer decides he needs a few more CC's or different cams.

Well, Its happening :)

Lightning the Wonderbucket is going on the road :)

Tomorrow, I'm going to merge the best of the two bikes into one and it'll be on the road as quick as you can say "Go Compare"! :)

In its new guise the Bucket will change to a T reg from a 03 reg as the frame and yokes are better, but the Voodoo forks and Penske will make their way across along with the engine, air box, rear sets and what's left of the exhaust from the original bucket. It'll be getting an entirely different Swing arm and...

... Yet another paint job.

However, Just like his name sake Wonderwoman, a quick twirl and some hormone replacement therapy and it'll be back as a race bike in the blink of a folded contact lense!

It'll be the Combo Bucket :)

Gordon,
I'm standing here looking at a whole mountain of work and you know what? I'm really going to enjoy it.

I like the faffing round and making things fit.

The Bucket project was as much about seeing what the Bucket (and I) could achieve on less than a shoestring and I'm feeling guilty about not finishing the challenge.

I've got two bikes here that could be made into a seriously competitive bike and a whole winter to go at it. I can work in my van on the evenings and a garage on weekends. I want to see what would be possible if its done right.

Everything we did this summer was make do and mend. Bosh this up, tape that up. A real "Rush job" for everything. I'd like to do it properly and turn the Bucket out onto the grid for everyone to say "WOW"!

I've got all the bits I need to do it and I have the time and motivation. I even own the tools! ;)

This thread has had over 15,600 views now and so a lot of people are interested in this and if I quit now I'd feel like I've let them down. Maybe they don't care? Maybe its the same 4 people viewing this over and over again? I dunno.

But I do know anyone can go out and *buy* a fast bike and be competitive. Not every one can build one and then do the same. As an underdog, on an old, clapped out bike.

So over the winter I'm going to do it properly. New faring, engine strip and rebuild, new rings and maybe pistons and a rebore. A lighter fly wheel and some Pointy cams. All legal and above board.

Then, come next Spring, I'll be 2 stone lighter, with a bike I know is as good as it'll ever be with a fire in my (smaller and beautifully toned) belly for a 1.05 on an old classic. (and a bit of voodoo!)

If Maxx can do it on his Curvy, why can't the Bucket? I'm never going to win a minitwin race (unless everyone in front falls off in an unfortunate mass accident) but we can be farting around in mid pack having a great time and knowing that we're doing the absolute best we can.

and this time... it'll have a horn! :)

I'm no a racer, far from it tbh, but I love playing with things and making them my self, and them being mine, cause you can look at it and go "yeah i did that"
I personally find it so nice to see someone who's about having a laugh and fun, and having read your race reports, I want a bit lol

I do know a few racers, and i can see peoples' point about it being cheaper and stuff, to buy a fast bike already, but I personally like the idea of building my own, and it's clear to see you do too.
So all I'm gonna say is. . . Keep up all the hard work, and continue having a laugh and fun, I really enjoy this thread and your reports, and look forward to more.

Eh? So you could run at the front but there's no fun in that so you'll build a bike full of excuses and ride mid-pack instead? Talks cheap mate. If you think you can run up the front, get a bike sorted and get up there. ;-)

Berlin
16-10-10, 03:17 PM
Gordon. I could run at the front by buying a bike but it wouldn't be anywhere as much fun as running mid pack (and continually getting quicker) on a bike I built myself. Continually improving it 'till its reached its limit.

It all depends on what you set out to achieve when you get in the van on Friday night.

A fart around and half a second quicker than last time and as much fun as possible between Friday and Sunday. Thats whats it's about for me.

Its the journey, not the destination! :)

... and if I ever catch you on the Bucket?? ;)

You say you could run at the front. Prove it. And don't say you've nothing to prove because if ever there was a sport where you have to prove yourself it's racing otherwise we'd all stay in the bar and tell each other how good we are wouldn't we?
Looking forward to April already! ;-)

Berlin
16-10-10, 06:35 PM
I humbly disagree, I'm in it for the craic and to test the limits of me and the bucket. I don't care if I never win as long as I've done the best I can with what I've got.

This may sound strange but having already won the World championship in something, the closer I got to the top the less I enjoyed it. Yes, the moment of glory was fantastic and I was the best in the world but where to then? I now can't stand what I used to do. It utterly killed my passion. It all passed too quickly the last time so this time I'm doing it differently.

I'm going to savour the journey, enjoy every second of the improvement and have as many laughts as its possible to have along the way. The only person thats important in the race is the guy I happen to be dicing with a that moment and hopefully, over the season, Its the guy in front of the guy in front, each time. I don't care if I never reach a 1.05. It'd be nice but It's not the be all and end all. maybe in 5 years time it will be but not now. I'll fall off a lot, drink too much, and waste a lot of money. But it'll be a hell of a ride :)

Anyway, on with the update :) It was all going so well this afternoon then Mad Tony showed up and we sort of got chatting and laughing and clarting about and the pace dwindled a little... well, a lot.

We finally got the Engine out of the Combo bucket and tony tested its speed...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin/Today3.jpg

That drive is going to be a nightmare to clean :D

So with the engine finally out we could claim to be down to a Rolling chassis. Admittedly not the one we were supposed to have but it was good enough to have another cup of tea. And another and we ended up chatting till the light went so I'll be back at it in the morning and hopefully get as much done as possible before Buggerlugs come back again! :)

... Famous twice at the same time! :) I won the championship and fell off a pier. (http://www.flyforums.co.uk/general-fly-fishing-discussion/13012-berlin-carl-hutchinson.html)

and I came second last year because I didn't do a single seconds practice. (http://www.gamefair.co.uk/show-areas/major-show-area/14735607/fishing/championships-and-competitions/) I was winning after three casts and he got a lucky gust of wind and pipped me by 6". and walked away with a grand :) Sh8T happens.

I couldn't do it this year as I was on the test day at Croft :)

That forums far too nice. If you posted here that you'd fallen off a pier I'd post words to the effect of "you f*&kin tool". :)

Just wait till you are "Pier Plunge Man" I'll be there to poke you with a stick.

and you have to love the BBC, if I'd "Climbed over" I wouldn't have "plunged"!
Its only "falling over" that leads to "plunging".! :)

Anyway, thats enough of that.

So, here we are at 1pm Sunday and thats it. Its stripped! Whist everyone else is having Sunday Lunch, I'm fettling bolts with grinders (quite a few!) and its now down to bare bones!

Next on the list is to diesel clean the frame and get it nice and clean then start swapping the best bits off the old bike onto this base.

First job is to clean up the bottom yoke and spray it, then grease the bearings and get the headstock back in. Then foks in and handlebars.

At the Rear end it'll be getting a new Swinging arm with nice clean bearings and the penske.

Hopefully by close of play tonight it's all on including the rear sets.

Fingers crossed...

So where the hell did that afternoon go?

7 hours it took to get from a bare frame to a clean bare frame to the parts off the old bike and across to the new bike. And that was with Andy's and Mad Tony's help! Note reconditioned yokes!

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin/Today6.jpg

But every bearing is perfect and every linkage is swinging like a couple from Cheshire!

This is being done properly! :)

Anyone want to buy a pile of minitwin? :)

Toby's super secret information is only worth half that at best :)

So, the update goes as follows:

I've rescued another bike from a life of mysery. Except this time it's a bit pointier :)

It hasn't run since 2008, it's been down the road quite a few times and it's looking very sorry for itself. However, it has a very good spec and it has set a lap time of 1.39 at Cadwell so it *used to be* quick enough.

Now we've just got to make it do it again! :)

I might actually try and get it to start tonight :)

The Bucket is dead! Long Live Bucket II - The Sequel!

cool, I bought one of those non-runners. I had it started outside the guys house before it got pushed into my van :-). Faulty coil connections and a crappy battery lead the only things keepign it from starting.

All prepared for serious swearing and shouting I headed to the back of the van in the serious cold to get Bucket II - The Sequel to start.

I changed the battery and ... He lives!!! First push! fired up before it had fully turned over once!

And this is the most Evil, nasty (Fantastic) sounding (underseat) exhaust I've EVER heard on an SV! BONUS! About 120 Db at first guess :D

Oh yes, happy Bunny. I knocked £750 off the price because it wouldn't start!

oooohhhh! We're veg's now are we? :)

Actually it feels very extreme and focussed compare to the bucket. A much more agressive riding position. No wonder you go so fast, you can't wait to get off the bloody things :)

It needed a new fairing and can. I'd already put a grand into it more than I'd ever see back if I sold it but I had every intension of spending the winter getting it ready to be a front runner.

Then I landed a contract in Fort William for the winter and you can't really head back to Newcastle every weekend to work on a bike from there

... and then I found the new bike in need of rescue. But I can work on that in the back of the van :)

Its been a crazy week :)

Got a road bike? You need to do Fort William to Aviemore road at least once... per day :)
