Here is the build of Berlins MiniTwin which I'll post up pics of as it progresses.

Starting off with "Bucket" the fairly well used ex-Messie ex-Bigape K1. Which was dropped off here yesterday. A quick connection of a fresh battery saw it burst into noisy life. The stubby pipe sounded rather naughty (in an enclosed space, WHAT?) but as assured the motor ran sweet as a nut.

The intention; Reduce weight, and simplify. Add a smattering of pukka high quality race parts and then wait for Carl to crash it.

Then begins the process of weight reduction.
Starting with getting rid of some of the wiring. electrics from Stig-of the-"Wiring isn't my strong point"-Dump

And I thought my "loom of doom" was confusing. Ah well, out with the cutters.

On with the weight reduction. A little percussive persuasion saw most of the unnecessary components removed.

Won't be needing this lot:

(Ok maybe the ignition unit can stay)

Yes, must have been late registered, old stock or something.

Seriously, wtf is that all about?!

Minitwin regs mean 72bhp SAE cap... whereas mine has trick camshafts and few other goodies which mean a bit more grunt.
Also mine has far better brakes.

However, I ride like a girl, so yes it will be faster than mine.

First job.. Get that downpipe polished! :D

nah, second thoughts lag it, looks sexier!

Parts coming off the 600 to go onto this one include but are not limited to...

WP rear shock
GSXR600 K3 full fairing
Fairing mount and steering damper
Battery
Harris rearsets
Rear tail unit and sub frame (if it fits)
Seat
R&G bar ends
Race brake hoses back and front
Some Sticky 120/70 front rubber.
Anything else that'll fit!

I'll get these stripped off this weekend and down to you ASAP.

Chris, can you weld titanium? maybe we should "adapt" the full race pipe on the 600 to fit this? :)

This is the easiest build I've ever done ;)

C

yorkie_chris
13-06-10, 07:10 PM
I can try weld Ti but it is bloody expensive thing to blow holes in :-P. I think it is some complex stuff because of shielding needed.
Better to sell it and buy nice leo system.

Swap you for a full length can. This one will be too loud for track noise limit. (I know you have one kicking about)

also have:
a fancy undertail thing that gets rid of stock snowplough.
Clear lensed rear light unit
Entire wiring loom (for spares)
Rear brake light switch
Sidestand switch
Clutch switch

plus loads of other stuff surplus to requirement which will be for sale

Berlin
13-06-10, 07:16 PM
On the subject of selling stuff. I've given Chris the nod to sell whatever comes off it and isn't going to be used again. Whatever we get goes back into the build so if you see anything you fancy let him know. :)

Of course, if you want to pay over the odds for the parts you get your name on the fairing as a Sponsor :D

And on the subject of sponsors, If you want to become a member/Sponsor of "Team Full Moon Racing" Just send a picture of you bare butt to us along with a fiver and we'll stick it on the fairing! :) The definitive hairy bikers!

I do, but I paid you for that, so I'll keep it! Besides there can never be enough Art can spares, I might want two ;-)
Nope don't want a fancy undertray thingy, Suzy is in the S.P.A.S gang. Tother ones already done.

So after a session in the shed of doom re-learning how to TIG weld, followed by a gentle reminder of how to regrind tungstens, followed by a bit of TIg welding, followed by a bit of tungsten sharpening... You get the picture, I haven't got the hang of welding without contaminating the electrode a lot...

We have a quick prototype of battery box, to live down front somewhere.

Cool thread. Coincidentally, I have been looking at picking up an SV for racing! Not that I'm not enjoying the 675 - There are a few more classes and opportunites for a race-prepped SV as the rules are more strict than the 600s so it is relatively easy to build a competitive bike. :)

Keep us updated

Look at all that really heavy metal! Drill some holes in it man!
This is supposed to be a race bike! :D

Nice work! It will need at least one drain hole for the rain I always seem to race in, to get out.. or are the welds already up to that job on the rest of it? ;)

If it fits and stuff it has a date with the plasma-axe.*

The bottom plate does not cover the whole lot, there's a 3/4" gap either side to let water out.

*Doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "gas-axe" does it :(

AC TIG is damm expensive.

I gave up with my Oxy as I started to find it difficult to source fills.

Oh and having the neck of a torch glow red and fall off was "interesting", so stick, and a small mig at present

I did have a nice spot welder, ideal for new car panels, I loaned it to my brother in law who in turn loaned it to someone he died, so I don't know where it went.

The Stripping of the donor parts from the 600 is in full string fuelled by coffee and garibaldies :) Should be complete by about 4 pm and then the parts are heading south this weekend.

She'll be a much sexier bucket with this lot on! :)

C

Berlin
22-06-10, 11:22 AM
So a full day's fettling later and it turned out to be 12 steps forward, 14 steps back :)

We tried as many of the 600 parts on the bike as possible and had some success and some failures.

Sucesses included the Gixxer rearsets which were a *perfect* fit! :)
The rear tail unit will fit eventually too!

Less than successful donor parts included the rear WP shock which fit but has a completely wrong spring and too long a stroke length.
The fairing needs to be stretched by 4 inches to fit everywhere and it will be simpler to buy another one.
The rear sub-frame was close but no cigar.

Lots went onto the bike and then pretty much all of it came off again :)

And it actually started to look less like a bucket and more like a racer.

Chris decided to lighten it using the latest high tech cutting edge (literally) techniques!... Note the superb health and safety technique of squinting when using a grinder :D

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin3.jpg

And it starts to become a racer...
http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin2.jpg

With all the bits on... it gets a sticky front tyre, a grey wheel and new disks, calipers cleaned and rear suspension linkages had the a pound of sand removed from them. A full can of GT85 got us to this...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin4.jpg

and the view the competition will be getting...

I should have a complete "Wanted" list done and ready to post later in the week :)

And that would be some size envelope for YC but I'll see what I can do :)

The deadline for croft is the 24th July and it'll need a dyno run before that. I have to commit with my entry fees in about a week so we need to get cracking :)

SO, Photo update! (and about time I hear you type!)

Had another session with a very hungover mechanic somewhere slightly north of manchester and we achieved results!

He Akropovic exhaust (courtesy of Kat :) ) made it into one piece! Three bits still on back order to get it onto the bike but due in the next two weeks. This thing weighs as much as a spuggie fart!

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin124.jpg

Chief Mechanic number 1 hard at it...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin125.jpg

and meanwhile Deputy Vice president of getting bits on the bike finally fettled the seat unit and got the tank on ...
There'll be a rash of conversions now because its virtually a drop on fit... ish! :)

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin126.jpg

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin128.jpg

Rearsets adjusted rearwards and upwards. Still too low and too far forward though.

And the sexy tank with its sexy filler cap...

Next to go on will be the rear wavey disc because everyone knows that they make the bike faster (when in fact they should really be making the bike slower! :) )

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin131.jpg

and on Chief mechanic Number 1's advise, the only shock to bee seen with! Unfortunately, Its not on because it needs a service... even though it doesn't need a service. :)

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin132.jpg

As soon as the dog bones arrive it'll be gracing the Bucket's rear end.

Closer inspection of the gearing revealed a standard 15 tooth sprocket and those in the know will know the slow the bike down far too much so that was junked in favour of a lighter and much much faster 14 tooth Renthal Ultralight. Bear in mind the Bucket is going to be racing with a Walrus on his back so this is important!

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin133.jpg

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin134.jpg

No sign of the fairing yet as it had an "accident" but it should be arriving later in the week.

So as it stands it still needs a WHOLE lot more work and if we hadn't stopped for so many cups of tea we ... wouldn't have got a lot more done to be honest :)

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin135.jpg

Next, fork conversion and lots more bits going on in about two weeks!.

Still to do:
Replace left clip on as it turns out to be slightly bent.
Replace clutch lever as pivot worn out. (Clutch cable replaced yesterday)
Make spacers for the seat unit.
Weld seat hook bar back on where it's split
Fit captive spacers to front forks
Fork work
Fit front Mudguard
Fit newly aquired Supercorsa to rear wheel
Fit wets to wheels
Make Brackets, fit fairing, screen and screen bolts
Make whole wiring loom fit battery and battery box
Fit rev counter
Fit Penske and dogbones
Lockwire everything
Fit exhaust
Fit air box
Fit new Clutch plates
Fit race numbers
Fit race pads front and rear and bleed brakes

Clean and polish from top to bottom

Then...

See if it starts!

Not much then!

T minus 8 days to complete!

We're hoping to have it all together and running by a week on Monday (26th July). Problem is, I can't get down there with all the bits 'till a week today, so thats 48 hours to finish it. Its going to be a marathon session!

I've actually been practising putting each part on in my head so that I'll be quick enough on the day.

Only parts left to arrive are the front brake pads and the part for the Akrapovic exhaust. Everything else is now purchased and here.

There'll be a hell of a lot of photos by next Tuesday!

First outing is planned to be East Fortune on August 7th/8th.

Well, I hope I never have a weekend like that again! If it could have gone wrong, it did and then some.

As we left off the bike looked something like this...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/minitwin135.jpg

I showed up with a van full of everything left to finish the project and have THE WONDERBUCKET purring by early sunday afternoon for a relaxing drive back to HQ to stick some numbers on.

It didn't exactly go according to plan :)
It the time between leaving and coming back Chrisopher San was tasked with Forks and Electrics

I arrived to find this...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born001.jpg

The bike had magically self destructed :) Actually The Chief Mechanic had been pulling off monster shifts injecting Hocus pocus and voodoo into the forks and if you've ever seen the size of hokus pocus you'll relaise that it was never going to be an easy fit! Especially with the irregular shape of Voodoo nowadays!

So, I dived into the huge box of goodies and got the easy stuff out of the way whist Chris mixed eye of Newt with bats balls.

The Shark fin tootsie protector was the first thing to be drilled and tapped into place...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born002.jpg

Easy peasy! If it kept going like this it'd be finished by lunchtime!

Next on was the Penske Shock, which is pure suspension porn, along with the new Dogbones kindly donated by Mr Husky who is a very nice man but I wouldn't want to let him catch me peeing in a shop door way! (not that I pee in shop doorways!)

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born003.jpg

Looking good with the suspension linkage all nicely serviced (as best we could) the last time out.

So onwards and upwards (with chris now throwing toads and mucus into the pot) Toby showed up and various tyres showed up and made their way onto various rims. My wets arrived and made their way onto the spare and desperately shabby blue spare wheels. These will be getting a coat of paint at the earliest opportunity. Wheels were balanced and Toby made a cracking job of polishing the rear sprocket.
On went the rear wheel with Supercorsa Diablo scrub that will be the tyre of doom for the first outing with a matching Racetec Interact front (I know they don't match but they'll do to get the first weekend out of the way and I've used this combo before with good results)

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born004.jpg

Ah, now I see why he turned the air blue when I PM'd him :)
Wow that looks like 1 step forward and 12 back, it will be worth it in the end.

I think I spot a rather inconspicuous front end there getting in the way of the job (sorry about that)

Is gonna be awesome when its sorted, just a word of advice, don't bin it on the first outing or it won't be the crash you fear, it will be YC with the course grade of hammer!

Loving the commentary and pictures, thanks for taking the time out to update us all :-)

Can't wait to see the finished bike.

Berlin
27-07-10, 06:55 PM
A brew was consumed (thankfully not chris's brew which now had cobwebs and crows feet in it) and Bob showed up.

Meanwhile, on the other side a new and standard rear caliper was fitted with race pads and duly hung on the bike and after some tricky bleeding had at least had some bite on the new Braking wavy rear disc.

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born006.jpg

Another brew and some great craik later and it was time for the engine prepping to start! First of all, fit some gorgeous Iridium spark plugs! You can tell how excited I was at fitting these by the camera shake! Either that or it was from the explosion as Chris added Plutonium to his cauldron. I hope plutonium is legal in minitwins!

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born008.jpg

I really like these plugs.

More banter and drilling and hammering ensued and a little later a tray was fashioned to hold the ECU and the Reg reg which made its way onto the sub frame with some no expense spared Stainless rivets...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born009.jpg

Looking good! This will be protected from the elements by the cover on the bottom of the seat unit. (we hope!)

The ostrich was squashed unceremoniously into Chris' now bubbling concoction of dark matter and it was unanimously decided that the new magnetic, go faster sump plug with lockwiring holes was next to be fitted along with a K&N Lockwirable oil filter...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born010.jpg

It was about this time that things started to go ever so slightly wrong. We decided that it would be a good idea, given the bikes chequered past, to check the valve clearances.

Basically the exhaust valves were tighter than the inlets so they were all going to need shimming! Buggerance! No shims to fit so these would have to go onto the "To Buy" list for tomorrow. We even tried a different set of feeler gauges to make sure. Miles out.

And this must have started a trent becasue one by one little things started to show up that we hadn't planned for.

We were flying through the list though and we still had the Saturday evening and the next day to sor them. No worries!

We were flying through the list anyway...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born012.jpg

So, off we set again after some delicious Fishnchips, the airbox was cleaned and the filter desnorkled (shoot me! :) ) and the jets changed in the carbs and the needles moved one notch.
Problem two arrived! The Cv carb rubbers were so old the had shrunk and I couldn't get the buggers back on no matter what. EVENTUALLY (thats time lapse that is!) they were persuaded to fit using a feeler gauge and some silicone grease. Phew!

There was a bolt of lightning from Chris's area and he had his safety boots on! so we presumed that ment the voodoo was starting to go in.

We called it a day at 10 pm and turned on the telly for the MotoGP just as the red light went out for the start! You'd think we planned it! :)

That was a 7am till 10 pm shift.

Chris put "The Concoction" on simmer and we decided a 7am start the next day would easily see the bike finished!

Day TWO!

... and they're off!

Swearing was heard from Chris' area shortly after the first "Jumpstart" coffees were drank. "Someone" had buggered up a fork seal and it wasn't me and it wasn't Chris so who could that be? ;) New fork seals were added the the "To Get" list.

So off we popped and got those along with some "race" brake fluid from Halfrauds.

Back to work and it wasn't long before some More swearing and it was found that the New K-TechFork springs that had arrived were the wrong weight so a frantic ring around and some were found in Reactive Suspension, north of York and also some in Maxton, South of Manchester. A quick fiddle on the sat nav later and it turned out both places were 60 miles away, One around the York ring road at Lunchtime and one around the Manchester ring road at Lunchtime! York was chosen and I set off that way and Chris set off for Valve shims. Rendesvouse some hours later...

27-07-10, 07:18 PM
One stressful trip to York later, 40 quids worth of diesel and another 20 quid on top of what the K-Tech Springs cost and I was the proud owner of some Racetech Springs.

Pie and a cupper time!

Chris fitted the valve shims and banged the rocker covers back on and I handed over two very expensive curly pieces of metal so he could sprinkle pixie power on them and the spanners were a blur again! New front hoses were fitted and a new left handlebar along with a new clutch lever and R&G bar ends. Will this whirlwind of race parts never end? :)

The front calipers were attached (no sign of the race brake pads yet) and Renthal grips and an R6 Quick action throttle tube found its way on.

And finally the carbs found their way back onto the bike. After what seemed like an endless stream of part and work you'd think it'd be looking like a race bike good and proper...

It wasn't...

http://www.corporateflyfishing.com/images/born011.jpg

The battery box was attached (that took a LOT of swearing to make it fit!!) and The list was nearly complete. How the hell can a list be nearly complete and the bike still look like that?

Chris' Cauldron was still bubbling away in the background so I refitted the seat unit so it actually lined up with the middle of the bike.

and we were running out of things to add on.

I then fitted the smashed rev counter (we need a better one of these if anyone has one) and the front fairing bracket.

A FORK ARRIVED! I fitted it and was quickly informed that I had to unfit it as Gandalf need it back.

So off it was swept again.

By this time it was approaching 8 pm on Monday and we looked like we were going to have to admit it wasn't going to happen.

And then I noticed the fork leg lying on the ground that Chris had put about 60 man hours into was at somewhat of a "jaunty angle"! or in other words, it was FUBAR'ed!

Now, I have to admit there's been a lot of manly swearing all weekend but what followed was a tyrade that would have made Chubby Brown blush!

So that was that. Emergency "Find some new forks" was put into effect and I headed off to Edinburgh sans WonderBucket.

But we'll have it ready next week WONT WE!! :D

9 Days to race day. Tick... Tick... Tick..

Newsflash!

New forks purchased via some masterful "Buy it now" Fleabay negotiations because we just couldn't wait 5 days 6 hours and 24 seconds for them.

We are now officially more than £1000 over budget :)

So new forks are winging their merry (and expensive) 24 hour delivery way to Halifax ready to be mercilessly gutted, welded, carressed, cursed, hammered, cut, drilled, and threaded. Then they can be filled with Plutonium laced Blair Witch Soup and put on the bike for the weekend.

HURRAH! :)

Just seen this Carl, great thread. Shows the commitment required just to get on the grid, nevermind get a result. Hope you get it sorted in time for East Fortune, if you do I'll see you there.

get used to that, it never reduces once you are bitten by a racing bug ;-)

too bloody right. I've spent many an hour sorting the bike getting it ready to race. All worth it once the lights go out though.

Dont forget to let us know how bad the butterflies get in the race holding area before you hit the track :-)

:-), what could possibly go wrong?

Nah, the racing nerves will override the worry about loose nuts and bolts for the first couple of laps.

Funny you should say that Flymo. When I used to race in the early 90' I measured my heart rate for a race and had a heartbeat of 210 on the start line and 180-190 for the race.

Now, and quite weirdly, its the opposite.
When I'm on the grid and waiting for the lights to go out I get an extreme serenity decent over me. Things go extremely calm and its as if time slows down. It seems to take everyone two seconds to get going after the red light goes out. I *know* for sure I could get off the line much quicker but if I went when *I* see the lights go out I'd ride into the bikes in front of me. :)

Even going up the first straight and round the first corner I'm extremely calm. But once the pack starts to spread out it's like a switch goes on and I suddenly turn into Red Mist Man and all pins are pulled! :)

About lap 8 of 10 it hits its peak and I find I'm ridiculously out of breath and sliding it out of every corner. I'm "manic" by this point. Shouting at myself and going mental. Full on race rage! :)

Its the best feeling in the world :)

Becasue I've missed Knockhill through work and Croft through not having the bike ready, I have to catch up on those tracks for my orange vest points. I was thinking about maybe Cadwell and Elvington with Auto66 but I'm not sure I'll get time now.

lol, you sound totally mental! :-)

There are a few races at Three Sisters towards the end of the year, next meeting at Anglesey is the Anglesey Grand over two days. Its usually a good meeting in a beautiful setting, excellent track. Not too far for you boys.

You should have seen me in the early 90's racing 350 LC's! I'd ride around the outside of *anyone*!

I fell off a lot. :)

I like to think I was "outperforming the tyres" :D

Anglesey sounds great and I know its Steve from the Honda Hornet clubs fave track.

We'll see how we get on. I'm turning work away at the moment, I'm so busy so I'm having to squeeze inthe racing very carefully.

I've just chased up the last two remaining deliveries and one (the Akrapovic parts) is being posted tomorrow and I'm waiting for a call back regarding the race pads. I've gone with Ferodo race pads [part numbers FDB2048CP211 and FDB2049CP211] as they're half the price (literally) of the Performance Friction ones.

So the only things left to sort out are the numbers and a can of yellow paint/yellow fablon for the backgrounds.

I think we might just pull this off you know :)

I didn't actually realise this was being documented with photos and that on here.

Was over there tonight and the new wiring loom is looking rather sexy.

Plus, yes that rear sprocket is the best part of the bike, very shiny shiny
