That Lynskey is schweet. May end up too expensive though.
My MTB gets proper filthy but it gets cleaned straight after a ride and that's still going strong.
As Fizz says it's the salt that gets them.
Just one thing to add... clean and lube your chain after every ride and don't use dry or spray lube, just proper wet lube applied only to the rollers, get a chain gauge and replace the chain at .75% wear to keep the expensive bits from wearing prematurely.

Hi folks
Thought I'd post this in this thread for those of us who are road cyclists.
Seems like quite good idea...
A friend of a friend is trying to get this project up and running.

Yes, & its about time I checked mine, although I have cleaned and lubed it after all these wet rides.
But if you're like me, and change the chain regularly, then Wiggle have got 105 chains on special offer.
I bought 3, as they're such a good price

That's a good price Mav, shame I've got 11s Dura Ace and Campy.

Managed to purchase one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lezyne-Macro-Micro-Drive-2014-Front-Rear-Bike-Light-Set-Black-Silver-/331069986680?pt=UK_SportGoods_CyclAcces_RL&var=&hash=item4d154f1778
for the grand price of £35 posted - I also checked and it IS the 2014 unit which has a 'boost' to 350 lumens (at a rated 2 hours) - not bad for such a small and light unit.
I know the rear to be good - but the front looks impressive giving a good spread and lots of brightness (albeit in the house) but will be sure to let you all know how it goes on the road - Looks like a handy unit.

Road bike mud guards... I recently bought crud road racer mark 2 mud guards.
Theses Ones... http://www.crudproducts.com/roadracer-mk2/
And I'm not impressed. They were £35 and to be honest I just feel they are flimsy plastic. They're were a fiddle to fit and I'm generally not impressed with them. Can't get them to sit centred perfectly.
Has anyone else has experience of these?
I have had a crud mudguard on my MTB for yrs and I'm very impressed with it but the road racers just don't seem to cut it for me.

Mine ended up in the bin somewhere near finsbury park, hated them, beat feature on them is the rim brush, they are a pain to fit and they are sooo loose and they always rub. The elastic band design to hold them on is super cheap, only ones I've found that I like are the sks race blades I tried the standard they were ok but vibrated a lot I'm now favouring these http://www.sks-germany.com/?a=product&r=Radschützer&i=11014&RACEBLADE%20LONG%20BLACK
They have great coverage, they are removable and sturdy, they also have a cool fitment under the brakes that works on bikes with very little clearance
They won't work with marathon plus tires though as they hit the mount on the front fork below the caliper if you have less than 20mm clearance

Yes, they are a tad fragile and fiddley to fit. They aren't really meant to be a perfect fit, as the brushes that rub on the rim keep them in place.
They do stop a lot of muck for what they are, but are designed for bikes with close clearances.
If you have enough clearance, then get some proper SKS mudguards for this time of year

If you don't have enough clearance, then these are probably the only alternative to the Crud raceguards

Liking those long raceblades, but luckily my winter bike has stacks of clearance for proper SKS mudguards, as does my Planet X sportive.
But a great option, as those short Raceblades will only stop the muck going up your back, & not over the frame, front mech & brake caliper

If you can fit commuters do, if it's a temp option for a lightweight bike of race blade longs, purely for the ease of taking on and off if you don't like mudguards or the extra weight

Has anyone else has experience of these?
Yes
They are designed for bikes with little clearance and they do take a little time to fit the first time but after that once you have them adjusted they are OK.
I had one bike though that no matter what I did they just didnt fit right and rubbed. But I think that was down to the geometry of the frame.
They fit fine on my LOOK and dont rub and they do a great job of keeping the crap of.
There's a video on the crud site that has a fitting guide. The one tip I would say is dont do the zip tie up that wraps around the brake bolt really really tight. Do all the bolts up first and get them lined up and then just zip the tie up so that its finger ish tight. If you tighten it to much it distorts the shape of the guard and thats what makes them rub IMHO.

Never taking them off my Moda as they're great for riding whether damp or not ,and so light they barely make a difference.

Yes the SKS Receblade Long's in apchara's link, very easy to fit and sturdy too.... Well worth the money IMHO. Also if you ride in a group they are the best for reducing spray onto those behind. All other mudguards need crud flaps making and fitting to give the same protection to your riding buddies. My mate's club won't allow you to join club rides without these fitted.
I have SKS raceblade originals fitted and no one like to ride behind me in the wet. Suits me, I'm struggling to stay on the back right now! :(
Well didn't go for the Ribble in the end. Got a really good deal on a. Merida Scultura. Carbon frame and full carbon fork. 105 group with Aksium wheels. £1199.

IMHO the only thing you really need to upgrade will be the wheels. I've got some Askiums, good solid wheel, just a tad heavy & a noisy freehub. But perfectly good training & crappy weather wheels
Ultegra or RS81's make a nice upgrade, plus Mavic Ksyriums elites or Fulcrum 3's
I'm coming from MTB Mav, so anything is "light" to me. Gonna tool around on the Aksiums for a while and upgrade to the Ksyriums at some point. Also looking at the Planet X 45mm aero wheels. These are quite heavy though.

Yes, you'll be amazed at how quickly it accelerates compared to your MTB.
As for the Planet X wheels, yes very nice, but......
I had a pair of Shimano RS80 C50's (50mm deep rims), gorgeous looking wheels, but heavy. I wasn't fast enough to get them in their 'sweet' spot where the aero adavantage overtakes the weight penalty.
Plus if you're a lightweight like me, having a deep aero section front wheel can make it less manoeuvrable & liable to side winds, so much so a gust can catch you unawares.
I didn't use mine much, so I sold them. I'm thinking of getting some of the new RS81 C35's or Fulcrum Racing 3's. The C35's as the name implies have a 35mm rim.
The Racing 3's have a 30mm rear rim & a 24mm front, which I think is ideal, plus they only weigh just over 1500 grms.
I've got some Ultegra wheels & they are blooming lovely for the money, although I wouldn't mind some RS80 C24's or Dura Ace C24's.
But I've got a new build to fund, so they're out of the picture for the mo.
I'm not exactly a whippet (5"7' and 12st3lbs) so I don't think I'll be getting blown around too much. I also don't think that I will be fast enough for the aero benefit either. I think a nice set of low profile (24's) wheels like the Ksyrium Elites would suit me.
Good luck with your new build.

the show was better than a couple of years ago... there were some new bike exhibitors, canyon, stevens, vitus amongst others. Marin had a stand but no specialized. There wasn't any electric bike presence but a couple of things caught the eye. A shaft driven bike range from http://www.dynamicbicycles.com
Their folding bike was very well priced and looked ok. They had a road and touring versions. Lots of carbon floating around. Mizuno breath thermo demo was very impressive. Nice to chat to some smaller british companies. The stunt demo shows were entertaining. Not much to buy unless you fancied a new ££££ bike a few bits of clothing, food supplements. A fun day out and lots of free beer :) for future reference you could upgrade your mcn ticket to the bike/outdoor show for £10

Great product, easy to fit, I like the wide mudflap. I'm not so sure about the rear not extending all the way to the BB, which is why I have kept my original full length rear mudguard, as I know it stop a load of crud getting onto the front mech.

I crashed whilst commuting home tonight, a dog ran into the road hitting my front wheel/fork. I managed to stay on (just) but the wheel is well mashed up. The dogs owners were happy to offer to pay the repairs so I am taking it to the workshop to get it checked out tomorrow. I hope it's just a new wheel, but it sure is gonna be expensive! I also have a witness from the car behind me who fortunately was looking and managed to avoid running into the back of me as I bucked and weaved to a halt!
Should I call the police or just get it repaired?

Don't think they'll be interested, as no one was injured. But you could call 101 and ask someone.
Front wheel won't be expensive, but check the downtube hasn't bent or creased. I ran into the back of a car on my paper round. Didn't think much of it, as I couldn't see any damage.
But a while later I kept braking and finding brick wall type braking effect, ie I went over the handlebars each time i braked really hard.
Turned out the downtube had creased, and the front wheel was much closer to the downtube. So much so, that when I braked hard, the front wheel touched the front downtube, giving me the instant retardation!
Like this one! See how close the front wheel is.

The cheapest front wheel I can find online is £219,sadly it wasn't a cheap one! Mavic Ksyrium Elite if anybody knows a cheaper place please please let me know.
Bike is at my preferred LBS, not actually that local to me but I trust their work and my bike was a reasonable cost so it needs to be in good order. They are checking forks etc...
Has made me think maybe to sell this one and purchase two mid range bikes so I always have a spare, maybe a summer/winter pair. I could probably sell this and still buy two 'other' bikes.
And whilst I am here...... anybody got a road bike for sale?

Blimey, commuting on Ksyrium Elites.
If it were me, I'd buy a pair of Mavic Askiums for commuting on, perfectly good wheels, robust and not expensive. You'll get a pair for the price of one Elite.
Keep the Ksyrium Elites for sunny days.
Keep the bike you've got & buy a lower spec one to commute on, you probably won't get enough to buy 2 midrange bikes, depending on what you've got now?

Y'all wusses.
The last time I bashed a cycle helmet I tried fitting the parts back together but they wouldn't go, which was similar to what the surgeon said about my face.

Dont suppose the council would pay for the damage??[/QUOTE]
I doubt it, but that lane is riddled with pot holes, this one being small deep with sharp edges, hence the double blow out.
Don't know why or how I was riding on that side of the road, as I know about them. Just a lapse in concentration?

Any thoughts, opinions or hatred towards hybrids?
Im after spending around 500 gold coins on one. Dont really ever go off road, but dont particularly need a full on road bike. Mainly for tarmac'd cycle paths and general dicking about.
Been looking at trek, cannondale, specialized etc etc, but cant decide.
I really like the look of the cannondale quick 4, but 4 is my unlucky number - for no apparant reason, just dont like it. Its either 3 or 5 biscuits, pints, etc.
What would you buy?
Cheers :D
A few of my mates have/have had Boardman hybrids. I have to say that they are/were nice bikes. Easy to find - just look for larger Halfraud's shops.
Two mates have Giants - look good value for money to me. Giant own-brand wheels are reported to be good and help keep the price down or allow for better kit elsewhere on the bike.
Always had a bit of a soft spot for the Trek FX. Don't know why, though.
Don't get anything with suspension forks - at that price thy will be both heavy and poo.
gravel rash hip, sore back, bruised elbow.
Too stiff to walk
Ouchie!
Warm bath and a couple of slugs of single malt will make things seem better

Plus one for Boardman, one of my riding buddies has one for his winter bike and it goes well and looks great still after a couple of thousand miles over the winter.

I got a Boardman Comp MX recently and it's great....for 500 notes (minus discounts that come and go) you can get the Comp, the frame is great as are most of the components for that money
The only issue I have is with the bottom bracket and chainset...it's using SRAM's own power spline based components which aren't compatible with anything else so no decent replacement BB's are available that work with the existing chainset (which is good) ....I'll be looking for a new external BB and chainset (SRAM GXP Rival maybe) to replace what I have very soon...the BB is on it's way out big time already just from a daily 6 mile commute.

Get your self a Hope external BB, a it pricey to start with, but the bearings are replaceable, unlike Shimano & most of the other OEM BB's.

Unfortunately I got mine in Wiggles sale, for about £56
But I've bought others off Ebay.
Just make sure you get the correct width for your BB shell.
ie the width across the BB on the frame, face to face.
Most road frames are 68mm, but MTB's vary

Yeah it's 68mm, dovthey come with all the various spindle options? I still need to find out if mine is 113 or 118mm...

Knowing Hope they probably do, but I'd go to Hope's main site to make sure.
Managed to get out on the bike this morning. Its been well overdue last decent ride was before Christmas.
Out for 16 miles and just over and 1 hour. Not bad I thought.

The weather's finally improving, but no ride for me. :(
At least things seem to be improving after Thursday's fall.
Takes much longer when you're older :(
I have a Altura night vision evo jacket which is very good but getting to be a bit warm now.
Can anyone recommend a jersey type top that can be seen so either bright coloured or reflective that could fit the bill?

For this time of year, when its tricky to pick the right top I've got one of these

Removable arms if its too warm.
The Gore stuff is well made & fits well
Either this, or arm warmers and a bright coloured gillet.

Thanks for the help.
Bought a trek 7.3 fx today. Grand bike.
Had a quick blast today, an its very comfy and pretty fast. Test rode a Specialized but didnt ride as sweet.
Does anyone else have this issue - the first mile of a ride an im fooked, instantly run out of puff and nothin left in legs. But after a short rest im ok an can ride for miles. Am i just totally unfit?
