My aim for the year is to only enter the photo competition when I've taken a shot FOR the competition, to try and get me out more with the camera.!

I must admit, I thought this was the point of this competition. You get the brief, then you go out and take a photo that fulfills that brief. Rather than dig out a photo fro the archives...

Yeah I think it pretty much is but when the topic is waterfalls or something and people don't have one anywhere near then older ones result. I got lazy last year and was using some of mine, gonna try harder anyway :)

Unfortunately, there aren't many castles around Ruislip. So I've submitted one I took in the summer. But if I get the opportunity to visit a castle before the competition ends I might change it.

To Elephant & Castle is less than 20 miles - and you get a free elephant!

This.

I know I've bored Mr C about it before but next to Moreton Corbet Castle is Moreton Corbet church, where I got married to Lady Poppy (20 years ago this year). Small world.

I like caerphilly castle! it's lovely there!

Bit of a long day trip for you Fenjer! We enjoyed it too but the weather was a bit blustery and cloudy. Was hoping to get a nice reflection shot with blue sky behind it but it was not to be that day and we were staying too far away to pop back.

I'm waiting for some smarty pants that lives within the borders of England to post a picture of their house ;)

I am lucky with this topic as I can pass 3 castles on my way to work, I've just got to find an interesting way to shoot them.

Actually, I've realised there are two castles within travelling distance of Ruislip. Windsor Castle and the Tower of London. But it's going to be hard to get an interesting shot of either without a crowd of tourists in the foreground.

multiple shots then average your tourists away, creates quite an eerie feel too.

An alternative is to use a very dark ND filter (or even a welding mask glass). Very long exposure gives the same effect as Brettus' suggestion.

Windsor! Why didn't I think of that one instead of traipsing out to Hertfordshire... Oh well, as you say it's difficult to get past the hoards of Japanese tourists when close up but I do know of a spot a mile or two out that has a nice view of it dominating the town. Sounds like I have something to do next weekend now :compress:.

Right, I've got 3-4 new castle options now, I surely CAN'T be blocked with these, it's like playing tic-tac-toe with castles with you lot ;)

Haggis, is that REALLY the name of the "astle and if so was it owned by a once infamous outlaw that turned good or something? :D

Yep, really! Quite a story behind it too.

It's the ancestral home of the Duke of Sutherland. "Boo, hiss!" Infamous, oh yes, definitely.

He was responsible for the Highland Clearances, when rich land owners evicted crofting families, destroying their homes in the process, in order to use the land for sheep farms in a massive scale. Think of it as 18th century ethnic cleansing - tens of thousands affected, and forced to restart their lives in America, Canada, Australia etc. with nothing to their names.

Such a nice bloke, lol. He commissioned a massive stone column with a statue of himself on top on the highest hill nearby so he could oversee his lands, but more so that his remaining tenants remembered to keep out of trouble or they would be next. It still stands despite numerous campaigns over the years to have it removed.

Changed mine now, leaving Mav and Mister C to the foot fetish fiesta.

I came across a letter the other day from an old pal from uni days. We were both in the Camera Society and got B&W film really cheap that way, the uni had it's own lab and darkroom we were allowed to use so we mucked about with our SLRs. Seeing the letter reminded me of a shot this mate took of me. Trying a long exposure he sneaked up and took a snap of me and then lined up to do the same, only I was ready this time and slowly moved my head around as the shutter clicked open. It came out really well and he had en enlargement of it made for me - wish I could find it now... So I had a go at recreating it - very easy to do with a cable release and a swing out screen on the 700 to get it square in the frame. Looks scary though so sorry about that :).

The hire contract stated the bike could not be used to attend or participate in any organised motorcycle group ride or event.
I'm sure they would have had a heart attack had they known there would be 104 bikes on the Saturday rideout.

I can't remember who took this pic so if you do, please let me know.

Thanks for vote Dave!
The pic is nothing special except that it was taken by Rictus.

More on the story:

Ed picked me up at the airport and the first stop just a few minutes away was Hunt's in Manchester to pick up the bike.
We were about ten feet from walking in the door when I said to Ed, Er...don't mention anything about the .org or the AR or they won't let me hire the bike."
For the next two seconds, the look on his face was priceless!!!
As if I had told him we were about to rob a bank. LOL
But then he assured me not to worry and yes, sure enough, they also questioned him as to whether we would be attending a 'group event' and bless him, he had to cover for me!
Thanks Ed.

Damn, was looking forward to entering this month but just couldn't get the opportunity and time to coincide I'm afraid, it seems to be so rarely dark at the moment! Bravo to all entrants though, I love the variation of images in the common theme.

Been way too busy recently with work but it is slowly easing off and I want to get and take some compelling images, I'll be back to show off my latest shots and waffle at y'all soon ;) In the mean time I'm really enjoying reading and browsing, I just don't get chance to comment as often as I'd like.

I tried that image I PM'd you about Brettus, but the night just isn't long or dark enough at this time of year!

BP: Damn, was looking forward to seeing the result.
Definitely agree on the not long or dark enough though, tried to get a milky way shot last night and after being stood in a church yard in darkest Wales at midnight (alone, I'm brave/stupid like that), I can indeed confirm it just isn't dark enough! Had hoped I'd get something at the darkest point of night but apparently not, looks like it'll only be good for August's new moon now.

I was then hoping to reenact something like this for this months shot but couldn't get a willing participant to help out.

Hah just caught up on this after a monstrous day at work. Thanks for the compliments guys. :-) I'll be back with more soon, also planning an epic photographical all nighter in Wales late next month. Stay tuned, it could be cool. (Disclaimer: it's equally likely not to be though ;-))

Anyway, quadcopter and steel wool... Unfortunately no quadcopter is stable enough for long exposures, my pictures only come out well when there is LOTS of sun as it is, murky days just don't cut it. No amount of money could compensate it either unfortunately.

But i have had a couple of ideas that I need to investigate thanks to the comments.

Congrats to Jambo BTW, first solo winner in a while :-)

What did you use for the effects?

Brettus
14-07-14, 04:29 PM
Thanks, I really tried, you wouldn't imagine how many attempts it took. It'd have been easier if I'd have had voice activated shutter (AKA a friend helping) so I'd get lined up and try it but I kept getting closer to what I wanted. The 7 arches helped reinforce the rainbow notion. Shame the light strip doesn't do the colours in order but I can't complain, it is rather flexible in what it does.

Same location that I've used before but it meant I knew what to expect and it seemed like a good idea at the time.....

All the time keeping an eye on the single point of entry into the building for any neer-do-wells. Was OK until walking through the woods back to the car and my mind conjured up the thought "you can see great ahead of you, but what if someone is behind you?" not helpful brain! A quick glance back with the head torch and a recomposing of my resolve then I was almost on the tarmac of the sealed off road running to the place so I could hear any extra footsteps better.

Really like the place though, such a large open space but supported by what would be a solid wall but for the arches. I wonder what it'd be like to go in there in the day, spend an hour or two brushing it out and then be a lot more open to different light effects and not dodging human detritus left behind by bored revellers.

one of these, or one like it anyway, cheaper ebay jobby.
Cut the cable off the power brick and wired it in to some croc clips, stashed a leisure battery in my rucksack (100ah size, bigger than an SV battery!) it was all I had that had charge in it. cable out of that and remote held in other hand.

holding it taut and pointing toward the camera was the hardest part. I've got a plan for Mk2, more ebay purchases inbound ;)

As usual they say this is the last chance to see it. I think it needs some sort of air worthiness certificate next year which is tougher than usual so may not happen. I recon the Vulcan display this year was tamer than previous years but I guess when you are in something that old you have to take it easy.

I'm going to try and take something interesting for this month's theme, it's a great choice. It did make me think of this pic taken by Verna and a word of warning - if ever Jaime asks 'Do you you have any electronic devices about your person?' while you are standing next to a child's paddling pool don't answer - just run away - fast! It's not so much on the water as under it.

Fill the paddling pool with mud, then wrestle with DB. Pics/film or it didn't happen.

What isn't apparent from that photo is there is more gin in Jaime than there is water in that pool. Good thing my watch is a cheap Swatch. I had to travel home in a rather odd assortment of Verna's clothes.
