Been out on a short trip on the bike today, to get some things, nothing interesting.
Did stop off at Sainsbury on the way back to get Bike mag. I started the bike and was about to get on when this OAP got off his C90 and looked over my bike for a good 5 minutes and then wittered on about how bikes have changed from his era of 350 single matchless or something... I just smiled back.
Someone shoot me if I get older and reminisce about my SV650.

I've got a pirate party to go to in a couple of weeks. Just getting warmed up. There is about 20 of us all going dressed as pirates and I've requested that we knock on a few random doors, shout "Aaaaaaaar" and then casually walk off. Call it a social experiment. I will be filming it as well.

Just think how much money we could save on petrol, commuting etc. I think I would honestly be more productive at home. Mind you I'm sure the government would then raise income tax as they would be losing the revenue from fuel. Makes me laugh, they moan on about getting people off the road as it's 'dirty' yet they would have to get the income on lost tax from somewhere else. I'm emigrating. Who's with me!?

Yer working from home would be cool but it comes down to if management trusts the staff to do the work and how it would affect productivity.
I could imagine if I ran a business, a couple of my workers are working from home but I have to go into the office... privilege revoked! :p

Dan, I told you speed triples are the answer. So it's a bit more on the insurance and a few more points on your license but such a hoot. Or you could be just another sportsbike rider.
Saw one the other week in navy blue with the cobra twin stripes over the top and a single light conversion. Looked very nice indeed.
And you can get a really cool pointy wheel-nut too.

Cheap as chips, goes like stink and the nakedness tends to keep the cruising speeds down to almost sensible levels. Welcome to a blast on mine if you want to try one out.

I may well take you up on that offer. Seriously been looking at them as a good alternative to the Hornet. Will use it for commuting except over winter (I'll be getting the train then). How's the fuel economy Mr Mark?

do you close your eyes and stick a pin in mcn everyday?
How's the fuel economy Mr Mark?
That's rather down to what you do with it and how it's set up. ;) But baring in mind I'm still in the "woooohoooooo" phase of opening it up flat out once in a while, (while thinking song-2 in my head) I'm probably not getting the best MPG out of it.
Used to get 130 from full to flashing yellow on the 650, get about 100 on the thou. However I have been assured the reserve is greater on the pointy than the curvy so may well be comparing apples and washing machines here.
If you're doing any sort of motorway work I expect it'll actually be more economical than the 650 as it's not trying so hard when cruising at 80-90.
And you save a fortune on front tyres as they get no wear at all in the first few weeks.
Finally I know where you can get a very nice high level can should you need one :)
injury_ian
16-04-08, 10:40 AM
if the 1000 tank is same as 650 tank, I'll get near on 120-130 before light (if the reserves are the same)

Thanks for the feedback Mark and Ian. It will be a tough thing to give up the Hornet as it is such a great bike. My only real worry about the SV1000 is the handling will just feel naff in comparison. Mark, what's it like when you push the big litre SV? You've seen how I ride so comment accordingly.
EDIT: Why did I never think of an SV1000!? Read some reviews and everyone raves about them. Build quality is not great (as per usual) but accoring to everyone they are fantastic bikes to ride and are a real hoot. Sheet, could this be the bike I've been looking for? And all this time it's been right under my bloody nose?! I can get a new one for ?5k!!!! In black too. Test ride booked........:p
Damn site better now I've got some decent tyres and got used to it. It feels a lot more planted than the 650 but that's not too hard. I've actually not yet been out on a warm dry to chuck it around a lot and I'll probably never chuck it around as much as you. However chicken strips down to about 10mm. Not convinced the brakes are anything special but that may just be because the front-end does not dice and bottom out so it's all a lot less frantic.
Certainly able to give it some good left/right flick on roundabouts with some healthy counter steering it swaps sides quickly. You need to be careful about giving it a full hand-full on the exits in the damp/cold as it'll spin up due to the huge torque.

I've always fancied a full faired one, but knowing the SV although it is a good bike, its uncomfortable over distance, cheap fixings and short service intervals annoy.
add that to the 1000 is quite thirsty (he says driving an rx8).
I think fz1 fazer is most likely for me. all things to all men... unless that CB1000R is as good as it looks....

I did look at the FZ1 but it's quite pricey (new). Lovely looking bike though. I'm looking for a cheap alternative to my Hornet that still has hooligan potential at the weekends and 5k new is not to be sniffed at. Test ride will tell all but this is looking like a good candidate. May still have enough left over for a 636 too. Although that maybe pushing my luck with Mrs Dan.

Luckily though my garage is far enough away from the house that she won't know what bike I have. Mwahahahaha!:)
I settled for the SV1000 because I could not justify the speed tiple (c5k) and could not find a firestorm for the right price/condition. Still rather fancy a firestorm though.
Got change out of 2k for my 04 SV1000 with 24k miles on it. Hugh oomph per pound. Much better components than the 650. Saw one with full GSX-R style fairings and that looked really good. Mine had been commuted for three years so not pristine but certainly has not fallen apart.
Like I said Dan, if you want a twirl on mine let me know. I'm sure the newer ones are a bit quicker/tighter but you get 3k left over for an additional toy if you go the second hand route.

Thanks Mark, appreciate it. You about on Friday?
TBH I need something with low mileage as I will be putting 60 miles per day on it. I'll look at second hand ones but may just bite the bullet and get a new one as some are going for £4'600!! :o
As it happens I should be working locally in Fleet on Friday. May be able to arrange something either late afternoon or early evening. Dan/Mark, you might be right folks, I've seen that black SV1000C advertised by dealers brand new for as low as 4650 - nobody seems to want to buy it!
It's not the most sophisticated of bike, in fact it's a little on the agricultural side but I liked the idea that it was not a silky smooth as the big IL4s. I took out a CB1300, smooth and huge power but fet a bit sanitised. Perhaps I'm just a bit weird.
I'm far too lazy to have a high-reving SS600 and far too fat for anything involving riding with your knees round your ears and ass higher than your head.
Still looking forward to my 1098 test ride. Lets see what happens when style meets V-twin power :)
Under 5k for a new sv1000 has to be a bargain. They have not sold so I expect you'll get a bit of a deal on anything in stock anywhere as they'll be keen to shift them. Jack Lilley offered me one for 4,700 last year so I expect that'll be under 4,500 by now. Although they are a bit of a nightmare to deal with Motts (A30 south of Basingstoke) also had one in stock last year.

- The stupid tart in the 4x4 who assumed that she had priority coming out of a side rode, nearly wiping me out. Then she beeped and gestured at me as if I were in the wrong.
- My new boss.
- The project 'manangers' at work
- Telecomms carriers who don't tell you what's going on.
- Greeks
- Turks
- My own stupidity for leaving my mates house keys at home, 30 miles away, when I promised him I would feed his cat while he is on holiday.

Does anyone want to go to the bother of getting a very nice wide-screen TV fixed before I take it down the tip? It's a 28" JVC. Got a fault on the PSU. Doubtless needs a 50p component but the insurance complany very kindly gave me a super sexy flat screen thing so I have no need for it but it goes against my principals to skip it. Free to collector.
