the technical term for which I believe is "hollow coring" (I may be slightly wrong though....)Nope, the hollow coring is done on the outfield every few years using cutters that lift out a section a bit like an apple corer, the holes are then refilled with a mixture of sand, soil and seed and it improves the overall condition of the outfield as the new grass merges with the old top layer. We haven't done it this year, just scaryfying and seeding.

The pictured drilling creates narrow tubes in the London clay pitch about 6 inches deep which are left open. This allows more water to penetrate deeper into the clay while encouraging carbon dioxide to rise creating aeration which reduces the flat areas of panning and the larger cracks opening up.

It's amazing how much I've learned about the art of cricket groundsmanship over the years.

Had a flight in a glider today. Towed up by a ground based winch. Impressive acceleration and rate of climb. Great views of the Long Mynd in Shropshire.

Out for a wander yesterday with Lady Poppy, the munchkin, her other half and my compact camera as I was feeling lazy. By the end of our trek (via a jolly nice pub for lunch) we stood on the edge of the Chilterns at Whiteleaf Cross looking out over the Vale of Aylesbury and Oxfordshire at the rain coming in. Got back to the car just in time.

Mine's not quite as exciting as the pandas. Was just moving the gro bags to the bin and came across this little fella. I think it's a female newt. Iggle was trying to play with her, he'd got bored with chasing tomatoes! Managed to carefully pic her up and gently hid her behind the big plant pots. There are loads of mini beasts for her to feed on there.

Manually set awb. This is usually done by taking a photo of something white to tell the camera what white looks like.

I work a half day friday + have holidays to use so a wee sneaky long weekend resulted in the riding of a motorcycle to foreign places. This harbour is one of a number locally made famous by Game of Thrones. Arya Stark jumps in here whilst running away from the Waif

Had to go shopping in that London today and the weather was great. Wandered off along the Thames Path when I was done and was in the right place a the right time it seems. Lots of 'togs about taking this one - they all had their DSLRs and tripods and you could almost hear them sneering at my elderly compact hand held with just a railing for support but I got chatting to them afterwards and it seemed none of them had thought to play with the exposure adjustment... The only one of them that seemed to have an (unprocessed) image to compare had a set of very expensive Lee filters in play.

Heading back towards the tube when the skies darkened a bit too much I was treated the bridge being raised. It was clearly my day today! Lots of happy tourists snapping away at this too, as you can imagine. Shutter speed is half a second so the boat going through is a little blurred but I'm happy enough.

find a team local to you and get involved again then! it's friendly, social, competitive and usually a great atmosphere in the clubhouse after your game and best of all it's not played on grass anymore!

Managed to extend my summer, as I was sent to Lisbon by my boss for 3 days. I'm not a city boy, perfer the quieter bits, so I went to the Oceanarium, said to be the best in the world? It didn't disappoint, and was a nice calm way to spend an afternoon out of the heat.

Lots of colleagues here love their rugby so were dead excited to have a photo with it. Me, I just make sure no one nicks it.
