Not bent :-)
LBS checked both a new RD out of a box and a brand new Ultegra-equipped Giant. "They're all like that, Sir!"
Tried to flog me a pair of Mavic Ksyrium SLs...... Chain Reaction sell 'em for £639/pair. "We'll let you try a pair first!" :smt120

Tempt me satan not with your delicious wheels :D
Went to Lidl tonight to pick up some of their cheapy bike gear -only went on sale today, not much left already.
Managed to get a pair of gloves (only pair left that fitted) - 'gel' padding is a bit thick but reckon they will be ok for winter - think they might make my hands sweat/stink a bit though...
Also picked up a pair of glasses with 3 different sets of lenses - amber/light tint/dark tint (would much rather trash them than my Oakleys) and the last two pairs of socks in my size

Yep, their stuff goes really quickly, which shows it can't be rubbish, or better to trash this stuff than your expensive stuff like you say Matt

Wasn't going to use 'em - was going to put them in a display case above the mantlepiece :p
Think I'll look at Ksyrium Elites and Fulcum 3s and make a choice from there. In the spring, when I've been able to save a bit. and Mrs Jabba will have forgotten about the price....... "£430 for a pair of wheels - do you think I'm stupid?" Never, never, ever answer than in the affirmative :-(

As usual most of the stuff in my size had gone, or wasn't out. Socks and insoles weren't in my size, so I'll go back on Friday to see if they've restocked the bin
However I looked at the leggings and the seat pad looks ok, so I bought a pair @ £9.99 almost a Roubaix weight material. So not bad
Plus I bought a crash helmet for off roading at £9.99, and thats ok as well, its even got a little LED light at the rear!

Anyone going to watch the Tour of Britain next week? Class field, Hushovd, Cavendish, Renshaw, Thomas and Eisel to name a few. 3 of the stages are pretty close to here (1 is less than 10 miles away) so I'm going Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday :D:D

Got up at 0345 to get checked in for my flight to Lourdes at 0620, Stansteds a nightmare as the Ryan Air check in is for every flight not specific flights, so its a bun fight between yours and all the other folk. So even a 0500 theres a massive que to check in. Get that done and take the bike to the oversize baggage check in. Job done, then get through security, que wasn't too bad, then just wait for the departure gate to be announced. Its a busy old flight, most folk are pilgrims & preists :p. Uneventful flight to Lourdes, step off the plane to a nice warm day, brillant sunshine and with a great view of the mountains in the distance

LP collected me from the airport, which was a blessing, as there was no one available to collect me from the guest house.
We were staying 6km up the Tourmalet in Bareges, typical ski resort, with most of the ski shops being shut. But a supermarche up the street and the usual bars and bakers
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-IVZ6SRJGOEY/TnY3WmCCfnI/AAAAAAAAAhw/ghsLu-mzp44/s480/018.JPG
Its also has a thermal spa. Plenty of cyclists and bikers riding through on the way up and down.
So after a quick cuppa and a pain au choco for lunch, I'd assembled my bike in the scorching heat and LP, his brother and me went off for a little leg stretcher down in Luz and along to gorge road :)
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Kh0q6kqe1EA/TmzhET1eecI/AAAAAAAAAhw/_51KMwNdR9Q/s512/IMAG0056.jpg
Wow, the 6 km downhill into Luz was a real eyeopener, mentally fast for me as I live in the flatlands, great couple of hairpins before long straight descents
Riding through down the gorge and then onto a perfectly laid cycle track on a. Then some bright spark said lets turn back and do the Tourmalet. I'd only heard the 'lets turn back bit'.
So riding back along the gorge road, I was melting in the heat, before we got to the start of the climb, so were the others
The first part of the Tourmalet from Luz to Bareges is meant to be the hardest, with the steepest gradients, so combine this with 34 deg temps, I was in trouble half way and nearly went splat into a gutter. There was a stream nearby, so I filled a bottle with cold water and poured it over myself, LP decided to drink it, after I'd said not to :p No ill effects mind.
So we crawled back up the remainder of the climb to Bareges in the searing heat. Feck this is the first day I thought, what have I let myself in for as I was using my lowest gear to climb.
But after a shower, a snack and a cuppa tea I felt better.
Even better after the evening meal at the guest house.
Day one over, Garmin stats, no HR activity, as I couldn't find the chest strap

Day 2.
After a good nights sleep and a big breakfast me and LP headed out downhill again :p Just the 2 of us as his brother had fecked his ankle.
So at the suggestion of the lady propriortor we headed out to Chambasque, which was used for the 1989 TDF where Indurain won the stage and Fignon took back time on Lemond. Its better known as Cauterets, but it actually finishes at the ski lift at Chambasque.
So we rode down to Luz and found the road, once we'd got up the intital steep part, the road to Cauterets was lovely and we were both enjoying the ride. It was also cooler as we'd headed out before the sun got up too high.
The comment of the day was, 'it kicks up a bit after Cauterets' Bloomin right it did, a sharp turn onto the Chambasque road and then the gradient dramatically increased, but no signs to tell you how much. So after a good hour of climbing we reached the ski station
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-zakmAM6AG9k/TnY335p84SI/AAAAAAAAAhw/RHrJN7a-Zn0/s480/IMAG0052.jpg
I was relived to find that it went no higher than this, as LP said the road went further, but it was only suitable for MTB's.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1S0nSxODqac/TnY336imC4I/AAAAAAAAAhw/80yvLM-2anQ/s480/IMAG0050.jpg
On the ride down there were gradient signposting 10% :smt104
Then a brief ride to the Pont D'Espange where LP had to call me back from riding to Spain as I didn't have my passport :D
A nice caffe au laite and a crepe saw me right for the ride back down to Luz, where LP's brother picked us up as we didn't want another episode like the previous day, as it had got very hot again.
Job jobbed and felt much better after doing this ride, as at least I knew I could do the 10% climbs, we'd all been too tired and probably lacking fuel to do the ride the day before.
If you can access my Garmin stats, just look at my HR for the ride up to Chambasque! LP says I'm a freak for my age :D
Ignore the 220 reading as there was something in Bareges thataffected all the HR monitors

Completely lost my enthusiasm for it, what with the accident and the solicitors still not sorted it out, Personal Injury claim is just about there we think, but AXA wont even entertain talking to my solicitor about a value for the Van Nic, even the solicitor is getting exasperated with it and cant understand why they are being so difficult about it.
I would like it done and dusted so I can draw a line under it all. The police have prosecuted the driver and instead of fining him they have sent him on a two day driver improvement course. He was an old man and I felt a bit sorry for him, so hopefully it'll help him not do the same thing again.
I'm going to get some rides in on my own for a bit and then see about joining the local club in the spring I think.

Well Alpe D'Huez is on my 'To do' list. I know its do able in a long weekend as my neighbour did it, so long as the weather is ok, but I'd also like to do the Telegraph & Galibier, so another week would be required.
It does help to have these goals as a focus, although this trip wasn't fully finalised until July, and due to personal reasons I nearly had to pull out, luckily I didn't but the training I managed to fit in wasn't ideal for this type of holiday.
Next time I'll be a bit better prepared.
My mate has the same mojo problem, as after nearly 20 years of getting up early to compete in TT's he just can't be arsed anymore, so I've planted the seed in his mind to do a trip like this.

Well I'm sure that there would be enough of us to make this a possible trip next year, so lets set a slow burning fuse and see what happens.
I was lucky this year that my wife is off for the whole of September, so I've no issues with who's looking after the kids.
My only stipulation is that its not during the school holidays and I can't take any leave during the Olympics & Paraolympics next year (at the mo). But it'd be too hot & all the French will be on holiday at this time, so best avoided anyway.

As yet I have no fixed plans from my wife yet, although she also can't take any leave during the Olympics.
I will be encouraged to take leave before & after the Olympics, so I don't have too much to carry over into the next leave year.

Day 3 Bareges - Luz Ardiden - Luz
Once again the skys were clear and blue so the 3 of us decided that we'd ride to Luz Ardiden rather than do the 75 mile ride with the 'Doctor' & his son.
Down the hill again, with none of the tankslapper that started to manifest itself at 40mph the previous day, after I'd pumped my tyres up to their max pressure. I'd never had this before but it was damn scary :(
So through Luz and start the climb to Luz, great road few if any cars.
The middle bit of the climb is the hardest with gradients of 10%. I stopped by the side of the road to have a energy gel and to take a photo of LP, as I was ahead on the road.
As he went past he called me a sadistic assasin :p
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Co8c0KPYOM8/TnY3aKRR20I/AAAAAAAAAhw/2QhY-DchDCA/s480/028.JPG
Its a bit blurred as hes going so fast ;)
We'd all been passed by a 67 year old French guy
Once we'd got past this hard bit, then the switchbacks started, which although step gave a nice break, as there was a slight flat section each corner.
I could see LP up the road at each hairpin, but could never close the gap on him.
Once at the finish we were treated to fabulous views of the valley below and the road up to the ski station.

Yep, everyone agreed it was their favourite climb at the end of the week
Day 4 Bareges - Hautacam - Barages
Same weather as the previous day, so an early start. Luckily we didn't go out with the guided group as they ended up doing over 90 miles rather than the 75 planned.
So headed down the hill again :D always a good start to the day and rode down the gorge road at a brisk pace to the start of the Hautacam.
Now Hautacam doesn't start easy and doesn't get any easier, the inclines are long and there are few switchbacks, so its hard climbing all the way.
Well I say no hairpins, there was one I remember as it had a great view of the valley below, which I was admiring, untill I went round and was faced with a long climb. The sun was fully out by now and it was getting hot, so as I saw the climb ahead my head started to go. For me this was the hardest part right up to a cattle grid and if I remember correctly this was the steepest part.
But the summit was insight and the road wasn't quite so steep, plus I was following our guide, which helped my pace.
No Garmin data as it'd taken the day off.
Got to the top with good views again
Our guide says that during this years Etape they'd had to close the road up for competitors, because the ques at the finish were so large and the weather was so bad they were getting hypothermia
It wasn't a problem for us
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-eTB3goIyNCo/TnY3y7ulAmI/AAAAAAAAAb8/71r5oABQrE8/hautacam%2525202011%252520003.JPG

The downhill was a bit more tricky than Luz Ardiden, as you couldn't see through the bends, but still good.
We rode back to Luz, but we got picked up by the broom wagon, as 4 pairs of legs were completely fried. In hindsight we probably could have rode back up to Bareges, but at the time it was a different mater.

Which helped wash down a nice steak & chips, with garlic & herb butter.
We did try and go to the top of the Col d'Aubisque but when we got to the top of the Col du Solour which forms part of the climb to Aubisque it was in the clouds, so we turned back as driving was distinctly dodgy.

Yep mega trip
Day 6 - Bareges - Tourmalet loop.
well after the rest day I was nervous about this ride, for good reason. No downhill start or warm up but straight up the hill to the top and its not an easy start either. So a big breakfast of cornflakes & crossiants at out ready to go at 9. Well I started off with the idea of taking it easy, but a lorry up my **** in the one way system in the village put paid to that as I had to get a wriggle on to get out of his way. So huffed and puffed my way out of town until my HR settled down.
Long slog up the hill until we turned off the main Tourmalet road to the 'la Voie Laurent Fignon' which is the original & proper climb of the Tourmalet. The plus side is that the road is blocked by boulders to stop any cars going up or down, so nice and safe, the downside is that the sheep & cattle leave loads of stones & debris on the road, I wouldn't like to go down this way with all this stuff on the road.
The climb up wasn't too bad as it was nice and cool, but the last part of la Voie Laurent Fignon was steep before it re joined the main road. Stopped for a energy gel & a drink here, then proceeded up the last part, which in the last 3km really kicked up steep. Whats worse is that you can see how far up you've got to climb to get to the cafe at the summit :smt104
But its a good target to aim for as well
Well 1hr & 10mins is what it took me to climb from Bareges to the summit

So after a few snaps, we headed off down the other side of the Tourmalet through La Mongie ski resort and down past the forge where Bobet fixed his broken forks but was later disqualified. We were meant to stop there, but we'd all wizzed past before our guide could stop us.
The road down this side was pretty pants, lots of pot holes and bad bits, plus lots of cars who can't do the speed we were doing. At least a Swiss car allowed us past on a steep downhill section. Plus there was a massive poo in the middle of one bend where i had to change line to avoid it. Probably lama poo, yes lama poo, there's a herd of them on this side of the mountain roaming free :smt104 Didn't see any mind.
A nice rolling road to the coffee stop although pretty busy with traffic
A quick caffe au lait and back out on the road. Our guide Rob took us down a nice country lane which led to another climb of 4k to get back to Luz. Very similar to UK country lanes except therewere no cars.
This connected up with the lovely cycle path, and with a warm tail wind me and LP started to team time trial it to the lunch stop, until we dropped one of the group and Rob slowed us down. Good job as by the time we got to our rendevouz I was pretty hungry only to find no jambon only fromage at the cafe stop :(
So back up the Luz gorge road and the ascent of the bottom part of the Tormalet, no one bottled it and we all made it back to Bareges. LP won the stage as he dropped me on the climb.
Garmin had recovered from its hizzy fit and worked fine all day

62 miles doesn't sound much, but 5 hours ride time at an average HR of 159 is pretty tough
But another Hors catagorie climb done:cheers:

Rob our guide told us that the giant cyclist at the top of the Tourmalet is taken down every winter and then taken back in a special parade
In this years event where they reopened the original climb of the Tourmalet they got Miguel Indurain to turn up.

Long video, but goes to show how much cycling is part of the culture in France, which is how we found it, plenty of old and youing and male and female cyclists doing the climbs.

Just got our last ride to write up.
Day 7 Bareges - Gavarnie - Bareges
Yet another beautiful morning bright sunshine, although everyone had a bit of a lie in following the previous days exertions, well Lp's brother went back to bed :)
So me and LP decided to take an easy ride out to Gavarnie, as it had been recommended as a nice coffee ride, which was what we wanted.
So down the hill again, LP disapearing off in the distance, I clocked 46 mph after switching my Garmin on, LP hit nearly 50mph! Extra gravitational pull and aero rims accounted for the extra few mph ;)
Then out of Luz and out toward Gavarnie, nice reasonable gradient, but I was feeling the affects of the previous days ride and the whole weeks exertions, as I couldn't hold LP's wheel and he went off at his own pace, although I'd felt fine lower down the climb.
Still it wasn't bad and it wasn't too long before we got to Gavarnie, plenty of cyclists there, lots of lady cyclists too.

We decided to cycle up to find a better shot of the Cirque De Gavarnie and we're both glad we did. Here's the view from lower Gavarnie

But despite having one of LP's energy gels I was over hungry so we stopped in Luz for food & drink. Luckily LP's brother turned up as he was on his way to find us. I wasn't feeling to good, so I got a lift back to Bareges. LP carried on, but I'm glad I didn't as he had a really tough time on the climb back, and nearly called his brother to come and collect him too!!!!!!!

I felt sick most of the afternoon, so the Tourmalet ride had taken a lot out of me.
But after a bit of grub and cups of tea I was ok again
So thats it for my week as I flew back from a wet and horrible Lourdes to a warm and sunny Stansted.
Top week, top company and no punctures.
If you don't cycle it, then take your bikes as the roads are good and usually the weather is good. We hit the right week.
If not go skiing there, I'm tempted.
I can recommend the place we stayed, good food & accomodation and run by Rob & Rachel who were heplful and knowledgeable hosts.

Just intrigued to ask fella's, before you took on this challenge, what kind of mileage were you doing a week?
maviczap
21-09-11, 08:28 PM
Not that much, although I'd been riding all year. For me no more than about 100 miles per week average
I did change to riding up hills in the big ring and also sitting on the turbo in the biggest gear (53 x 12) peddaling slowly
My training was a bit curtailed due to personal circumstances.
Our guide Rob said if you could ride 60 miles you'd be alright. I'd say better off being able to ride 75 miles
Because I live in the flatlands I fitted a triple front 50, 39, 30 which was my saviour, although I might have been alright with a compact.
If you're used to bigger hills then you'll be fine

I've been doing regular spin classes on Tuesdays for an intense session, then a 30 mile hilly ride on Thursdays and my club run at the weekend. Probably around 200km a week. All my rides are hilly given where I live. As Richard said, if you can do a 60 hilly mile ride you would be OK, you will have to push yourself but you can do it.

Carbon Fibre Bike Repairs......
I gave my carbon fibre mountain bike (An 06/07 Giant XTC - hard tail) a clean the other day. I noticed that the lower rear stay on the chain side has taken a bit of grinding where chain suck has occurred over the years, and it has started to grind into the carbon fibre. From my limited knowledge of composites I know repairs can be effected. Given that the strength is still there (well it hasn't snapped and it is only ever used in anger, not as aroad or city bike).
So does anyone know of any companies that will do repairs to carbon fibre frames?

can't wait for LP's Ventoux pictures, that is the one I would love to attempt. Such an eerie looking mountain coupled with the history of it
Well we drove down from Carcassonne towards Ventoux last Monday and we got our first view of the mammoth somewhere near Montpellier, 100KM away! Got this photo from the car on the Autoroute.....
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/299327_10150303006748214_677353213_8046675_1120464 982_n.jpg
We were staying about an hour away from Ventoux, but the mountain was clearly visible from the windows of our hotel! We went for a leg stretcher up the Ardeche gorge to ease the cramp of all the travelling...
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/304071_10150305285473214_677353213_8056278_7028256 38_n.jpg

So off for a nice dinner before turning in for a bit of kip before Ventoux.
It took an hour to drive to Ventoux, with the mountain looming ever larger as we went. It looks huge from the base, as there are no other mountains around to lend scale...
http://a2.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/302308_10150305286373214_677353213_8056286_2415454 42_n.jpg
From here its 22km of riding and 1617m of up. [-o< The first 3-4km are a nice gentle 2-3% that warms you up nicely, before the road takes a sharp left and suddenly you are really climbing... 8%, 9% before a hard 3km of 10% before easing off to 8%, then 9, 10 etc... There is not a lot of respite on this climb, you just knuckle down and grind it out. The cafe at Chalet Reynard with 6km to go seems to give a false flat and the gradient eases for 1500m or so, before we turned a corner and the wind hit us in the face, great 20mph headwind just as the gradient hoofed up again! However after 500m the mountain shelters you from the wind and I soon passed the Tom Simpson memorial with the summit only 1500 away, so dug in and was cajoling myself up the climb (out loud it turns out! ) As I turned the last corner I was stunned to see the snowcapped Alps in clear view...
Stats : I took 2 hours 10 minutes for the climb, my average heart rate was 155 (86% of maxHR) and my maximum heart rate was 174 (97% of maxHR) and I used 2400 calories. Average speed was just over 10kph on the climb.

Luckypants
23-09-11, 03:47 PM
Yep Tim it is, the Gran Fondo frame is very forgiving, no road buzz but stiff for climbing. The steering is quick but not twitchy, she holds a line well and there are no wobbles even at 90+kph. The San Marco saddle is a little narrow, but plenty comfy for 6+ hours riding.
You can spec up any Ribble bike to your taste to order, totally bespoke. So bars, stem, seat post, saddle, wheels, groupset etc. is totally customisable.

LP, what ratio chainset are you running? Currently I'm running a normal double (not a compact) and find it interesting going up passes such as Wrynose/Hardknott or when doing the Nurburgring 24hr race up the final push to Hohe Acht.
I can manage it (just) but it's not a sensible set of gearing for big/steep climbs. What gearing to go for is probably going to be one of my harder choices, along with groupset manufacturer. Playing on the Ribble site is too much fun!!

25-09-11, 08:07 PM
Tim if you are struggling with hills, then try a compact on the front so that would be a
50 / 34 as opposed to your standard double which is either 53 / 39 or or 52 / 39
Then if you go for either a 12 / 25 on the back or 12 / 27 that should give you a decent spread of gears. I've been up a 25% climb on 34 x 27 and whilst it was hard it wasnt unrideable and I made it to the top without stopping or having ot get off and push.
The only thing I dont like about the 50 / 34 is that I find swap between the front chainrings alot. Where as on the 53 / 39 I run most of the time I find it gives a better spread of gears.
I keep the 53 / 39 for riding in my local area and I only use the 50 / 34 for sportives.

Agreed. I have a Campag compact which is 48 - 34
Although next time I go to the mountains I'd rather run a double than a triple, I'll be a bit better prepared hopefully rather than cramming training in

My chainset is a compact 50-34 at the front. I teamed this with a 25-11 on the rear and have ridden (almost) everything locally up to 27% gradient. I now think I could have ridden up the hard side of Bwlch-y-Groes (which has a nasty 25% at the start and maintains an 18% before kicking up to 20+% for last half mile) on it. On the advice of our guide in the Pyrenees I changed to a 27-11 cassette with the compact, mainly as it allows you to spin so much easier when climbing for 2 hours...
I hear lots of 'proper' cyclists claiming they run out of gears on a compact, which is BS IMO. With a 50x11 I'm spinning out at around 60kph (downhill! :D), that's plenty of gears for for anyone who is not a pro.

Mike, thanks for further gearing thoughts.Ohh one thing that make things a bit clearer.... my 25-11 and 27-11 cassettes are of the newer (2011) 10 speed Shimano groupset, the older nine speeds were 12t little cogs, so the extra cog was to give more top end without big jumps between gears. Just twigged that after reading Fizz's post again.

Mike, thanks for further gearing thoughts.
FWIW, I run a compact front (Shimano FC-R700 with 172.5mm cranks) with Ultegra 6700 rear-deraileur.
The RD will take the Ultegra 28-11 cassette with a standard cage. That's plenty of range. There's a bit of a gap in the cassette (e.g. 28 teeth to 24 teeth at the low end, but the higher gears are the same as the 25-11 cassette that I used to run (and still have ;-))
The ratios for the two cassettes are:
11,12,13,14,15,17,19,21,24,28
and
11,12,13,14,15,17,19,21,23,25
So, highest 8 gears are the same. For me (old and in occasional crappy health) the investment was worthwhile. Maybe one to think about come cassette/chain replacement time ;-)
With regards to groupset....... Ultegra Compact every time

Always the same when there's cycling stuff, which must say that it can't be that bad if the old boys are queing up to fight over a pair of arm warmers :D
I just off to see whats left, although I only want some leg & arm warmers
I'm looking to change my pedals from M540 Spds to something which is purely roadie as I'm more than comfortable with clipless now. Do I go for Shimano R540/105 or should I look at Look/Time attachments?

Not much to choose between the Shimano/Look/Time pedals
Depends how much float you like to have, which the Look pedals have 9% I think, but Time have float built into the front as well as the rear, so better for your knees.
I've got Look Delta's not Keo's, I've had Look since the first ones came out, so I can;t give an opinion on the others.
Just depends on your budget, you know Shimano will be fine quality wise, as will Look & Time

Amount of float with the Look pedal system depends on what colour cleat you use
Black = No Float
Grey = 3% Float
Red = 9%
I think.
I used to use look and switched to Time after getting some twinges in my knee. Much more comfy on the time pedals and they are easier to clip in and out of IMHO.
I cycle with a mate who uses Simano SPD-SL which is their road based pedal and he is happy on them. Comes down to what you like the look of and price...

As above really, any of the major pedal brands will be decent. I use Shimano Ultegra pedals which use the SPD-SL road cleats. With the yellow cleats you get 6 degrees of float (these come with a set of pedals normally) or red for no float. I use yellow cleats and am very happy with the system.

+1 on all counts.
I like the wide platform of the SPD-SL pedals. I have the PD670 pedals.

Well having bought my old sv back all cycling funds are out the window, will just have to b1tch on on the old Allez double.
Antone interested in Rad Am Ring this year? :

I've done it twice, once as a team of three (after an early injury to one team member) and once as a team of four. Thinking of going 24 hrs solo in 2012, it's steep up Hohe Acht!

Anyone fancy and absolute bargain........................................... ............ could be a bit fishy

Could just be a typo and forgot a nought or it might have been liberated from a shop by a none too clever chav in August
This is probably nearer the correct price?

Ha Ha I'd not noticed that. I was trying to think of what specialist bike shops were in the neighbourhood.
Not one of Ernesto's finest, but I'd have it for £700 :smt111

I know even less about Cycling than I do about motorbikes (hard to believe I know), but I'm going to get a bike under the Cyclesheme benefit package. www.cyclescheme.co.uk.
I never going to be a hardcore cyclist 3 maybe 4 hours on the road tops.
I've done some looking around in a handful of shops and within the budget I've got, it looks like an Orbea Aqua or a Specialized Allez. (the entry level models not the high spec models)
I just want something reasonable and something that helps me rather than makes it a fight.
What do you reckon about these two brands compared to each other, or is there a standout bike for the £600 mark I should look at?
Cheers all.

For your budget you can get 2 slightly better bikes from Wiggle. They do the cycle to work scheme as well
£629
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/gt-gtr-series-3-2011/
£419 similar spec to your 2 choices
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/gt-gtr-series-5-2011/
Raliegh with Tiagra 9 speed, which is a little bit better than Shimano Sora & Shimano 2300, which your 2 have for only £524!

I got out for the first time in ages on a mountain bike in Swinley forest last weekend and as it turns out my form is not as bad as I thought it would be. This has led me to want to buy my own Mountain bike and actually take up cycling once again (last time I used to road ride on my Trek Madone).
My question is about which bike, pretty simple really. I have given myself roughly an £800 budget and I'm looking for a hardtail mountain bike with suspension forks. The one that has caught my interest so far is this:

Specifically the expert version. Seems like a good bike for not very much money. Any one else got recommendations?
I already have Shimano Dura-Ace SPD-SL pedals from my road bike and a decent saddle is reusing those on a mountain bike an option? Ta.

Keep your fat tyred questions to the MTB thread ;)

I almost choked on my hot chocolate when you suggested using your Dura Ace pedals on an MTB, sacre bleu :silent:
No don't use them, sell them and get some proper MTB SPD's and shoes
As for £800 hard tail, then the Boardmans at Halfords always get good write ups, as do the Carrera Fury's
Still got the Trek?
