Thanks mate.

At that price I wouldn't complain
I had my bike service at Swift Cycles (near Liverpool St.) over Xmas. Got my bike bike and it feels better than brand new, they have done an awesome job!
When I picked it up I asked if it was set up right for me and the bloke helped me out a bit but suggested that I do a proper fitting session at some point. He did do some alterations to the bike bringing the saddle forward as far as possible then as a result raising the saddle height.
He did also say that the saddle should be further forward, but couldn't be as it was lay-back (or something similar)...fill in the gaps if you have a vague idea of what I am on about.
My current saddle is ripped and needs replacing so the question is:
What saddle should I go for?
...and do I need to find one that can accomodate being brought further forward.
I am keen to get my positioning right as I want to do more running this year, I explained this to the man in the shop and head said that getting the position spot of would make my commute more efficient making more use of my hamstrings thus leaving my quads less knackered. Does that make sense?

You've got a lay back or set back seat post.
Theres a thread on bikeradar about it here
http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40020&t=12850243
If it were me, I'd go and get that bike fit and then choose your saddle once you have the position right.
As for recommendations, way way to personal a thing. I've got a Fizik Arione on both my bikes and it is the most comfortable saddle I've ever had.
Liz has just replaced the generic Giant saddle on her Defy for a Specialised one that she says has improved the comfort, but hers in a ladies specific saddle so no good for you. Although I was impressed with the Speciliased BG fit service / measure they did for her in the LBS so that might be worth a try if theres somewhere local to you...
maviczap
08-01-13, 04:28 PM
Another Fizik user her, although mine is the Aliante, as that's what their 'Spine Concept test' recommended
As Fizz says its a personal thing, so what we recommend might not suit you
I'd tried a Specialized Phenom, but it was thinly padded, and I didn't get on with it. I also had another Fizik saddle the Antares, and I didn't get on with that. I've got an unkown Specialized on my winter bike, which is also pretty comfortable.
So its the Aliante for me, just the base model, not the fancy carbon railed one.
I rode a whole week in the Alps in September, longest ride was 128km and to be honest I never noticed my saddle once giving me any grief.
Try the Fizik concept and see what it recommends?
http://www.fizik.com/spineconcept/
I did that earlier and thought I would be an Antares out of the ones there.
Thing is two days into the minor adjustments and I think I may actually have noticed a difference in comfort, which is making the fit session sound like a good investment.
They sell Fizik saddles too and have demo seats, so that could be an idea to do it there too but I guess I would pay a premium in there.
maviczap
08-01-13, 07:29 PM
Do the demo saddles, it'll save buying one, only to find you don't like it.
If you like it, perhaps they'll knock something off the price?
Gone are the days when saddles were cheap enough to buy and try.
When I started most of us had Rolls saddles
I found the antares online for £59.99 so that'll be next month I think!
fizzwheel
08-01-13, 07:34 PM
Ditto go with the Demo saddle and see how you get on.
oh and a non-lay back seat post too...so that's going to cost a few bob!

I have a Fizik Aliente but it made me a bit numb whereas my specialised avatar just hurts my sit bones. Suppose I could try the aliente again and see if i can get on with it, they get great reviews but dont have the pressure relieving groove in them. Defo going to get a full bike fit in the spring, i think my seat maybe too far back as i use a 80mm stem and the bike came with a 120mm one.

My Aliante has got the pressure relieving groove, I know some of the other Aliante models don't.
Here's mine (I've got 2), which is the Aliante Versus
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/fizik-aliante-versus-saddle-with-kium-rails/
So has my unknown Specialized
My Specialized Phenom also hurt my sit bones, as I don't have much padding in that area.
There is a saddle swap section on Bike Radar, saves buying if someone has got a saddle you want

How easy would it be to turn my Focus Cayo into a single speed bike? How expensive?
Or should I just sell the cayo and buy a fixie?
Not sure how much I really need the gears, I suspect I use them because they are there and as I am a bit of a kit killer, perhaps removing the components might make fiscal sense.

I got a fixie from Tredz - specialized langster £400 fantastic bike, they even fitted brakes free of charge!
I have done some of our hillier rides in essex no problem - although it does come with a pretty big gear standard. They are cheap though!
fizzwheel
20-02-13, 07:21 PM
I like my fixie to look at, but to ride it not so much. I live in a reasonably hilly area and it gives my legs a proper work out, but after a winters worth of commuting on it I've had enough of it.
I'm being unfair I'm comparing it with my LOOK and I shouldnt...
As for less maintenance, IMHO only slighty less. It still needs cleaning and looking after, albeit the drive chain takes less time to clean, but it still needs doing.
I'd rather have a geared bike and have the extra maintenance than a single speed, particularly if the single speed was my only bike...
Other cycling news, My garmin detatched itself from its mount on the way home tonight and by the time I realised what had happened it had been run over by a car... bye bye Edge 305 you served me welll...

I made a single speed up by fitting one of these to a spare wheel & a frame I had spare
Uses the shimnao freehub, and just space it to get the correct chainline

Yep time for a new one, my 305 is in several pieces and also flat as a pancake. I think a car ran it over before I could get back to pick it up off the road.
Think I'm going to get a another Garmin as its been much better than my Polar was. Looking at the 500 I think as it'll work with all my existing cadence sensors etc. But then I saw the 800 / 810 on wiggle...
maviczap

Yep, I keep holding off buying a 500, I've seen a few on BR
I want an 810 after last years Alps trip, as I know the 500's & my 305 don't work very well in the valleys

Yes, that's the other issue I have, as I don't need the maps that often, but it would come in handy for foreign trips.
I can't be bothered with cadence sensors & I don't wear my HR much, I know when its hard going :D
Wait til Halfrauds sell them off cheap to get the new models in stock. They were before Christmas
Open source maps can be downloaded for the Garmin and they're good. If you need a link let me know?

Fizz - read about your Garmin in the other place. Tough luck fella :-(
Yep, I keep holding off buying a 500, I've seen a few on BR
I have a 500 and use it on both bikes. Have speed/cadence sensor on both and easy to set up/swap between bikes. I like the 500 a lot, and since I've never had a 'puter with maps I don't miss it.
As for single-speed, been riding my Genesis Flyer all winter (except in snow/sub-zero temps) to and from work. Got to say that I do feel fitter. The drive-train is holding up well and it's a certainly a livelier ride than my geared road bike. Great fun, and the steel frame is sooooo comfy :-)
Not ridden it fixed yet - that is for another day....... and pedals with toe-clips rather than SPDs
maviczap
21-02-13, 07:34 PM
Yep, I've got a 305, and it does what I want it to do. Same as you, I've got a mount on each bike
The reason I've not bought a 500, even though the prices were really good, was that Rob our guide in the Pyrenees had one, and it wasn't collecting all the data. Same problem as mine, as it wasn't 'seeing' the satellites in the valley's.
The latest ones, the 510 & 810 can pick up more satellites, so should be better.
So I'm going to hold off buying one until I've seen some reviews on them.
I can't fault my 305, its better than all the computers I've ever had, no setting it up and tracks where I've been, up hill and down dale :)
Saw an advert for a 510 last night. Touch-screen. Very nice :-)
Can't justify an upgrade though :-(

I bought a 500 from the LBS in the end. Looked at the 800 / 810 but the price difference is way to much just for the maps which I'm not convinced I'd use that much.
Got £30 off the retail price as they did me a good deal so happy with that.

Jabba, fixed is amazing. The improvement in smoothness and "Oneness" with the bike over a single speed is the same again as single speed over geared. Plus it feels safer knowing I always have a brake that works, no matter how wet it gets.

Ran over a cat yesterday, little bugger hopped up onto a wall, I started to brake, but to late he jumped into the road in front of me. Stopped and then ran into my path. despite what Liz describes as some serious bike skills, I ran him over, right square across his back with my front wheel. Which tipped me off into the road.
Slid along on my ****, thigh, and right arm. Still clipped to the bike... have a nice set of bruises and gravel rash, worst bit was I was on my LOOK before I had even stopped sliding I was looking at it for damage.
Cat ran off so have no idea how the little feline is. Bike is ok, all cosmetic, to put it back to minit

Those arent the red mountains :)
I'm no expert or doctor.
In the first one your heart rate looks ok if you are working reasonably hard, the second chart it appears your heart rate is over 200, I've not seen that in any of your previous stuff the average HR has always been around 150-160 similar to mine when I'm working reasonably hard. I'd check the battery in my HRM or have a word with my doctor.
HRMs can give strange readings if the contact with the skin isn't good.
My Garmin has a chest band type and I read that giving the sensors a lick when putting it on improve the contact/reliability. It does seem to work.
Not sure what caused the readings above but a change of clothing seemed to sort it out. The graph was from last year.
Only just changed the original battery last week
Agree with the wetting the chest strap as it makes for more consistent readings.

Probably a tail wind on your ride home :p
Heart rate is a funny old thing. I know of two places where my HR monitor will go crazy and shoot up over 200 bpm. It happened to a Polar & Garmin HR monitors.
Its obviously some form of electrical interference.
But as to individual HR's, even though I'm 51, my HR can still go over 190 bpm, when I'm fully fit and charging up a hill at full pelt. When climbing in the mountains it'll regularly top 170 - 180 bpm.
Its all down to my genetics I guess

Exactly...... and as you say, fitness. Age is also a factor. HRmax drops gradually with age but by how much varies from person to person.
I'm a couple of years younger than you and hit the wall at anything much over 180-185 for short bursts. Okay at 175-180 when climbing for a fair while, better below 170 which is what I aim for.
You must be fitter than me!

Not at the moment :(
I wore my HR strap in the Pyrenees where my avg on the Tourmalet was 159bpm, and I was able to adjust my pace by watching my HR. So it was useful to avoid blowing up.
But I didn't wear it in the Alps last year, I just rode on how I felt and I didn't have any problems either.
It would have been interesting to see what my HR was on the start ramps of Alpe d'Huez and at the top, as these were to two places I was at max HR for sure

Finally found my way to this thread :)
Im on my second week into this here thing you call "cycling" feeling like a full on roadie now as I pass a flat barred bike and mentally thumb my nose to their inferior equipment lol.
So today's the first day I've felt the benifit, a hill I've been intimidated by before starting riding and then despising whilst I rode it was today tackled with reasonable comfort. A new PB for it on Strava which I'm loving for so many reasons the main one been it gives you a pat on the back for putting some extra effort in. I've also already got a 6th place of 120 on a small section as I head into work... Room for improvement ;)

That is very shiny. I'd love a titanium frame, but cannot justify it with the amount of riding i am doing at the moment. I'll need to dig my summer roadie out my parents loft soon though.

Neither can I at the moment, but that's mostly down to the weather & lack of objectives for this year.

Yeah, I have two fairly big objective for this year, and neither are cycling related. But soon again hopefully.

Summer bike coming out today. :D Hope I don't get blown off with my 50mm rims!
Jesus that is my windiest ride ever I think! Hardest 25 miles for a long time! The wind made passing gaps in hedges 'interesting' and I could not hold 10mph into it.
Summer bike felt great!:)
Sent from my phone.

The wind, last two weeks just feels like no matter what direction I ride in, I'm riding into a headwind.
I think this is the 6th or 7th week that the wind has been strong. I dont have deep section rims but I still struggle to hold onto the bike sometimes.
Although I did get a nice scalp last night. Bradley Wiggins wanna be in Sky kit on a sky replica Pinnarello. Don't think he appreciated being overtaken and then dropped by me on my cross bike :-)

Last 2 weeks? At least a 2 months of Easterlies here, or seems like it.
Yes, even on my last ride I diverted to avoid the worst of the wind through the lanes, its about time it warmed up enough for shorts & short sleeves.
With my lack of ballast, I get blown about quite a bit

Ha Ha ace, keep it up Fizz.
If you're going to have all the kit, then you have to ride like them ;)

I have plenty of team kit. It was whole matching Pinnarello and Sky outfit, even down to Sky socks, coupled with a complete lack of ability to go up hill that had me chuckling. Fair play to him at least he was out there cycling

Yes, so do I.
But its always a bit obscure stuff, not high profile stuff like Sky kit.
Closest I came to mainstream stuff was wearing Banesto stuff when Indurain was king.

The only modern jersey I have is a LiquiGas one that I got in a Wiggle sale a couple of year back. The rest is all 90's stuff.

The PDM and Panasonic jerseys have gone as they didnt fit me. I have the other more blue version of the Mercatone Uno kit as well now.

I'd seen this pic before Fizz, I had the blue Mercatone Uno kit, but sold that a while ago. I also had the PDM & Panasonic jersey's you have. I can't remember if I had a white Carerra jersey, but I've still got a blue windproof jacket in the denim Carerra colours.
I'll dig mine out for a pic
Mike, the gale force winds have arrived here today, I'm not going out until the afternoon, when the winds are meant to drop, as things like dustbins are flying around here

Fences and walls blown down on our development... nice.
Fortunately Thursday is a motorcycle commute (football in the evening) but I'm not looking forward to riding in this tomorrow. Oh and I think I need to sort out my riding gear, its not too bad in a morning despite the wind breaker acting like a huge air brake. On the way home though, the climbs are bigger and the legs are tired so the wind breaker needs to go.

Welcome to the dark side Owenski. Like bikes, the right amount of kit is always N + 1, where N is the amount you have now.

Loving the Z team kit. that was the era I first started watching cycling. Lemond's third win is really the first tour I remember.
Aldi (http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/25791.htm) and Lidl are your friend when it comes to cycling kit usually their shorts are poor though, dhb from Wiggle (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/cycle/shorts/) are good value.

Haha that's great!
Hoping you guys on here can help out btw - got some SKS mud guards for my Trek 1.2 and only tried fitting them very quickly but it seemed like the bolts provided were too large to fit in the mounting points at the bottom of the forks. Felt a bit like it wanted to cross-thread so though I'd best ask before ploughing ahead and ruining my forks!
Can anyone shed any light?
Cheers!
