Off to the club turbo training session:cool: For sure worth doing if not a bit sore afterwards!First spin session for a fortnight tonight, after putting me back out. Average HR was 89% of MaxHR including warm up / cool down. Proper worker
Found this place last night while looking for a close ratio 7 speed cassette, like rocking horse poo in the uk but this lot stock 'em. Very good prices on components, German based but even with postage seems better value than Wiggle Reaction etc. with none of the gimmicky offers.

So I ventured out with the local club this morning.
They merged the beginers and inters group together, I started off at the back so I could work out what the ettiquette was and after a while was comfortable in the front 1/2 dozen or so pace wise. Particularly on the climbs which is pleasing.
42 miles covered in 2 hrs 41 minutes ( moving time )
Seemed a bit disorganised with no ride leader and a bit of confusion over route and turn offs and we lost one of the slower lads off the back of group and somebody went back for him, but then the group got split and didnt wait. I stayed with my mate so eventually ended up in the back group as he was going back and marshalling the slower riders around the route.
Think I'm going to try it again, I've got another two rides I can do before I join which I think I probably will. I need to get used to riding in a group though as at the moment I dont like it, I think its because its not predictable what people will do I just need to get a bit more comfortable with it.
I had a couple of guys come up my inside when I was turning around a left hand bend and pinch my space and if I hadnt shoulder checked over my left shoulder I dont think it would have ended well. Just trying to concentrate and hold my line, I've got enough bike fitness so I can keep up which I'm pleased about.

I've been offered a Scott Addict R4 of 08 vintage, with full Dura-Ace, FSA 50mm tub wheels, integrated seat tube and a weight of around 7kg for £1k. To be honest, I think its too much bike, too soon. Probably no good for the Sportives that I'm planning on doing either. More a race bike. Any thoughts?
maviczap
30-11-11, 09:23 PM
For a 3 year old bike I'd say it was a bit overpriced? Depends on the wheels.
Its always hard to put a used value on a bike.
Is it 9 speed Dura Ace? Very nice, but everything in Shimano right down to Tiagra will be 10 speed in 2012
Definitely more race orientated than Sportive, with those wheels.

On the other hand, you'll have something that you'll keep for a while and wont need to keep upgrading it. I dont believe theres such as thing as to much bike.
Seems reasonably priced, all I would do is switch the tubs out for Clinchers, you can always ebay the wheels if you dont want them. I'd only do this purely for being able to easily repair a flat whilst out on the road and I could never be bothered with the faff with tub glue / tape that comes with running tubs.
There wont be anything wrong with it, if its in your budget and after a test ride you like it then buy it.
Theres no reason at all that you couldnt do a sportive on it. IMHO
My LOOK will be going round some sportives next year, I'd wager thats more a race bike than the Scott is...

Fixie turned up (finally) yesterday. Wasn't expecting it to come with brakes...but it did.
Lovely ride, did about 20 miles on it and was interesting at first, but very fun. Struggled a bit (more than usual) on the hills, and knackered today but thoroughly enjoyable experience.

From the limited google - apparently they are based in Spain. Never used them though. But they look ok.....couple of google searches found that previously they were not very responsive - but that appears to be early 2010.
If it was me - I would say, not providing ID, get money back and order from somewhere in the UK. But thats only because I cdon't like giving out my ID.

Nursing gravel rash, a bruised thigh and very sore thumb after a pile up in the group on Saturday :( We were out on a gentle leg stretcher before our little Christmas drink and review of the year. We had elected to stay on the main roads due to the icy conditions. After only three miles one of the guys hit a patch of ice and went down, taking six of us with him. All of us were bruised and battered but Dave, the first man down, was taken to hospital and now has three screws holding his hip together :(

Well if one goes down near the front, then one or two others may go down as well. Saturday took 5 riders out of 8 down as we were all on the ice by then and had no way to brake or steer out of trouble. I was one rider behind the first bike to go down, so I knew I was going to fall, so managed to go down 'gracefully' but landed heavily as the bike literally flew from under me.
Ohhh and it ruined me tights ducky! :p
Not sure if this has been on here before, apologies if it has. Makes me glad I don't cycle in a city.

In Birmingham I think we are on the whole quite lucky - for the simple reason that we don't have the quantity of taxi drivers that London has.
My main issue is with bus drivers - constantly straddling the cycle lane - or overtaking you and immediately slamming brakes to pull into a bus stop.
You get a few idiots - but you will always get that.

Dave is out of hospital and should be healed in 12 weeks, back cycling in 6 if he wants to... he had confidence issue anyway, this may be the end for him. Shame he just bought a new Ribble! My brother is off to see him on Wednesday so I'll get the full story then.

My mate had a confidence issue too, which followed a nasty crash on a training ride too and then he had another spill in October, although he wasn't hurt, just a few little cuts & bruises, it won't have helped his confidence either. :(

I find the turbo mentally challenging to stay motivated, hence why I do spin classes. Plus I sweat so much I can only use one in the garage where it is cold and soulless. However if I could afford one of them super duper gizmo ones that simulate an actual ride, I'd have one. Pretending to ride up to Luz Ardiden again would be fun with pictures and everything....
Something like this....

Have any of you looked at those "Kinetic" Turbo trainers, that move and flex around, supposed to give a more realistic road like riding experience.
I looked at it, and looked at quite a few reviews but some werent so favourable. I think the complaint was that it was counter intuitive as it doesnt quite work like the natural feeling when riding on a road.
I have the standard Kinetic Road Machine which is an excellent bit of kit. I can still get out of the saddle and go for a sprint. I've got the pro flywheel on it too which adds a lot of resistance.

Bright, sunny & warm (for the time of year) here on the east coast and plenty of other peeps out on their bikes too, including one guy in shorts & short sleeved jersey!
Was a successful test of my newly put together winter bike, I called it a hack, but the frame is a Raleigh 7005 alloy frame, with carbon forks, plus all shimano stuff. Apart from not quite getting the replacement cleat position right on one shoe, the rest of the bike is spot on. Plus it's got full proper mudguards, which means I'm not afraid of any puddles.
Have any of you looked at those "Kinetic" Turbo trainers, that move and flex around, supposed to give a more realistic road like riding experience.
Haven't taken a close look but there's a review of turbos and rollers in the current Cycling Plus mag and a Kinetic with the wobbly gizmo was the best turbo.
Not cheap though.

After the ride with dipper (50 miles at 15mph) Tuesday, my legs were shot, I'm not too good on the climbs and there were a few and I really struggled.
Managed to convince myself to commute today and wow - still struggled with the inclines (but they are few and not very steep) as my legs didn't feel too good up them, but with the tailwind, and pushing hard I was sitting at 28 on my garmin and overtaking cars the whole way in.
Smashed my PB, averaging 22.3 (PB was 20.1).

Here's something to think about as a possibility
We've discussed having a Org rideout at somepoint, so here my suggestion, doesn't require a vote (we all know what happens there), because there's only one option
July 3rd 2012 - Ride from Calais - Bolonge see TDF stage & return to Calais.
By not taking the car and riding on the otherside it won't cost the earth, the coast road from Calais is quiet
No big miles, so no one has to be super fit, it'll just be a social ride.
All peeps will need to do is be at Dover at a reasonable time to catch the ferry.
I'm pretty sure I'll be going whatever, as this is the closest the TDf has been for a while (not counting London), but I've never ridden to see it before.

Yes it is. I use spin sessions as high intensity training and then do stamina work at weekends on club rides. I discovered whilst in the Pyrenees last summer that I can work much harder for longer than I thought I could. So I always work out at spin at 90%+ of HRmax as I was working in this range on the big climbs. Basically I taught myself to suffer in spin so I can suffer on the rides. This was proved last Sunday on the first ride back after a bit of a break, I was in the 90%+ zones for an hour of a 3.5 hour ride and at over 85% for all of it. I can now suffer, dig in and carry on after forcing myself to suffer in spin. :D

But I'd go and try some on first, don't buy online, as they all tend to be on the small size when it comes to sizing.

It was amazing, one of the nicest nights for cycling I've had in a long time.

Well when I my alarm went off at 815am, my phone said it was -5 outside. So I did the only sensible thing and did a 40 mile club ride:cool: Apart from being a tad cold, it was a nice day and sunny.
I really must get some overshoes though my feet were cold!

Ooooh, this sounds like an excellent idea, I'd been contemplating a trip to see the stage(s) close to the English Channel ferry ports this year. Do folks think the ferries might be rather busy with others having same idea??

Its never been too bad when I've been to Calais & Dunkerque before & as we won't be taking a cars it shouldn't be a big problem.
It only gets crazy when its over here

Cool, sounds like getting a ferry wouldn't be a problem then. I've just had a look and notice that Eurotunnel allow cyclists on the chunnel. £16 for a day return. Only downside is it can't be booked online and there are 'pick up' points either side of the tunnel which appear to limit travel times.

Anyone used this before and know how it works in practice?

No, and I don't know how you get on the ferry with your bike either.
I'm often in Dover and I know some people there, who work on the tunnel and in the ferry port,so I'll ask them.
Getting the Eurostar spoils the fun as it goes to Boulogne so not much of a ride, the idea was to catch the ferry to Calais and ride to Bolougne.
But we'll see what pans out

I think the Eurotunnel one is the one with the cars, coaches etc. Does that go to Bolougne? Always thought it was Calais? If it is Bolougne then yes, definitely spoils the fun of the ride and therefore ferry much better :D

Why do you need a new cassette?
LBS says it needs replacing as well as the chain, along with a whole list of stuff including wheels...
BB30 Bearings, headset (because it was put in dry), front deraileur (faulty).

Is your LBS trying to make a lot of money from you?
How long you had it?
Wheels, service the bearings & true them if buckled. Only replace them if the rims are worn out or beyond service
