Silver, black, red:- my choices
White is impoosible to keep clean
Gold is so 1970's :-)
I have white on the mtb so it will be red on the van :) That said I did fancy the gold but I need all the help I can get at the moment. Goldie looking chain for that pimped up ride next ;)

If the weights are correct as claimed, they are pretty light too

This seems like a bargain. Is this for a pair of wheels or just the rear wheel??
At 1492g a pair they are very light
I'm under the impression its for both as they say wheelset. I'll let you know when they arrive
Yep, bargain. So much so I just bought a pair!
I went for the gold, to go on my black bike. Going for the Yamaha R1 look :p
Without even knowing for sure I picked the elite 30s assuming that's a 30mm deep rim and they would be the 1510 gram ones? Either way they look pretty good. Cheers for the link Pookie!

Yip I bought a pair too. It's stupid money for a wheelset with figures like this. I mean I was saving up for Fulcrum Racing 3 wheels which are £300 and 1550 grams. These are only £99 including delivery and are lighter at a shade under 1500 grams.
Incredible value. They also get a good review on road cc website.

Ordered, same reason as Ramjam, plus I need to get an 11 speed rear wheel when put the upgrades on my Wilier . These are half the price of the Ultegra rear wheel I was going to buy
They look great value shame I've just bought new wheels, I would have gone for the Pave's I changed to a wider rim on my winter Aluminium bike and the difference in comfort is very noticeable using 25mm tyres ...I wont be going back to narrower rims.

I think I'd get killed if I took any real interest in these wheels. Besides I want to check out the weight of what I'm getting before I start up grading
STUPIDLY I told the gaffer how much I'd paid for the Sensa, timing was bad, she hadn't drunk enough wine to not care.... But she did admit that it's my money.
On the way home now for a snottery cycle in the cold.

Weight saving on rims and tyres is good. When spinning it accounts for more than the actual weight saving due to rotating mass / centrifugal force being lighter. Saving 250g in rims / tyres is actually equivalent of saving something like 1000g for the energy you need to move forwards when up to a certain speed, about 20 to 30mph I think.
Yep I will be taking 300g off my current wheelset, for a quarter of the price I was considering paying in the summer.
Only thing is, this could lead me to spending the money upgrading to 11spd, still not sure if it's worth the expense.
at least the wheels will support the 11sp cassette ;). I'm interested in the psychological aero effect and also the increase in avg speed due to red coloured rims. My bike will have more bling than lewis hamilton's goldie chain :)
UPS have the wheels , shame the weekend is a bit moist :(

Just replace the groupset once its worn out. You dont need to change the chainset (unless thats worn out) it will work fine with 11speed.
I found that upgrading 105 to 11speed was well worth the expense.
usually plenty of new or nearly new 11speed stuff on bike radar, which won't break the bank.
interestingly its been reported that Shimano stuff will be reduce by up to 40% in the USA. Isn't going to happen here, but maybe it might be cheap enough to buy from there? I doubt it, as you'll get stung for duty/vat plus PO handling fees. But if you take a holiday?

Ah I was in Florida last year but wont be happening again for a while.
Hmm good to know I wouldn't need to replace the chainset, assuming the front derailleur would be fine as well? Maybe worth changing the cassette and rear derailleur, oh and shifter. Would need to be SRAM though or it would look weird :)

Don't know about SRAM, but with Shimano you change the shifters, chain, cassette, front and rear mechs.
The shifters have different cable pull ratio's, so old 10 speed mechs won't work with 11 speed shifters.

That old chestnut...
Rotational inertia...
Steady state... all else (frictional losses, aero, rolling resistance etc) equal light wheels require the same power to turn at a constant speed.
Acceleration... all else equal, lighter wheels require less power to accelerate.
Climbing is where the latter is felt the most... if the rider isn't smooth on the delivery climbing can become a series of micro accelerations which sucks up a lot of power. Speed ripple might only be a few cm/s (bike computers don't have the resolution to measure this), but it is a lot when it is happening 180+ times per minute and on each pedal stroke the rider is having to put back the energy into rotating masses (there's a squared relationship in there) (plus forward energy) lost on the last that could well be the equivalent of pushing a handful of extra kilos up a hill... certainly more than just lifting the 200-400g difference in wheel weight.
Light wheels or a very smooth delivery or both win... bottom line, it is the rider who is the culprit. It is something to work on even though the ripple will never be completely eliminated.
The same micro accelerations apply on the flat btw, however the effect is far less pronounced than when working against gravity.
So yes and no, but not quite what you said... Lighter wheels only have an advantage accelerating which might be happening more frequently than people realise.
Adam Ef
12-02-16, 10:41 AM
But now we know that gravity works in waves.. I'm working on a new hill climb technique only putting the effort in inbetween the waves when it will have the most effect. : )
Adam Ef
12-02-16, 10:46 AM
All riding is kind of acceleration though too, in as much as if you don't pedal then you slow and stop, so you're always trying to counteract that stopping effect, just not an acceleration from zero.
I definitely notice the effect of heavier tyres on 29er mountain bike.. same size wheels in theory as my road bike and rim weight is similar but requires much more to keep it going and get up to speed, and loads harder to climb with. Having said that the momentum of the heavy rubber when up to speed probably helps keep it rolling a fair bit on the flat, compared to 26" mountain bike which seems to stop dead if there's no pedalling.

Well this post should really go in gripe of the day.
Last week when I bought the bike I asked if they would deliver it to my parents house five minutes away, as I probably wouldn't be in.
I was denied this request because the bike was bought on finance (0%) and it had to be delivered to my home address.
Well I've just received notification that my bike has been delivered.... To a neighbour on a different Street that I hardly know... WTF!!!
I know Merlin aren't to blame but I've already sent them a snarky email complaining. I'm not happy in the slightest.
wheels arrived and they do indeed come as a pair... They really are light that you dont believe that there are any wheels in the box.
Tyres tubes and photo coming up

Let us know how the tyre fitting goes? Someone on FB is sending their set back they had such a mare fitting the tyres.
My wheels aren't here yet because they are being delivered by UPS. UPS have never yet managed to deliver me a package. I always have to go to the depot to get it, no matter how clear I make the delivery instructions.
Probably get them Monday...
The tyres were ok to get on, all finger work but I broke 2 cheapo levers getting them off the old wheels though. The rear hub sounds a bit rumbly when you spin it back wards may be it needs loosening up. Here is my new ride for 2016. Bar tape to change colour once I can decide what matches the wheels ;)
Yes I am short and it looks like a fisher price bike :)

My wheels arrived today, front spins really smooothly. I like the 30mm rim depth. I had some 50mm RS80's and they were dangerous in side winds, the 30mm's don't have the same issue, as I've got some Halo Road disc wheels which spin up nicely, but don't get affected by side winds. Plus I was never fast enough to get the 50mm's up to the sweet spot, whereas the 30mm's are easier to get to their sweet spot. Or so it seems.
Cycle show was a bit of a disapointment, not much to buy & less English builders there. No Condor stand, and no Colnago stand (unless I missed them).

I'd hope not... but then again, I've had my share of MTB bits (mostly bars, stems and posts) turn green.
It's been a good day. This afternoon I got a couple of sets of Columbus Max forks assembled in the jigs. Tomorrow I'll do the brazing, then I'll clean and finish them at my leisure during the week.
The forks are for a his and hers set of frames that came out of the jigs earlier in the week. They're built with Columbus tubing and Llewellyn 6 degree lug sets to pull a light touring trailer with the hitch integrated into the rear drops. Both will have bright silver Campy Athena 11X3 groups which always looks a treat on steel frames in just about any colour that isn't too dark.
The frames are similar to this:
http://www.llewellynbikes.com/HTML/LlewellynCrescendo.html
I also did a bit of shopping tonight for lugs, BB shells, crowns, tubing, ends and other materials for another eight frames. Frame building is a fun and not overly expensive hobby to keep me from mischief.

They've served as inspiration and I have similar goals... it just takes longer.
http://www.llewellynbikes.com/HTML/handlebar_stem.html
The stem lugs are a bit of an annoyance because of the shaping and cut outs... hearts... yuk! I need two plain points (not four) with no cut-outs to do my own thing... stylised Mars and Venus symbols. It's the same with BB shells and fork crowns which are rare enough for straight Max fork blades. I end up doing a lot of filling and filing before I can do anything with them.

Guys I need some advice and help.
I've been messing about with the new toy and the cassette is making some awful noises. When you spin the crank slowly you can see that the chain is running fine but there's one tooth on each turn that the chain is sitting proud to start off with then falling noisily into place. It's doing it on every gear.

first ride on the road and the wheels feel quick and nimble. Front end was a little twitchy but that could be the current setup. The red did make the bike go 0.5mph on average faster :).
The wheels arent as true as I'd expect from a new set so needs a little tweak. Conclusions are they are fun to ride, look shiney, not that harsh on the road.

Well I promised Maviczap a review of the Sensa Giulia Ultegra after the today's first ride.
The bike is a big step up from the Triban. I'm very pleased with it, Its a far more aggressive in its riding position, I put the two bikes together and the bars are about 6 cm lower and the frame is slightly smaller too but I'm far from cramped, I find it more comfortable in a way. I don't feel quite to stretched out and when I'm standing it feels miles better. Starting to wonder if the Triban is slightly to big.
The bike is or will be a whole lot quicker than the Triban once I get used to the 50/34 gearing (in a way I missed the granny 30 front on the climb up the steeper parts of the Tak-Ma-Doon Road)
The bar tape will probably be changed as its a little thin but the bike isn't as harsh I was lead to believe from the 'expert' reviews.
The biggest difference I noticed instantly was the brakes, they actually work and work in a big way I pulled a lovely stoppie when the Sora brakes would have just gradually slowed me down.
She has been washed and put back into storage until the better weather comes round, I won't use her again until I can wear the Louis Garneau shoes without freezing my feet off.

Go for it :-)
Haha I have really considered it, but if I do change the groupset and other bits I have then spent £800 on a bike that's meant to be quite cheap. And really it's fine and dandy as it is. I will do some other bits but wanna try and keep it under £500.

After 5 years the only original bits on my Tifosi are frame, forks, seatpost and mudguards ....these things happen!

He'll change it up soon. I mean he could sell the B'twin and almost pay for a groupset ;-)
I was talking bartape a few posts back has anyone got any experience with gel inserts like these (http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/sp/road-track-bike/h-bar-tape-fizik-bar-gel-2-technogel-set-4pcs/fizihbtp212000000000)?
Are they worth the money on top of buying better tape?

Those gel inserts work but they can make the bars feel a bit chunky.
I bought Bontrager gel tape with the bontrager gel pad inserts included too. With the inserts fitted under the gel tape the bars were way too chunky, so removed the gel inserts and been happy with just the Bontrager gel tape on it's own. I've been happy enough that I've used it on a few bikes since.
The Bontrager is non adhesive, rubber back sticks under tension, so easy to remove and rewrap a few times if it goes wrong. Also easy to remove and re-use for the following...
Cheaper alternative is when changingout old bar tape, just cut a few short sections and wrap short bits around pressure / resting point on your bars (where those gel inserts would sit eg, top corners, top of lower drops). Then just put your new bar tape on as normal and you'll have some extra padded areas underneath. Helps if the old stuff is gel tape too.
