A dam? ffs are there any dams in the UK? Reservoirs are dams right?

That pic was took by a reservoir so it doesn't have to be the electricity generating type

I've got no chance of that one, think the nearest is 80 miles away.

Lenny, still haven't fixed the seat ? If you need hand, ride over to mine the weekend and I'll sort it for you.

If you win you owe me a pint!

Alternatively just find your nearest stream and copy the otters, I loved building dams when I was a kid! Nobody said what kind of dam it had to be, if it holds back water...!

Think my closest would be a fair ride too but it isn't so bad of a weekend, which is why I really like the idea of this. Will get me to visit places I normally wouldn't. Anyway, looks like TommyH is on the case for this one :)

A lot of reservoirs or even local duck ponds, are man made, which means they must have a dam of sorts. Check out google maps and look for any body of water with one straight or unnaturally curved edge. Sutton Park has a dam.

Now it's just a race to get there, take the photo and post it! Unfortunately I'm stuck in a hotel in Leeds with no bike.

Sorry mabozzar, unless they were taken after 8:30 they don't count. Last person gets to SET the challenge with an old or file picture. Someone else can only then win the challenge by taking a NEW photo after challenge was set.

If you are unsure, check the rules

I think a hire bike will probably be acceptable, but if you weren't riding it, or weren't even there when the picture was taken, I'm pretty sure that defeats the object of the game.

I think Tam's latest challenge will be a bit tricky to get, given the lack of rain and therefore water in rivers. I have my thinking cap on...

Need to think out the box on these challenges folks!

There's no problem finding a waterfall, there are plenty of small natural falls, and man made falls at wiers, locks and sluice gates, all over the country. Often fed by reservoirs. This one is at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire,

http://www.myfinepix.com/sites/default/files/imagecache/full/blog/217604/dscf4283_800x600.jpg

the trouble is getting a bike anywhere near one to take a photo. They are usually only accessible by foot.

If my XT600 was on the road I'd take this tag no problem without going further than 10 miles from my house, I could go here this afternoon

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Higham+Ferrers,+Rushden&hl=en&ll=52.332038,-0.681683&spn=0.000532,0.001635&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=16.889907,53.569336&t=h&z=20

under that bridge is a 5 ft vertical drop into a plunge pool that my dog loves getting a bath in, but there's no way of getting the Daytona near it.

Alternatively I could get the Daytona here,

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=geddington&ll=52.437004,-0.686676&spn=0.000531,0.001635&gl=uk&t=h&z=20&layer=c&cbll=52.437004,-0.686676&panoid=iw5KpUWmDH_4UoPHKrLd6Q&cbp=12,79.81,,0,22.15

but it's only two small weirs with a 1 ft drop each, not too impressive.

Luckypants
28-06-11, 09:17 AM
Sorry a weir is not a waterfall. Weirs is weirs.

Yes the challenge is to get a bike a near to one, but with the lack of rain recently it may be a issue as most waterfalls near a road are natural, so flow could be limited or ceased altogether, so it's then not really a waterfall, just a cliff? :D

-Ralph-
28-06-11, 09:32 AM
Sorry a weir is not a waterfall. Weirs is weirs.

wa·ter·fall/ˈwôtərˌfôl/
Noun: A cascade of water falling from a height, formed when a river or stream flows over a precipice or steep incline.

If the water runs down a man made slope, I'd agree with you, but if it 'falls' vertically off an edge it's a waterfall, whether or not the edge it falls off is man made, and regardless of how far it falls. I wouldn't try to take the tag with the ford at Geddington (otherwise I'd have done it already), but the 5ft drop at Higham Ferrers, or the Bradgate Park image, absolutely would be valid.

Nothing in the tag said the waterfall had to be naturally occurring, or falling down a cliff face.

Luckypants
28-06-11, 09:38 AM
No agreed it does not have to be naturally occurring and I think we are arguing over semantics. It's the kayaker in me that is being pedantic over the definition of a weir...

http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/photos/medium/20510601.jpg

Waterfall in the background, weirs in the foreground, all man made. :D

-Ralph-
28-06-11, 09:52 AM
Waterfall in the background, weirs in the foreground, all man made. :D

Where is that? Taken from a road? Near you? Working from home today? Go get the tag! ;) :D

I'm not trying to be argumentative and don't want to argue over semantics, I'm just saying we need to think a bit more laterally about these challenges and be able to find local solutions to the challenges presented. If the game has to wait weeks for someone to get the opportunity to do a 2 hour ride into Wales, or Scotland, or a national park, because we are trying to get an exact copy of a photo that was taken on somebody's holidays, the game will fizzle out, especially come the winter, it needs to keep moving to keep it interesting.

I tried to take the tag this lunchtime with a shot of this fall, but with so little water it was hard to see it is a waterfall at the moment...

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w111/luckypants_photos/2011_0628photo0002.jpg

There is also a new chunkier fence and summer undergrowth preventing the waterfall showing in the photos... Tried several shots..

I think that's good enough IMO, although there's a fence in the way, it's clearly your VFR in front of a waterfall. The object of the game is to get you out riding your bike to a location that meets the criteria, and you've been out today and done that.

Anyone else think Luckypants should set the next tag?

Luckypants
28-06-11, 04:04 PM
Ta Ralph, but I'm planning a longer trip out tomorrow evening to get a better shot of a different fall, where the waterfall will be clearer. It's a longer ride and fulfills the object of the game!

The fall in the above photos is literally 5 minutes away.

+1 for what Ralph said, the object of the game is to take your bike to a certain location, it's not the photo comp, they don't have to be works of art.

Also I want to go for a ride tomorrow and want LP to put up a new challenge so I can do that. Pref something that exists in the midlands, i.e. not mountains!

Brettus
29-06-11, 07:53 AM
I'd have said that satisfies the rules, again its not a stunning picture that is sought. either way though its LPs choice if he has already planned the next ride but I'd say the first is sufficient. Whatever is decided a new tag by the weekend would be nice :)

Nice waterfall pic! Damn! Such an easy tag! I could get an ice cream out the freezer, go out to the bike just now, and take a picture. But since the object of the game is to ride the bike that wouldn't be cricket. Anyone who hasn't been drinking tonight currently setting off to their local petrol station for a cornetto maybe?

Thanks, nice ride to get there and I visited me mum while out, so the game works for me!

Such an easy tag! I could get an ice cream out the freezer, go out to the bike just now, and take a picture.

Yeah I realised that after I set the tag, but there had been mention of setting a tag more accessible to all (eg no mountains) so I went for something anyone could do. My original choice of tag will take a bit of getting and is kept for another day.
But since the object of the game is to ride the bike that wouldn't be cricket. Is also what I hoped people would think.

Brettus
30-06-11, 09:12 AM
Liking the choice of topic, I've got an idea for it at lunch if it still stands. Re the pink bike, I'd imagine its down to white balance, the camera will pick something it deems to be white and balance all the other colours from it, so other colours end up skewed. I tend to shoot most stuff in RAW now on my camera and that way I can tweak the white balance later in case the camera gets it wrong. You can tweak it with a normal JPG but not to the same degree. Even on point and shoot cameras you can choose the white balance setting, auto will take an educated guess (usually pretty good in fairness) but if you know you are shooting indoors under tungsten lights or outdoors on a cloudy day then you can set it accordingly and it should look closer to reality when you look through the LCD.

I think anyway, I am fully prepared to be told I'm wrong, I don't fully understand the mechanics of photography but have got a grasp of some bits.

I agree, let each tag run until someone claims it. The game is about getting out on your bike to take the photo to claim the tag.

I know if I want to I can ride over to the B4407 which is currently closed to claim the tag... I don't have time at the moment as it's going to take a couple of hours - the point is the tag is achievable if someone wants it.

Nope I thought as long as it's taken AFTER tag was set?

Wasn't taken by me so can't really use it.

I thought it had to involve your bike, not be taken by you as well.

I think as long as you are in the photo or taking it then it's ok. Just can't be someone elses photo from 50 miles away....

Assuming the photo Lenny posted meets the time taken rule, I think it's an excellent way to claim the current tag. Up to him if he feels it meets the criteria....

Yeah Lenny just needs to post it in the game thread.

Unless we want to start the debate on whether a track counts as a 'road' :smt096

Well as l3nny doesn't seem to want to claim the 'obstruction' tag with his track pick, i'm going to nick it.

Haha then you'd be pleasantly surprised Phil :) theyre actually pretty good! Curry, fish and chips, lasagne theyre all there. The place is a rip compared to one pub in Birkdale in Southport though, thats 2 for £7! Only take the missus there on special occasions \\:D/
