So Ultegra might be worth considering on the new build then, or replacing the bust 105 stuff with Ultegra at any rate.
I've just given the bike a good going over. Chain set is also bent. So good knows if the bottom bracket is OK, seems to spin round with no grinding, but cant really tell.
I've added it all up from what I can see is bent or b*ggered. £1167 to put it back how it is now. Thats without the cost of a replacement frame. Which I think is knackered as well. Van Nicholas dont make my frame anymore so I cant get a price on that.

.
Yes, most certainly, although this years 105 will be very similar to last years Ultegra in many ways. They hold it back a year on the lower groupsets.
But I saw pictures of the new electronic shifting 105 today and that looks very nice :smt016

I'm not sure I like the idea of the Electronic shifting. I'd be concerned about being out on a sportive and the batteries going flat / me forgetting to charge them and then being stranded with no gears.
maviczap
10-03-11, 08:47 PM
I'd go for it, its been well proven to be reliable up to now, especially as its going to mass sales groupsets.
The thing that puts me off, is the price of new levers if I stack it & you can't fix it with a new gear cable from Halfrauds on a Sunday.
I would have loved it on my TT bike, with a gear change switch on the end of the tri bar or handlebar.

Dunno, I'd want to try a bike fitted with it first. Like I say not convinced, I remember downtube shifters, anything above that is over kill :-)

I remember downtube shifters before indexed shifting :p
I was sceptical about STi shifters, now I wouldn't have anything else.
I'm all for new stuff and I don't like the way the UCi has stiffled progress in bike design.

Pity they don't do something about the rash of black jersey's or similar kit being worn by teams. David Harmon said he was having difficulty telling Sky from Lepoard riders in Paris Nice the other day, so was I
fizzwheel
10-03-11, 09:11 PM
Yep I had a few road bikes with friction shifters. I do like the Sti setup now though it is better.
Agree about the UCI, and about the black jersey's in the peleton, was watching Paris Nice today whilst recovering and was watching it at the weekend when Harmon was saying about it was difficult to identify the riders.
I dont like alot of the new kit. I have a HTC Columbia & Liqigas team jerseys, but the rest of my summer stuff is retro / old school jerseys.

10-03-11, 09:19 PM
HTC is too white for me and Liqigas too green :)
Normally ride out in Gewiss Ballan or blue Colombia jersey
Although I'm thinking about buying a green Gatorade or blue Reynolds top

I'm thinking I'd like that same Reynolds top it is very nice. I want the Peugeot Checker top as well, but my mate has that and at some point we'd both be wearing the same top and I'm not sure thats the done thing.

Or run it on the player and look at the elevation change at the end. If I#'ve read it properly when he hit me the bike jumped 8ft into the air...

Yep you can't have the same top as another rider, its an unwritten rule :)
Totally knackered myself today
Fancied doing my first 50 miler on the Boardman, but got it wrong in that I thought I'd have a stab at a few hills and choose a suitable route.
Turned out I chose the bloody wrong one! 3300ft of climbing, 42 miles in total but needed quite a few short stops when attacking the hills after about 25 miles. Basically, my quads arent quite up to the compact gearing and a 25% hill just yet so I need to work on getting that right. Slow and steady rather than running before I can walk.
I was cursing that last 17-18 miles mainly because it was up and down dale and some of the climbs were fairly long. I'd only done 25 mile distance with fairly flat rides (around 1000ft climbing) so bit off more than I could chew.
Couple of days rest at least now as I'm busy this weekend and working Monday. Might hit the road again Tuesday/Wednesday and get the 50 miler in.

Thats quite a big jump, especially with the extra hills :p
Build it up gently, then once the weather improves it'll be much easier
Ok, finally getting back on the bike mainly for triathlon training, but want a better bike...my limit is about £1k, so what are the best ones for this sort of money?
I have had a look at:
Planet X Carbon (SRAM Rival)
Focus Cayo
Don't really know what I am looking at though so over to you experts.

What are you riding now ? You might find you get just as good a result in spending a abit of money on your current bike, wheelset is always a good thing to upgrade.
I'd add to your list something from Ribble, alot of bike for not much money and they do do a model in your price range, mate has just bought one and is very pleased with it.
Also look at something from the Boardman range from Halfords, just dont get halfords to set it up. Buy it from them and take it away to your LBS and get them to do the build.
I have got the Planet X Carbon with Ultegra - a great ride, very light, stiff frame.
Any chance you could squeeze another £300 from anywhere - Planet X are chucking these out for £1300 at the moment ;-)

Anybody watch the Paris - Nice today. I cant remember the name of the stage winner, but how he stayed on when he lost his back wheel going across that zebra crossing close to the finish is beyond me. Awesome bike control or just lucky. I reckon I'd have been on the floor.
Been to the LBS today, who have declared my bike a write off, with all the damage they had a quick look at the frame and said its knackered.
So goodbye faithful Van Nic you served me well.

A bit yes, I know what I'm doing now and am not faced with riding a frame that I dont trust anymore.
Had a chat with one of the sales guys about what I want and another drool over the Look I've been looking at
He said it would be a decent upgrade from what I had, the only caveat that the geometry might not suit my body shape, but theres plenty of other options as it would be easier to tell you what they dont stock, rather than list what they do !

I have a report from the bike shop saying my bike is BER and a price to replace it with something of equivalent spec of £2300.
Fingers crossed the process goes smoothly. When the guy from the insurance company asked me what happend and I told him. He said oh dear. I then told him the police were prosecuting the driver, he said oh dear again, then I told him that the driver had admited fault at the scene he said oh dear again...
Will keep updating this thread if nobody minds, just to keep a track of when I spoke to whom etc etc.

This?
I have just got one of those, done about 180km on it so far and really like it. However, for triathlon it is too relaxed a geometry, it is intended as more of a sportive bike and so has a much more gentle riding position.
For Triathlon, a Time Trial (TT) type bike is more what you should be looking at - like this? http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/bikebuilder.asp?action=GenerateConstructor&part=BBRIBBLEDEDATT&sub=conf_BBTTC&bike=1

I dont like dedicated TT bikes they just look wrong to me, particularly where the seat tube is curved around the rear wheel, the lines of the bike look wrong.
That spesh isnt nice either. but apparently is faster in trials, with riders going faster for the same amount of watts generated compared to the Tarmac that they pro's are currently riding.
I think my mind is made up. This is pretty much what I am going to end up with, with either 105 or ultergra and I am swaying towards ultegra at the moment, But would have black saddle and bar tape. White is a bitch to keep clean

f*cks sake.
I thought I'd look into some insurance cover for me and the bikes. Recent events made me think that its finally time I did something about it.
So I put the Fixie in value £500, then I put in what I think the look I might get will probably cost say £4000.
Insurance preimum is more than the insurance on the GSXR is. £451 next time tells me cyclists should have insurance they are going to get a mouthfull...
Yes, blooming expensive. I've got the Wilier listed on my home contents as a specific item, I couldn't afford to replace that if it got nicked, the others wouldn't be such a problem.

Todays very short ride, after nearly two weeks since my last ride it took me a while to get going.
Its getting to that tricky time of year in knowing what to wear, not enough and get cold, too much and overheat. I stopped and took my under helmet cap off, plus my thin overshoes. I still had too much on my top half and I reckon I could have worn shorts today

LP check out my max HR :)

Yep know what you mean about clothing. Past two weeks it has been shorts with thin tights over, overshoes, long sleeve jersey and base layer. Waterproof/windproof in pocket if I get cold (needed two weeks ago due to wind chill) with a thermal headband. Works ok for me as I sweat like a fat lass dancing when on the bike anyway! Dunno what I'll do as it warms up though, will be caught between summer and winter kit.
and your maxHR.... madness!

I'm in my 3/4's two baselayers and a jersey today. Was freezing this morning, but been to see my friend at lunchtime and its lovely here. Like Mavic, I reckon I could have been in shorts today.
my dad has just splashed out on a CUBE (i think) with Dura Ace, so am going to hold off buying a new bike just in case his Orbea comes my way.
Got on my bike to work today, first time since last year 11.35 miles in 40 mins. Didn't use my ipod and found out just how noisy my bike really is...
Where is the best place to buy inner-tubes, oh and what ones do I need? Tyre says 700 x 25, I think.

You can go to you Local Bike Shop (LBS) for tubes, price hardly comes into it at >£5 a pop. 700Cx25 is the tyre size and most road tubes will fit that, 23 or 25 being the most common tyre sizes for tubed tyres.
If you cannot get to the bike shop then any online retailer will have them.

Depends where you're based. Decathlon are pretty cheap, if there's one near you

How about these?

I ordered two as I can't find my spare inner tube anywhere! They seem reasonable.
What pressure is everyone running their tyres at?

H'mm good price I think, although I should have also said go to Halfrauds.
Go by what it says on the tyre wall, lower the psi by a bit if its wet. But I never bother too much with this

Well its says 125 psi, so pump tyres up to that pressure.

110 in the front 100 psi in the rear. If the roads a bit harsh that I'm riding over I might drop the pressure in the front to 100 as well as I find it helps reduce the road buzz up through the bars.
The conti's GP4000s I usually run, go up to 125psi ( I think ) I've never run them that high, 110 psi can be uncomfortable enough.

Managed 41 miles today with an average speed of 15.2 mph. Not great, but all of this was in the little ring.
Bit puzzling as the previous day I'd managed 15.4 mph for 20 miles, I'd thought my avarege would have been a lot less for double the milage.
Manage to keep my max pulse down to 182 and an average of 162.
Got my clothing spot on today 3/4 bibs long sleeved jacket, wasn't too hot or cold.
Although I misjudged the wind direction and it was pretty much a headwind home, which was hard work

Do these expensive bikes you all have use tubeless tyres?, just wondering :D

My Shimano wheels use Tubeless tyres :smt116

thought they would, last bike i had, had the tube repaired about 10 times lol, was a while ago ;)

I still use inner tubes as the pukka tubeless tyres are feckin expensive and the AA aren't going to come out and fix a puncture on a pushbike :D
But there is a kit to make ordinary rims run normal tyres as well, cyclocross riders use this as they can run lower pressures and less risk of punctures.

I got my new jersey today, red so it matches the bike:cool: Adjusted the tyre pressures as Fizz described then went for a ride which about 15 miles really nice out. I was wearing my bib tights and s/s jersey that seemed enough.
I'm going to try going for a longer ride tomorrow, I'm stuggling with stamia at the moment I get tried quite easy thought I think that is related to a long term injury.

One day at a time MM, I only returned to cycling last year after a 10 year lay off. I'm tired today after yesterday's ride.
Shame as its a lovely day again

Err aren't Fixie's meant to have one fixed gear, I can see at least 2 derailiuers :p
It could have been made even lighter with only using front brake and no handlebar tape :p
Still nice carbon bits & bobs :smt080

I didn't even notice the gears at first and just assumed it must be a fixie at that weight!
Some nice bling, but it is butt ugly.
