Well, I just got my flight dates for SA and I'm not leaving until the 21st September
Which means I can do this with my boss who's also a bit of a keen cyclist:
http://www.sunseaandcycling.com/hills-killer-information.aspx
The 14 hills one, ~55miles IIRC, orienteering and all
Any advice / technique / condolences to offer? ;)

Looking forward to the 14 hills now...

Well, rad am Ring was great, will do a mini trip report to go on this thread later in the week.
So if I fit fat slicks to my mtb rims are they any more prone to punctures than a normal tyre ? and can anyone recommend me some good tyres, Im not too up on the cycling scene just yet but want to use the bike for a duathlon next year and also use my commute to work as a training session albiet a short one at 15 miles.
Thanks
Stew

No, no more than a knobbly tyre, in fact as they run at higher pressure then they should be a bit better.
As for brands, then depends on your budget. I've got some semi slick Michelins, but Schwalbe seem to have a bigger range on Ebay.
If its only one race, then don't spend the earth on tyres. There are some budget slick/semi slicks on Ebay, they'll be better than knobblies
So if I fit fat slicks to my mtb rims are they any more prone to punctures than a normal tyre ?
No more prone that mtb tyres model for model. Some tyres have puncture protection built in.
Friends that have fitted more road-biased tyres to their mtbs swear by Schwalbe Marathon Plus (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=24542). Grip well, last a long time and have amazing puncture protection
Cool, Ill have a look around then, thanks pal :D

M4 FSR XC Pro frame, Fox Triad shock / Reba SL forks and maybe some hope M4 brakes
It was a bargain, honestly...

Hmm, scratch that
Turns out the seller is a c*nt who'd renege on an agreed sale for the sake of an extra pair of tenners selling parts separately
Oh well, the search continues for a light, cheap FS XC frame / forks
Perhaps I should start scouring eBay for some upstanding sellers who aren't tw*ts...

I have one of these frames (not this exact one), a lot lighter compared to my old Raleigh MTB

Just swapped parts over, has disc mounts if I wanted to upgrade.
Got some carp forks from Decathlon, which I'll change at some point, but even they had disc mounts to

I haven't been out on it in ages :( and currently can't find the motivation to use it to commute to work, 5 miles all up hills! When I have used it for work would take me 40 mins to get here and 25 mins to get home.
I want to get some tryes for off roading as currently they would not stand up to anything other than a dirt track!

I was not expecting the chain to go if I'm honest. Not when its a £40 job. But not bovered, free replacement, just means don't get to ride tommorow.
Then on weekend need to look at fitting my road tyres Girth gave me some time ago.

Impessive improvement in muscle strength, to be able to snap chains Drew, your legs must look like this?

24-08-10, 06:37 PM
Nope, my legs not looking like that!!!! I think it was a deffective chain. What suprised me, is that it didn't go on the split link, went on a standard riveted part.
maviczap
24-08-10, 06:40 PM
Could have been a piece of stone flicked up between the plates which did for the link, or just a duff link in the chain. Unusual though for SRAM

Ouch... had a chain snap on me once while sprinting... :( one moment I'm pedalling like mad, the next moment I'm dragging on the tarmac, hearing the noise of metal scraping and watching my computer thingy happily skipping up and down a few inches from my nose. I just remember thinking "wtf are you doing there? ", then "erm I'm sure I'm not supposed to be lying on the tarmac in the middle of the road..." quickly followed by "ouch, this flippin' hurts like ****". Still carry the marks on my elbow and right hip.
And you're still complaining about the warranty? ;) Mine was a middle / top of the range Shimano thingy, btw.

Bargain if you're in the market for SPD-SL pedals:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=47601
They are rebadged Ultegra SPD-SL pedals. Same weight, same RRP, etc, but anodised black and renamed PD-R670
Tried these out for the first time yesterday evening. Same shoes as I'd used with SPDs and what a difference. Much more "solid" feeling, probably due to the larger surface area of the pedal and cleat. More comfortable and just as easy to use, too :-)
Well worth the investment.

That's why I don't like the road SPD's, its a bit like pedaling on a chestnut and why I haven't changed from my standard sized Look pedal to the smaller Keo version.
Might be alright to use a small pedal, if you're using super stiff carbon soled shoes

Oh dear part deax...
Somehow I've been convinced to keep the old Mongoose as a daily hack and build myself a new bike
Parts bought so far:
Kona Four '08 frame w/ Rockshox Monarch shock
Rockshox Recon Race 100mm fork
Hayes HFX9 f/r w/ 200mm rotors
XT f/r mechs
SLX shifters
Deore crank/cassette
Alex Ace rims on Shimano/KK hubs
All parts either BNIB or hardy used - only the seat / handlebars / stem will be coming from the old bike until I work out what geometry I need and get new ones
Total cost ~£600

I'm tinkering with the idea of buying a cyclocross frame and forks for the winter. I'll swap most of my bits off my training bike, but having a bike I can use off road or on road with full mudguards
Works out a lot cheaper than a new MTB

It's amazing how far the tech has come since my last bike, a Rocky Mountain from '94 or '95. The fork on the Trek, whilst still a "budget" model is soooo plush and comes with remote lockout on the bars. The frame is hydroformed into odd shapes at the headtube making a super-stiff frame. It accelerates like a cat with a firework tied to it's bum!
Only one problem,
I'm really, really unfit!
Oh well, time to get to work on the spare tyre!

Looking good, what kind of brakes have you on the bike? The remote lock out is very useful feature makes it a lot easy to flick it on and off...the one thing I found is I should pull on brakes too hard they stop very quickly!

The Vuelta de España began on Saturday in Seville with a team time trial. Yesterday they headed from Seville to finish in Marbella. How strange to see the riders heading down the famous Ronda Road which as some of you know is a famed biker route that I play on a lot.
I tried to plan with precision, gauging the point they were on that road, to how long it would take them and myself to get to the same point so that I could see them go by.
I could not have timed it better! As I arrived the first Police outriders came by,then some more, then TV motorbikes, a Shimano mechanics car and then within a minute lots of lights and motorbikes heading the front of the peloton. The 4 riders that had a close to 4 minute lead before I left the house, had now been caught. This stretch of road now was perfect and flat. The entire field came past in a "whoosh" followed by the massive number of back up vehicles. Just seconds of action to see,but a great experience.

Quite the strangest start to a grand tour I've ever seen, apart from a similar test at the start of the Tour of Poland a couple of years ago.
Yes, they woosh past you on the flat and even when climbing the mountains they still woosh past you.
I wished the Vuelta was moved back to its original month the calender, as its never been the same since it moved to September, but I'd still like to go and see it in the mountains, but never any of the flat stages

I'm reading that book at the moment. I'm really enjoying it so far.
I agree about the System U Jersey. I had a System U water bottle when I was a teenager. I loved that 1989 Tour, was on the edge of my seat every single day. I always thought Fignon was a bit strange / aloof. Reading the book has changed my opinion of him.

Cycle to work is feeling the recession

Unfortunately it looks like people on existing schemes will also be affected.
Woohoo - got my letter from HR today telling me that the Planet X Carbon road bike I got 3 years ago is now mine with nothing else to pay - the £1000 bike cost me about £520 interest free over 3 years.
Double woohoo - just spotted a message posted on our intranet today  from HR stating that although the scheme rules have changed, they have agreed with HMRC that this will only apply within our company to vouchers ordered after 4th September 2010 (i.e. TOMORROW!). I have just therefore placed an order for another £1000 voucher ;):p
Looks like I will be getting a Boardman Hardtail Pro when the voucher comes through in October

I did my first bike ride in about 3-4 years today for Leukemia research today. 26 miles around Shoeburyness, was on a rented mountain bike (as I'm not getting my cycle to work thingy till the end of the month) and managed it in a modest time of about 3 hours 45 minutes. I now feel completely dead, legs are aching and my **** is sore.
However, I feel good for it and now realise how easy my 6 mile ride to work is going to be :D

Funnily enough, I've just worn out my third set (well, rear) of those. I think they're a very good tyre. The visible tread pattern around the centre wears away pretty quickly but there's still plenty of rubber left when it does. However, that does make it dificult to spot a tyre about to wear out (which is how I lost my last rear - punctured due to virtually no rubber left!)
As it happens I've replaced them with City Contact this time as the Sport Contact was was out of stock. Still Conti though, as I think they're the best tyre make out there for road use on MTB 26"ers.

Seems I'm not the only one!:D

Just bought myself a Crud Catcher tonight for the downtube. With the weather getting rubbish found I'm getting wet grit flinging all up my chest and face!!!! lol.
TLW....nice bike. Makes mine look like a kiddies first bike. lol
By the way that isn't muddy though. Could do much better.

Ha, give me a chance, it's not been wet for a while here... Plus it's going to take a lot of mud to hide that lairy purple paint job...;)
Funnily enough, this cost me roughly the same as I paid for my old Amasa Comp about 5yrs ago, I reckon I'll be building my own from now on, looking over the spec of the old 2008 Four Supreme it's comparable but roughly 1/3-1/4 the cost...

If you're not mud plugging you could give the Schwalbes a try - the Racing Ralph absolutely FLIES!! - it's a bit lightweight treadwise for the front so paired with a Nobby Nic I reckon they're fantastic...

Depending on the dog owners around your area, wet grit might be the least of your concerns! Been there, done that... twice. NOT fun.

Been doing that for 12 years now... always found the cost of building a bike to your spec lower than buying from the big manufacturers. That said, Cannondales and Treks still tickle my fancy... a lot! (I know, talk about overpriced stuff...)

It will help, but occasionally you'll get a curve ball and because you won't be expecting it you'll have your mouth open!!!!!!;)

It's even worse when it happens, and 30 mins later, after you've wiped it off the best you can and you've all but forgotten the fact, you reach for the bottle in the holder on the down tube (12 years ago the CamelBaks weren't as widespread as they are now...) and yours fingers find something soft and squidgy... :-dd

I'm currently using bottle and cage and that has really made me think I need to save for a camelback. Can we suggest nice things please!!!

Camelbak Mule works for me, lots of water, OS map, fleece and basic tools, spare tube, phone keys etc. Bought mine a few years back, don't know if they still make them
The water pouch is a PITA though, needs good cleaning and storing either dry or in the freezer or it'll mould up, too much effort for a short commute, but nice to have 3l of ice cold water all day:cool:

Not sure what to do on that front.....was thinking using cage and bottle for commute and then getting one of these as cheapish for fun riding when I don't need to carry much...

or
http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/rockrider-color-2-34962007/ as 2litre
Main reason as use my knox backpack for commuting as carry clothes, lunch, towel etc. Don't want to buy an expensive pack.

Well cycling was going well for me about 12 miles a day round trip to and from work that was until Thursday night when I got knocked off my road bike...
I have ended up with a road rash and brusing to right leg/knee, a big ish bruise to my chest where the drop bars went into and another on my shoulder. So a bit sore, went to get checked out was told I just missed my ribs from the bruise I was told had it hit my ribs I would have broken them, well I guess it could have been worse. Need to get my bike fixed as well, not sure if I'm more ****ed about my injuries to add to what is growing list already have messed up shoulder, arm ect or the fact its a new bike...
Okay so who wants to see some infected road rash:D

Didn't realise there were a few MTBers on the site, some nice rides on here :)
Here's mine, found it in M&P Cycles in Swansea when they were still trading. They had reduced the frame down to half price because of a scratch on the top tube, couldn't believe my luck, only went in to have a gander and ended up walking out with my dream bike!

Only got back into cycling last year after a ten year break (when I bought my first SV650!). Bought an MTB and loved being back on the trails - burn a lot more calories when there's no v-twin pushing you along!!:p
I bought a GoPro camera to use on the SV1K a while back but its pretty good on the bike's as well...here's a few clips of some of my antics on and off road...
Roadbike is a 2010 Lapierre Audacio 400 TP - great bike which is more than good enough for me
MTB is a 2009 Trek 6000 Disc - hardtail which again easily copes with my skillset on the trails!!
